THE LOST RIDERS - #83

Postby AirAngel » Sun Jun 01, 2014 12:17 pm

Unlike many adoptables, this species isn't a "quick adopt, get a whole bunch" kind. Each one is unique and special. Each has its own story, history, and future. You, as a potential owner, will not only adopt it, but actually own it.

Keep in mind--Tribesman and women wear armor or leather garments, not casual clothes like hoodies or jeans.
They also do not have very modern-like objects, like glasses, hats, etc.

This softly patterned green Bernikesaur is clever and very, very agile. Can you catch up to it for capture?

Is this the one for you? Are you up for its capture?

Extras and pretty forms are allowed and encouraged. Extras include pictures, stories, personality, ect.

For this Bernikesaur, you MUST have a rider, and you must train it at some point!

Pomona is a true sweetheart, as far as giant carnivorous reptiles go. She often acts like a snuggly puppy, oftentimes unaware that her immense weight is too much to cuddle in her rider's lap. If anything threatens her dear Alfonz, though, she can be quite the raging monster that she actually is, although anyone rarely sees this gentle giant in that state. Oddly, she also is rather playfull like a dog, and loves to fetch sticks (or sometimes entire trees) and bring them to her master.
Rider: Alfonso (Latin name meaning "noble")
Alfonso, known as Alfonz by friends, has almost the complete opposite personality as his mount. Alfonz is unruly, prideful, stubborn, and oftentimes immature. Although a young adult already, Alfonz is not very reliable or responsible, but he is a pretty big hot-shot to the young ladies. The only time you'll ever see his soft side is with his dino, Pomona. He treats her like a fragile baby bird, and is extremely protective of her. They both have a very deep connection to one another, and if all else in the world was destroyed, the pair would be happy as long as they still had each other.

Short story about your rider first seeing this dino:
Alfonz was snoring loudly from his shady nap underneath a small willow. He had just been wandering around, looking for an antelope or other creature for his family's dinner tonight. However, the warm sun trickling in through the trees left him under quite the drowsy spell and the soft moss under the willow seemed to be coaxing him to the ground. He inhaled loudly again, but woke in a fit of coughing after inhaling a fly from the swarm buzzing above his face in the humid afternoon air. Spluttering, the boy stood up, slightly disgusted by the bug and irritated by the sudden ending of his nap. Stretching his stiff back, he bent over with his hands on his knees. He froze a moment later. A softly spotted green snake, very well blended in with the forest floor, slithered on the ground in front of his eyes. He followed the larger end with his eyes, and the reptile just grew larger. There was no way a snake could be that big. Turning around slowly, the boy looked into the large slitted yellow eyes of a very large dinosaur, glinting at him from behind the willow tree. As soon as he saw it, the golden eye disappeared, and seemed to melt into the forest around it. Hardly daring to move, Alfonz glanced at the ground again, and the snake, which he assumed to be the dino's tail, was gone as well. After several minutes, Alfonz decided he was alone, and questioned whether or not he had really just seen a wild Bernikesaur. That is, until he saw the dead buck on the ground a short ways away, neck broken from a very large tooth. As he began heading home with the kill, bow slung unused over his shoulder, the boy decided that he would return here again to search for the mysterious dino. Although terrifying, Alfonz just could not get the connection he felt with that dinosaur out of his mind.

--Owner:
Immortalkitten, obviously!

--Name:
This bernikesaur's name would be Paludem, Latin for swamp.
Paludem is quick and clever, and combines those traits to defeat his enemies and avoid traps. Since he has never been trapped or abused by humans, he has absolutely no fear of them, and doesn't even bother attacking them. Other bernikesaurs are a different story. Paludem often feels that they are a threat, always trying to invade his territory. This makes him wary of others and attempts to keep them out of 'his' swamp.
He has a rather playful spirit and jokester personality, as far as that goes for a dinosaur. However, his dislike of other dinos makes him jealous and he doesn't like his rider associating with them. At all.

