✿ ✿ ✿ yet another to add to the list. no, this is far more than i have ever managed. far worse, far more... unforgivable.

my eyes are hazed and my gut is twisting in wrenches of terror and pain. i glance quickly from side to side, desperately hoping a witness would take me. hoping someone has seen what i have done and is coming to take me away, to punish me. i want to cry out, but all that i can muster is an oddly guttural squeak. i feel sick and i glance down at the aftermath of my wrongdoings. the grass is littered with blood, the stench of unkempt wrath seeping from the red dots.

he shouldn't have gotten in my way. my mind assigns blame to my fallen object of retaliation as i whir about, ready to burst into tears.

i was merely taking a walk, when this suited man came forward out of nowhere and tried to take me. most likely one of those men who work for what humans call 'the pound'. i should have ran, not retaliated as i did, but i had felt like there was no other viable option. this man tried to ensnare me with some strange noose-like device attached to a long rod, tried to drag me away. i had to fight, had to do something. however, have i gone too far? yes, i have done the unforgivable.

i glance down at the man and yet again feel a searing wave of guilt.

what have i done?

the world around me spins, and i know all is normal, but i... i am in a haze. a haze of confusion, guilt and desperation. a light, cool breeze flows past me as if to assure me i have done nothing wrong, and just before i give into the false comfort i snarl at the notion. what i have done is unforgivable. reality separates from my imaginary world and i collapse in a heap, letting the world fade to black.

when i awake, bright noon sunlight sears my eyes and i let out a shrill squeak. the man is gone, the ground no longer splattered with red.

how long have i been unconscious?

i force myself to my feet, scanning the area. something isn't right. the trees and landmarks that surrounded the scene only last night are replaced by rows of tall fences, all enclosing me in a large square area. a small bed of flowers surrounded by ornamental stones lies in the corner farthest away from me, another corner holding a beautiful pond filled with exotic plant life. strange fish meander about in the pond, occasionally swimming up to the surface to examine the outside world. in my unconscious state i seem to have been transported somewhere else.

soon later two humans enter the fenced area through a narrow gate, whispering to one another while occasionally stopping to glance at me with a curious expression. i cannot quite pick up on what they are saying, although i hear mentions of a man, hospitals, pounds, and myself. i flick my ears back in irritation.

what on earth hare they discussing? what is going to happen to me? where is that man? questions flutter through my mind in rapid succession but i refuse to entertain them.

a sense of dread fills me. what are they going to do to me? surely they saw what i had done, and are discussing my fate this very moment. as if the two have read my mind, both begin to walk towards me. one extends a hand and runs her fingers through my mane, as if to comfort me. i want to shrink away from the touch when she speaks.

"hey. there's no need to be afraid. you're safe now." she whispers and glances at the other human, who nods in return.

her voice resonates through my mind. safe? how am i safe? i've just killed someone!

the man glances at me, raising an eyebrow as if to denote confusion. he then turns to the female and begins to speak in a hushed yet urgent voice.

"thank god that man is okay. pretty shaken up, but okay... he'll be in the hospital for a few days for a severe concussion." he said, letting out a sigh of relief.

my ears flick upwards, a look of confusion clouding my face. what... he is okay?

"we saw the whole thing, waited until just after to take you here to keep you safe. you're really lucky, creature." the man places a reassuring hand on my neck and nods to the female as he exits the fenced area.

a wave of relief rushes down my spine. he's okay!

minutes later i am led out of the fenced area out into the open. the people wave me away, and i look around. i recognize the area instantly... not far from where the scene took place. it seems to be a small neighborhood of humans. rows of homes lined up on opposite sides of a strange black line of pavement.

i follow the pavement, back to the original scene. there are still small bits of red interlaced within the grass, although all other traces of the event are long gone. i let out a sigh of relief, knowing that whatever happened is over. he is okay, and so am i. i drop to the ground and allow myself to relax, letting the crisp breeze comfort me. as i glance around, i notice a peculiar flower sprouted up nearby.

hm.

i gently uproot the flower and interlace it in the woven wreath of flowers around my neck. a memoir of the event. ✿ ✿ ✿
