king Sanderson dune himself made the mechanical dragons. when he was thirteen, the glowing clouds of life essence just roamed the deserts. nobody knew where they came from, they just knew they were annoying. since the prince was always wanting to make new things, he started finding ways to contain the balls of light. when Sanderson turned fourteen, he had discovered more than he expected about the lights. he was the one to discover that the lights were in-fact alive, and had life-spans. they died at what seemed to be around age forty or fifty. he made shapes of small dragons out of scrap metal and caught a few balls of light. when he turned fifteen, he had trapped twenty the balls of light in loose bits of metal. soon he showed his father, who showed the rest of the kingdom. when Sanderson turned sixteen, he had successfully made all roaming balls of light into cat sized mechanical dragons. the kingdom started keeping the dragons as pets, and when new balls of light popped up in the desert, they too were made into dragons. but with they're now physical forms, they could get into mischief besides flashing light in travelers eyes.
