Shade practice....

Postby AlaskanAlpaca » Tue Apr 01, 2014 5:40 am

Sphere #1 is supposed to be a bit rusty... Didn't work out so well. Comment/Critique? I'd love some feedback. :)

Edit: Tried again with spheres 3 and 4 (Well mostly 3). For the first "rusty" attempt, I used the 'crayon' texture. It turned out too smooth. I'm not too much more pleased with my second attempt at rust, which I did by using the pencil tool on 1, and full 100% on both scatter and spacing, and the pen tool on 2 with spacing and scattering the same. I just used a whole bunch of reddish colors. Whatcha think? :)

You have the concept down, but the rust looks too smooth. I found the best pic I could to show ho rust looks on a round sphere:
Image

Rust is like.... a covering of dust. Think of it as a texture and that it has it's rough, sketchy and dusty look. Think of each particle of dust as it comes out off of the sphere. It's like... a fungus. It grows on all over the sphere in patches. It's like... well just rust.

I haven't even figured out how to properly draw rust. It's very tricky.

Thanks for the tip! I agree, my rust does look too smooth. I wasn't sure how exactly to fix it, though. I also couldn't find any good reference pics... :)

Looks much better. Try not using so much rust in an even coat, but patch it up and you have your rust!

Looks really good. Seriously.