--Rider:
Her name is Itarius, a shortened version of the Latin word Subitarius, which means impromptu.
Itarius is a stubborn and headstrong 17-year-old girl, determined to catch and befriend a bernikesaur. Most people her age already had their mounts, but she is persistent even though people say she won't get one. The cause of her delay in finding a dino is probably because she is very impromptu and jumps into things without thinking. After three times of nearly being eaten by three separate future mounts, she still refuses to believe that she is doing things wrong. Itarius would rather figure things out for herself than learn about bernikesaurs and ask others for help. Despite always rushing into things, Itarius is kind-hearted and loyal to her tribe. She can often be found scouting the tribe's territory or looking for a bernikesaur. When she's not, she's helping the others out with various jobs.
When it comes to fighting, she prefers to use spears, and she keeps some stone knives with her for close combat.
Age: 17
Skin: She has medium-colored skin despite spending most of her time outdoors because she prefers sneaking through the forest in the shade.
Hair: Waist-length, medium brown hair. She claims it helps camouflage her.
Eyes: Silvery blue

--Tribe:
Itarius and Paludem are part of the Mat'iri tribe.

--Theme song:
Chasing the Sun - The Wanted

--Short story:

Itarius pushed her long hair back for the thousandth time and continued through the trees. She sloshed through the mud, waving bugs away. She had followed tracks through the wet ground and they had led her to a swamp. Ugh. Of all the places. Twenty minutes later, she plopped down and sighed. She had passed four or five traps on the way there. If the bernikesaur was in the swamp, it would have been caught in one of them. She slung her bag over her shoulder and headed back in the direction of her tribe. Finally, she would be out of this cursed swamp. The moment she took a step, she heard a splashing noise somewhere behind her. She turned around, peering through the fog. The noise sounded again, to her left. She turned in a circle, fear coursing through her. This was just like in the stories before they were taken by an evil spirit. Another splash, directly behind her and very close. She spun around and came face to face with a beautiful green bernikesaur, perfectly camouflaged with its surroundings. It looked at her with a curious expression. Itarius's fear was instantly replaced with excitement. If she caught this bernikesaur before her tribe did, she could prove her worth and be able to go hunting with her older brothers.

Paludem was wandering his swamp, looking for any intruders. He had seen a human wandering his territory, and, though unconcerned, had decided to check them out. He had circled them a few times, to see their reaction, then had approached. It appeared to be a friendly one. Others would attack, but this one didn't seem to be scared anymore. She was actually handing meat to him. Better be careful anyways. He growled and made a sudden jump. The human screamed and dropped the meat, running to a tree. That was fun. Paludem picked up the meat and wolfed it down, then paused to think about other ways to make her do something funny.

Itarius cowered by the tree, but the bernikesaur didn't come for her. It had only scared her away. This will be the one I'll catch! I can feel it! she thought. She took a rope out of her sack. Not like she was going to tie him up. No way. She would never do that. The rope was just to help her take him back to her tribe. Once she earned his trust, she could lead him back home. She walked warily towards the dino with her hand out and the rope over her shoulder. A few more feet... she stretched her hand out, but the dino quickly jumped to the side, almost making her lose her balance. She tried again, with the same result. Frustrated now, she ran towards him. He moved to the side again, sending her flying into the water. This continued for several minutes, before Itarius finally crossed her arms and sat down, soaking wet. The bernikesaur looked very amused. If she had actually bothered to ask what bernikesaurs were like, she probably wouldn't have tried chasing it around. Any other one might have eaten her.

Paludem actually was amused. Very amused. This was so funny. No matter what the human did, he was faster and just had to move out of her way and she went flying. He sloshed around, waiting for her to continue, but it seemed she had given up. He looked at her with an upset expression. She must have felt bad, because she stood up and held out her hand. No, you're supposed to come towards me. Paludem thought. Maybe she would get it if he showed her. He walked towards her, but she didn't move her hand. You still don't get it. You're supposed to come towards me, and I move. He thought. Why didn't she get it? He had already explained it. He began to get bored and decided to move on. He had only come to look at her, anyway. Had to make sure no one was infiltrating his swamp.

