If I can make a suggestion that might make it easier. :3
When you color in the competition lines, there is a layer called "Male color" I believe. Go on that layer and then in the layer box there is a little place to check where it says 'lock alpha'.
If you check that, you'll be able to color on the color layers without going outside the lines because it was based nicely. :3
Same thing for the mane/tail layer as well.
