What are Icthykeets?
These animals seem, at first glance, to be a hybrid of birds and fish. They usually are about the size of an average human hand, but can grow to be as large as a parrot. They have long, feather-like scales that cover their upper body, and a bird-like beak. Their gills are hidden beneath their long head scale-feathers. Icthykeets are omnivores, but their "beak" is specialized for cracking open small shell fish- which are their favorite meal. These guys love berries- although they hardly ever find any. However, an owner of an Icthykeet should be careful not too feed them to many berries, as in large quantities, the sugar found in fruits can be harmful to them, causing harmful weight gain and lethargy.
This Icthykeet was found caught in a fishing net, and rescued by us. We have rehabilitated him back to full health and he is ready to find his new, forever home!
