TLB: Polled Hereford Heifer

Postby _Alex_ » Wed Mar 23, 2016 3:15 pm

The first of who knows how many adopts to come from me during my temporary (for now) stint as an artist here at The Livestock Barn.

This little girl here is a simple Polled Hereford who has yet to have her first calf. As breeding is a large part of The Livestock Barn's future plans, this is a simple breeding related contest plus a naming contest. For a chance to win this girl, give her a unique registered name and answer this question: What breed of bull would you breed her to for her first calf? And why?. Reasoning can be anywhere from low birth weights to the bull being your favorite breed to liking the color combination. Go wild.

    Name: Bessy

    Gender: Heifer
    Age: 18 months

What breed of bull would you breed her to for her first calf? And why?:
I would breed her to an Angus bull, not just because i won one in a an adopt but because of the quality of meet that is made by this cross of breeds. I have grown up on and near cattle farms, most of the older farmers breed Angus and Hereford cattle to improve their stocks versatility to cope with Australia's hot climate and so that the cattle are able to climb the mountains for good grass. But, although Brahman don't have the softest meet, they are more nimble in the mountains of Australia and could help the stock survive longer. So, for my land, an Angus Brahman mix would most likely be the best option.

    congrats! Bessy is all yours!
I too would have breed her to an angus bull the first time. But more for the fact that they tend to throw low birthweight calves than their meat production. Anything after that, i personally would breed her to a Charolais, simply because they produce larger calves that tend to sell better on the market in my region.

and i would have had this up sooner but i've been stuck on mobile, sorry!
