The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen
"In the valley where roses grow wild, there we shall speak to the Christ-Child."
The version of the story linked above is not the original translation I read, but it is still beautiful and probably just as accurate, just with different phrasing. Anyways, "The Snow Queen" was an original fairy tale written by Andersen. It tells the story of Gerda, a young girl, and her trials and journey to rescue her best friend Kai, after he grows cold and mean due to having an evil shard of glass in his heart and eyes, slowing turning his heart to ice, and creating his sight to see all the ugly things as beautiful and beautiful things ugly. He becomes the "heir" ( or probably more accurately "friend" ) the the snow queen, a cold-hearted winter spirit of sorts.
The film "Frozen" is a cheesy rip off of this story.
In this pet depiction you see the snow queen dog - who is actually based off of "The Snow Queen" - and Gerda and Kai represented as birds in the rose garden.
