The pack walked carefully across the plain. The tree line was more than a kilometre away, and that made the Cainids nervous. They could be easily seen if any people came around.
I walked next to Nitro, hands shoved in the stomach pocket of my sweater. The air was freezing cold and the snow was stinging any exposed skin. I pressed close to Nitro, seeking his body heat to warm me up. He turned his head and exhaled heavily through his mouth. A blast of hot air blew gently over my face and neck. It smelt like blood and meat, but at the moment, I couldn't care less.
Half way across the plain, Bloodstone froze, his blood red ears waving. The pack stopped as well. I tilted my head sideways so that my left ear was facing the sky. A soft whump, whump, whump sound filled the air. It got louder and louder. My heart nearly stopped. Oh, no.
A deafening whoosh cut the peaceful morning air as a huge, black hawk helicopter flew at the pack. My friends and I mounted our guardians so fast, it was as if we were moving in fast forward.
The pack took off at a sprint, trying to reach the trees before the helicopter got to us. Suddenly, a loud bang made most of the Cainids spook. A small . . . something flew past my head. A bullet. They were shooting at the Cainids.
"Bloodstone!" I yelled. "They're trying to kill the pack!"
Bloodstone gave a snort, telling me he'd heard. The pack was almost at the trees, when I heard a scream. I looked over my shoulder to see Nazca doing a flip and Kate flying off his golden back. She slammed into the ground and slid across the snow for a few feet. She struggled to regain her footing and then ran to Nazca, who was panicking. His left front paw was stuck under a tree root and he couldn't figure out which way to pull. The snow was screwing with his "mind sight". He couldn't build a proper picture in his mind of what the area looked like.
The helicopter was bearing down on the poor pup. Even from this distance, I could see his blind eyes widen.
"MOM!" he screamed. I looked up at the side of the helicopter. The gunman was loading his rifle again and taking aim at Nazca's eyes. His most vulnerable spot. The man cocked the rifle and got ready to kill the youngest member of the Cainid pack.
To be continued . . .
Scene from my story "2012: Rise of the Fear". The military has sent a gunman in a helicopter to track down and kill the alien pack. Sadly for Nazca, he gets his foot caught in a tree root and can't escape the hunter.
"Rise of the Fear", all characters, and story events all belong to me.
