Nipper and Penny before the were mates.

I layed down to sleep on the cold ground, I watched Nipper sitting a ways away. He was looking up at the sky obviously admiring the stars. His breath condensed in to mist when he exhaled, for it was that cold. I couldn't help but admire him and think he was crazy at the same time. He saved my life, twice today and there he sits admiring the stars. But couriosity got the better of me, so I stood on my legs and padded over to him. "You are wondering?" He asked me, as a sat down next to him. "Yes, why? why are you admiring the stars? I mean you saved my life twice today, and there you looking at the stars green with envy!" I couldn't keep the despration of wondering out of my voice. "Miss, I've saved many lives, but some I couldn't save. They are sitting with the stars now and sometimes I am jealous that the stars see them but I do not." He whispered calmly. "Who?" I said as soon as the words came to my lips. His face became stony and I immaditly wished I hadn't said it. "My mother and father, and-" He broke off. I thought he would start to cry but he sighed and contiued. " Starr" the name had been ripped from him. I wanted to know who Starr was but I wasn't about to ask. "You must be wondering who Starr is." He whispered, "She was almost my mate, I loved her dearly but she unfortunately died." What he said was like a blow to the stomach, for some where in my heart I had started to love Nipper. "Do you still love her?" I asked carefully. "Yes Penny, I still love her. But I know she wouldn't want me to dwell in the past when oppertunitys crop up left and right.Well we should sleep." He said quietly. The creature in my chest purred at what he said, and I followed Nipper. I layed down again and this time Nipper layed too. I shivered in the cold and Nipper crawled over to me and put his paw over mine. He whispered to me, "It's alright, I am here." Upon those words I was warmed and settled down to sleep. The creature who had purred had settled down to sleep happily too.
