____ ref sheet

Postby SplashofOrangeJuice » Wed Mar 18, 2015 7:29 pm

    woo wow new species ♥
[not 100% accurate scaling, we'll say this is a baby ^]

they need a name; I'll take suggestions !
    suggestions;
    • pacacini (pronounced like pak-a-chin-knee; similar to peperoncini)
    • ...

    ABOUT THE SPECIES
    • Most notable feature are its membrane pouches
      • Similar to an inner pocket; can hold a number of items
      • Used as a safety precaution at times
      • Almost always in this configuration, but mutations can cause them to be located in other areas (cheek and chest always the same though)
      • Used as a form of expression and identification
      • Hard clear outer side, much like an exoskeleton, and can be shed if damaged to always appear as new. May be traces of scaring after a serious injury
      • Accessed through alternate system alongside the digestive system; accessed through the mouth, into a different controlled passageway of muscles to figure out what goes to which pouch.
      • Whole membrane is transparent, and looking through it one can see internal organs/bones
    • Has two horns on its head
      • Made out of same enamel the pouches are for strength
      • Can vary in size and shape
      • Very sensitive and able to identify temperature
    • No external ears
    • Four nostrils (two on each side)
    • zig-zag shaped mouth
    • 28 teeth, and slight split tongue
    • Two toxic barbs below the jaw on each side on the neck, as a form of defense against lethal bites to the neck. Barb guards are sold to owners as a safety precaution; although a slight nick isn't lethal to humans, contacting poison control is suggested
    • Big paws with sensitive paw pads
    • Average adult height is 3 ft at the shoulder
    • Scent glands on cheek, shoulder, and rear as a form of identification to others of its kind; they all emit a unique scent
    • Oddly shaped pupils that let them take in more of their surroundings, with five cones able to sense reds, blues, yellows, and ultraviolets, and they have the ability to hone in on the fifth infrared cone receptor
    • Fuel gland in cheek that connects to upper bicuspids, and is able to breathe fire this way
    • Has no tail [no tail bones], but occasionally more fluff
    • Longer fur towards back of species, with shorter fur on the front
    • Mane that runs along neck - mid-back
    • Usually large eyebrows and long lashes to protect from dust
    • Very social, usually living naturally in pods
    • They can live in almost any climate, and are often times companion animals
    • Very complex intelligence
    • Speech is chirps and squeaks, but mimicking human speech is common, and learning it doesn't take long after mimicry has begun
    • Omnivores, but their diet prefers meats

Let me know what you think!
This is a closed species by the way, meaning you can't make your own.

    Any questions or things unclear?
ASK ME ! It helps me develop them further !

- What do they sleep in? Caves, nests, etc?
- What are its predators?
- How likely would a human be to stumble across them?
- Are many of them in captivity? Would the average Pacacini live with an owner or outside?

Ah, thank you!! <3

[I'll try to answer all things related to coloration now that I'm thinking about it]
  • They can be any range of colors, from basic naturals to more vibrant, obvious colors.
  • There is no limit to the different colors present
  • Camouflage is not a huge concern for the species at present, as most natural predators are extinct
  • Naturals and vibrants can both be present on one coat, but in that case the vibrants are usually just an accent color
  • In the past, they were hunted for their fur and the unique coloration of it, but they have since been on the endangered species list and their numbers are improving

Again, I'll answer your questions and add more as I think of them <:
  • Pods sleep in sheltered nests, usually in caves, but within dense vegetation, large dens, or anything else that could be easily protected is common too
  • They are a nomadic species, and only stay in one place for an extended period of time if it's an undeniably beneficial area (good access to water, food, shelter, and safety)
  • They raise their young cohesively
  • No natural predators anymore, aside from big cats, large wolves, the occasional bear, and their own kind fighting between different pods (which is uncommon, since they are quite intelligent)
  • In the wild, humans periodically report seeing them, but usually during a migration period.
  • Pods will travel great distances to find better shelter, and sometimes that means crossing residential areas
  • Its estimated about 16% of the population is in captivity, from zoos, wild life parks/reservations, and typical citizen ownership/companionship
  • If they have a human companion, they live much like a dog might, either inside or outside
  • Specially formulated chow has been created and is sold in stores to benefit the diets of those with humans
  • Veterinary care is bettering its knowledge of the species, and when one dies, many humans will have decided to donate the bodies for learning purposes
  • Currently they've created a safe medication that can sterilize the toxins emitted from the barbs, but it isn't an evolutionary thing and the offspring would still produce the toxin unless also given the medicine. Its takes about 7 days to fully neutralize the toxin, and continued use of the medicine to keep it nontoxic
  • A surgical procedure may also be an option, but much like declawing a cat, there are health concerns (but only seem to appear as they get older)
  • Give live birth like mammals; usually 1-3 offspring per pregnancy; has the capability to reproduce 24 times, but for health reasons is limited to 6 as its the average statistic for in the wild as well
