No, it doesn't have to take up the canvas.
Remember to take your time with it, try the different tools ect.
If your planning to do something big, it can take hours to finish.

M, this is good,
A tip is to use smoothing, it makes your lines totally smooth, depending on how high it is,
But, so far, so good