Itarius silently willed the dino to come closer. "Come on! I'm supposed to catch you, but I can't if you move every time I come towards you!" she exclaimed. Her tilted his head. I know this is the one for me! How do I get him? She watched him. Soon, he started wandering away. She quietly took a few steps after him, but he was gone. It was like he disappeared into the swamp. She sighed. Maybe everyone was right. No matter what she did, she couldn't seem to catch a bernikesaur. But she had to admit, that was the closest she had ever come. He had to be the perfect bernikesaur. As Itarius headed back to her tribe, she decided not to mention her meeting with... Paludem. That's what I'll name him. Paludem. Swamp. Perfect! she thought. She glanced behind her as she emerged from the bog and she swore she could see a flash of gold through the mist.

Ugh, hard decisions, hard decisions everywhere >n< Aughhh. But I can't postpone it any longer D: Both of you had excellent forms, honestly... I couldn't really expect any less, coming from you two xD However, I must go with...

Penultima!

Congrats, it was a ridiculously close match xD Eventually I just decided that I liked the personality a bit more. I thought that a cuddly dinosaur would be a very interesting character xD

Basic Training #1:

Alfonz walked swiftly through the forest. It was dark out, with just a hint of sunlight far off on the horizon. He was returning to the place he had seen the dinosaur before, in the desperate hope it would stay in the same area. This one was special, he was sure of it. Although dawn was not the most ideal time to look, he had to do it without his parent's notice. They wouldn't believe him, let alone let him go on his own. But Alfonz had to do this alone, a hunting party would scare such a timid creature away for good.
A branch cracked loudly behind the boy, causing him to jump out of his thoughts as the still forest rang with the sudden boom. Birds screeched furiously into the air, spinning and spiraling as they dispersed into the dark sky. Alfonz froze, searching for the cause of the commotion. Another crack resounded, and a small tree toppled onto the soft earth with a dull "thud" up ahead in the same clearing where he had first seen the dino. Heart leaping into his throat, Alfonz crept forward; only a Bernikesaur could have caused a tree to fall like that. Still blinded by the early twilight darkness, the boy walked forward slowly, feeling every step so as not to trip. A heavy branch slammed into his back, tossing him forward onto the mossy ground, an exposed branch cutting into his shoulder. Gasping, wind knocked out of him, Alfonz scrambled to his feet, bent over double trying to breathe and grasping his shoulder, which had started to bleed. Eyes, watering, his glanced up, and his blood ran cold.
A dinosaur, huge, green, and dappled in the first light of morning, stood over him, it's fangs mere yards away from his face, it's tail slowly waving back and forth. The beast leaned forward tentatively, eyeing the intruder closely. Stupid, Alfonz told himself in his panic. Walk right into a wild Bernikesaur's nest? Was he insane? Might as well have told the monster to eat him outright. He was going to die, he knew it. Alfonz wondered what his parents would think: would he be heroic, brave at trying to catch a dino on his own? Or just a foolish idiot, who's arrogance lead him to his death?
The dinosaur's teeth were now inches away, and it sucked in heavy breaths, sniffing the human closely. It's yellow eyes glittered, boring straight into Alfonz's very being. The boy wanted to close his eyes, to look away, but he stood transfixed, frozen to the ground. The beast leaned further forward, dipping it's head until the enormous emerald snout bumped up against his chest. Alfonz sucked in a labored breath, but the dino didn't flinch. Slowly, Alfonz raised a shaking hand, and touched the beast's head. It quivered, causing Alfonz to draw back at once, but it stayed put. Why won't it just eat me now and get it over with, Alfonz thought. The dinosaur backed away unexpectedly, looking back over it's shoulder. With a heavy snort, and surprising agility, it spun and crashed away through the forest, causing another small tree to fall over. As soon as it had come, it was gone, leaving only a faint rumbling in the distance.
Alfonz inhaled deeply, relief and wonder washing over him in waves. What had just happened? A voice called his name, as far off as the sun that was now peeking over the treetops.

