The top left image is the fur pattern/flow that would be on this (presumably grey or mexican) wolf.
The top right is the original.
Bottom left is the redline.
While you draw out the head of the animal, think about where the eyeball it self would sit in the lacrimal and orbital bones(eye socket) of the skull.
Also, the ears of any animal need a sturdy and (usually) broad attachment site to the muscles so the cartilage can comfortably move against the cranium and still be efficient. Just try to think of where the ear canal would be placed on the the head, I don't think too many animals have their ear canals on the very top of their head! Another reference to placing the ears is to curve the exterior of the ear to fit in a nice curve with the back of the mandible(also called your jaw).
Bottom middle is a small and quick tutorial on how I usually do my quick furs.
1. a base color(usually darker than the desired color)
2. add highlights
3. add shadows
4. repeat 2 &3 while making the brush smaller and smaller till satisfied
Bottom right is my application of all three into a single image.
I hope this helped!!
Also make sure to be sure what species of wolf you are drawing. There are MANY variations in different wolf species.
Here's my favorite reference for drawing different wolf species. link
