Journal Entry #246.

I noticed strange coughing and hacking noises in the late night recently. Sometimes if I look outside my bomb shelter I can see glowing eyes staring at me. Waiting. The creatures are large and shaped like canids, maybe hyenas? They have only three front toes that are similar to bird talons and three toes on their back legs that are retaining mammal-like qualities. Something also surrounds their existing ribcage after realizing these creatures are anything but thin. Perhaps some type of exoskeleton? Radioactivity seems to have corrupted some certain species and increasing the size of the medulla oblongata, making most animals volatile to violence. These creatures suspect for being a victim of said effects. With these things around, I don't know how much longer I can survive here.

Journal Entry #249

I came across a deceased monster while backpacking for food in the inner city. It had a loose collar around its neck like those wolf-hunting dogs wear. There was nothing to indicate whether it was male or female. Barbs on the heel of the hind leg is the same bright color as the eyes and mouth suggesting that it is related to the internal organs of the creature, possibly poisonous. As I inspected the creature more of them came and boldly approached me, similarly patterned creatures being far more aggressive and forward. Suspicion directs towards the possibility that they feel empathy and various other human emotions.

Journal Entry #250

As I write this last journal entry the creatures are charging at the shelter door. Whatever material surrounds their ribcage is stronger than common metals. The hacking and coughing noises are very loud and are sounding more and more like laughter. The action for causing this reaction is unknown.
I will call them Rekks. One; for the wretched noise they create. Two; I'm about to die and I don't have anything better I can think of.

Overview and History

REKKs were discovered by the deceased Dr. Bjornsten, one of the few remaining human specimens to survive the natural apocalypse. Barriers between continents were shattered and the man-made chemical plants destroyed and mutated thousands of surrounding biomes. Hyenas, birds, and wolves fused together to make a monstrosity in one of many 'species melts'. Radioactive material from beneath the Earth's crust sped up the process of evolution, new changes being made every other generation. An external rib cage was one result of the evolutions Rekks endured, all of the bones inside and outside a REKK became incredibly strong and nearly unbreakable.

They are intelligent creatures. As far as canid intelligence goes. Empathy and anger is apparent, the species staying in 'packs' and caring for the young like an animal pack of the past would have done. Although they have minor characteristics of today's animals that is all they share. Cannibalism is not rare to rival packs if food is rare. They have no gender. Every REKK can breed with any of their choosing as every creature is equipped with the same reproductive organs.

Size

These beasts are as large as a common stallion if not larger, a single front leg holding a hefty 20-30 pounds of muscle. They can weight over two hundred to three hundred pounds, resulting in a very slow but very powerful animal. Baby REKKs(called a cur) usually weigh twenty pounds at birth, death among birthing REKKs is not uncommon.

Collars

No one knows where these collars come from. They are not made by REKKs as they are not a fully intelligent creature with the mental capacity to do so. On rare occasions a sighting of a REKK with no collar or even two collars can be seen. It always matches the flesh connecting the cranium to the mandible. And that's kind of freaky so we stay out of any business regarding the collars. It's kind of a "don't question it just let it happen" ordeal.