Basic Training #2:

Alfonz grasped the leather saddle tightly in his bare arms, the scratch left on his shoulder now just a faint pink line. He still hadn't told his parents the truth about finding the dino; instead, he had lied and said he was out for an early morning hunt that day. That was over a month ago now.
Patrollers had reported sightings of an emerald dinosaur in the vicinity, and hunting parties were already on the search. Alfonso knew it was his dino, the one he saw before, and he was determined now to catch it before anyone else. Some of the other young men of the tribe were boasting about catching this dino as there own, usually in front of the girls, and it drove Aflonz insane. How could they be so thick-headed? This was his dino.
Alfonso trudged the same path for the third time, a little uncertain about the way since it had changed a bit since he was last here. At last, he arrived at the clearing, and set down the saddle and bridle. He straightened up and looked around. How long would he have to wait?
As if it could read his mind, a twig snapped off of a nearby tree from a large creature. Had it been waiting for him? Alfonz followed the emerald silhouette down to the head, and caught sight instantly of those golden eyes, staring at him. He pushed aside the fear that bubbled up once again. He was a man now, his 19th birthday was yesterday. He shouldn't be afraid of anything anymore.
The dinosaur tilted it's head to face him, not quite coming out into the noon sunlight. It blinked at him, as if in greeting. Or so he thought. Heaving a calming breath, Alfonz walked forward, carefully, but firmly, to let it know he wasn't afraid. He heald out a hand, and the beast nudged it with its snout, unafraid, and almost playfully. It blinked again. Alfonz scratched the scales above its nose, and it grunted happily, drooping its eyelids in content.
Alfonso was amazed such a dangerous creature could act so friendly and.... tame. He knew the tribesman's Bernikesaurs were trained, but he had never experienced such a calm wild one. He lifted the bridle off of the ground, and held it up to the dino. It sniffed it curiously, nudging it gently. Alfonz slipped the rope around the muzzle carefully, pausing every few seconds to be sure he wasn't upsetting the dino. It appeared calm all the while, still staring at him with such intensity that Alfonz could almost feel it searing his skin. He secured the bridle around the dinosaur's head, and stepped back to look it over. For all it cared, he may have just tied air on it's head. Alfonz picked up the saddle, and, as with the bridle, the dinosaur seemed not to mind or even notice a difference. The boy wondered if it had been tamed already.
Alfonso stood back to admire his handiwork, when voices echoed suddenly to the left. The dinosaur rose at once, and, bringing down another small tree with it's tail again, stormed off in the other direction, still bearing Alfonso's leather tack. Alfonz gaped, aghast. How would he explain the disappearance of the expensive saddle and bridle his parents had gifted him just yesterday?

Basic Training #3:

Alfonso stormed out of the hut, fuming. He hated being reprimanded by his mother and father, and after having to explain how he lost the saddle and bridle, and with a huge fat lie on top of that, he just had to get out. He broke into a sprint and ran to the secludedness of the woods, trying to ignore the feeling of cowardice creeping onto his shoulders. After several minutes he slowed, tiring. Out of habit, he had ended up in the clearing again, even though he didn't plan to. He stalked around the circular clearing, kicking the freshly fallen tree in anger. A sharp pain lanced up his leg, and he hopped on one foot, cursing under his breath. Everything was going so well, he even had his dino saddled, his dino, and now here he stood, alone, in trouble, and quite possibly with a broken foot. He tripped on a branch from the tree and fell, sprawled out on the mossy bank. He sighed heavily, not attempting to move or get up. Foot trobbing painfully, he rolled over and stared at the dappled light peering in between the leaves above.
How long Alfonso lay here, he wouldn't know. He watched the progression of the sun across the sky, running through thoughts and events from his life, both good and bad. He lingered on the memory of meeting the dinosaur, savoring both the fear and awe it struck in him, and the anger rose again from the unfairness of it all and how close he had come.
A sudden, shrill roar reverberated in the silent woods. Alfonz leaped to his feet, cursing at the pain residing in his foot. Limping, he galloped in the direction of the sound, teeth gritted. Dreading the worst, he followed the continuing roars, each angrier than the last, and realized he was awfully close to the Mat'onit border. He could see light from the open plateau ahead through the thinning trees, and movement caught his eye. As he drew closer, painfully as his foot spiked with every step, his fists clenched as he realized that his worst suspicions were true.
The wild dino, his dino, was thrashing and snarling, caught in a net of numerous ropes, further tangled by the bridle and saddle it still wore. It lashed angrily at its bonds, teeth bared, but only tangling itself further. In the distance, Alfonz saw a troop of Riders racing from the Mat'onit midlands, whooping and crying in triumph. "We caught one!" "Looks like a big beastie, too!" "Hurry up, now!"
Alfonz shook in panic. He had to save his dino. This crude capture was no way to catch a dino. He looked around wildly for a solution, and found a sharp rock in the boulders to the right. He dove for the stone, kicking himself mentally for not bringing a knife. He turned and hacked at the ropes, slowed by the squirming of the dinosaur. "Easy, easy there." He said, voice a little too strained to be calming. The Bernikesaur, however, eased a bit at his familiar voice, turning it's golden eyes at his sweating face at he cut away. The patrol troop was drawing closer, and Alfonso knew he had to work fast or they'd see him destroying their trap.
The last rope came free, and the dinosaur wriggled itself free at once. At that moment, however, the Mat'onit patrol rounded the last hill and made a beeline for the pair, surprised etched in the Rider's faces. Thinking quickly, Alfonso stood and dropped the rock, instead taking one of the bridle's ropes in his free hand to steady the dinosaur. There was no hiding or running at this point, and Alfonz knew the only way out of this was to convince the Mat'onit Riders that this was his own trained dino. He hoped with all his might that the dinosaur would cooperate, but he worried as it began to tremble at the approaching crowd.
"What do you think you are doing?" The lead Rider, a middle-aged man, called out from atop his mount. Several of the other Riders placed their hands on the hilts of swords or bows.
Alfonz swallowed, trying to sound confident. "My dino....P-Pomona," He invented on the fly, hoping it was a female. "-Got caught in this net. It was just an accident."
The leader narrowed his eyes. "What were you doing across our border, young man?"
The dino shifted its gaze warily from Rider to Rider, its yellow stare eyeing the weapons that were slowly being drawn.
Alfonso reached up and patted its snout. It remained unmoving, much to his relief. "She's new to training, and spooked at a bird. It won't happen again."
The patrol leader relaxed at the contact, but the others still had weapons drawn. "You make sure it doesn't. Why don't you be on your way now."
Alfonso nodded, but realized as the patrol waited that they expected him to mount the dino and leave under their supervision. He faltered a moment; there was no way this riled up dino would allow him to ride it for the first time under these circumstances. Cautiously, stalling, Alfonz turned to the dino and looked her straight in the eye. She stared back, and, miraculously, seemed to understand. She lowered herself to the ground, and Alfonz lightly stepped up first on her shoulder, then drew himself atop her withers into the saddle. Picking up the reins gingerly, he flashed a reassuring smile at the Riders, which probably turned out more like a nervous grimace. He lifted the right rein tentatively, and the dino needed no more instruction. She set off at a brisk pace back to her home woods, and soon the foreign Riders were out of sight behind the treeline.
Alfonso breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Then it occurred to him that he was riding, riding a wild dinosaur, with no training. She didn't seem to mind, or even notice his presence. He grinned, elated. Leaning down to pat his dino lightly on the shoulder, his whispered; "Thank you, Pomona."
Pomona snorted in response.

Advanced Training #1:

A butterfly, with small baby blue wings, fluttered lazily on an invisible stream of air. The delicate creature was blown violently off course from a strong, snuffling gust. Alfonz chuckled to himself as the poor butterfly was sucked dangerously close to Pomona's nose as she inhaled, then thrust away mercilessly by the gust of her following exhale. Alfonz was leaning against his dino's scaly flank, rising and lowering with the deep breaths taken by his sleeping companion.
Pomona and Alfonso were inseparable ever since the border accident 2 months ago. Although initially skittish around strangers, Pomona had gotten better about being near other dinos and humans, but was still more relaxed one-on-one. After saving her from the trap, it didn't take much to convince her to trust the boy, who she began to treat like her own hatchling. On the other hand, Alfonz was immensely protective of his steed as well. Before, Alfonz was overlooked, a mere boy in the tribe, but with his own mount and a Rider status, he gained a huge boost in popularity amongst both adults and peers. Respected by his elders for taming a dinosaur so quickly, admired by his friends for owning his own dino, and flirted with by the girls for his bravery, Alfonz soaked in all of the attention. Everything was just right. He closed his eyes in contentment and dozed along with his biggest prize of all: Pomona.

Advanced Training #2:

Pomona shied away from a thin, dead tree that waved back and forth in the gusty wind. Alfonz patted her reassuringly, steadying his mount. “Easy, girl, easy. Just another tree.” His dinosaur was on edge a lot lately, jumping at the slightest movement and sound. She eyed the pale tree suspiciously, huffing deeply as if she were staring down an enemy Bernikesaur. One of Alfonz’s friends laughed, and the boy thought his dinosaur must’ve looked ridiculous challenging a plant. Alfonz urged his steed forward, continuing with the patrol along the Mat’onit border. Pomona quivered slightly, and after several moments of thought, Alfonz realized why she was so upset: they were nearing the plateau in which Po had gotten caught in the crude net the first day he rode her. He hadn’t recognized the area at first from the border angle, instead of coming through the heart of the forest like before.
The soft whimpering of a large creature became audible soon, and many of the patrol Riders leaned forward on their mounts curiously. Was there an injured dino just ahead? Their question was soon answered as they descended the embankment; however, a crowd of other Riders was already surrounding the fallen beast. Pomona and Alfonz simultaneously burned with rage as they realized that the other patrol, from Mat’onit, was restraining a wild dinosaur, which was trapped in another net of ropes. The wild Bernikesaur, rusty red in color, breathed heavily, as if it had just put up and lost a struggling fight. A rope bridle was roughly tied around its mouth, and the Mat’onit Riders were tugging the other end, trying to coax the dinosaur to its feet.
Alfonso glanced at the other Mat’iri Riders, expecting to see his own disgust mirrored back in their faces. Instead, the others stared curiously at scene, as if watching a movie, or else looked away, as if watching was something impolite. Alfonz looked back at the cruel sight, and the Riders were now leading their catch away, back into the ravine of their homeland, the once noble beast hanging its head low in defeat. Pomona grunted at it, as if to say “Don’t give up yet.”
As they disappeared over the ridge, Alfonz jogged his steed up to the patrol leader. “Shouldn’t we do something about that? That was completely unethical, and cruel!”
“And what would you propose we do?” She replied, kneading her forehead with her palm wearily. “Without starting a war, that is. It’s not our place to meddle in the practices of other Tribes.”
Alfonz fumed, but said no more. He couldn’t argue with and elder tribesman. What he could do, however, was fix the problem himself. Although still angry, he contented himself with plans for tonight, despite his plan being against every rule he grew up knowing.
