Orphaned shortly after his birth deep in the forests of Farlow Island, Rhaegal was found by a member of the nearby naval base. Amused by the little creature (to them, of an unknown species), the soldier brought the cub back to the base, where he quickly became established as the unit's mascot. He went unnamed for nearly eleven years though, sometimes being called Dragon or Drake if 'hey you cub' didn't suffice-- it wasn't until the release of a novel a few of his more regular caretakers loved that he finally earned his name... and even that took a year to settle on; his various nicknames are in fact what others at the base often called him. Rhaegal himself finally silenced the debate, once he had a solid idea of where it all came from-- Rhaegal was... well, regal sounding after all, and to be named after both a great prince (even if fictional) and a dragon? What name could ever hope to be better?

Really, it wasn't until Rhaegal's 17th year that things really... changed. Around that time, his caretakers had learned more about what he was, and discovered something (at the time) rather unfortunate-- Rhaegal had, according to their research, a condition known as PPS-- he would never grow past his current size, and this even included his mind; the last bits of development for his brain to fully mature (so to speak) simply weren't going to happen. Not too long after that, news came around that the mascot program was to be discontinued... and though a sapient being, Rhaegal's condition made him ineligible for official enlistment, no matter how much he and his caretakers tried to appeal for it. They were able to set him up in a decent place on the mainland though, a few of his close friends even being able to pull some connections and get him a steady job at a well-off games store, hoping that Rhaegal would at least be able to make some friends and expand his interests there. Rhaegal took well to the work, but making friends... that was a bit trickier. He did eventually befriend a couple others-- Binary Helix (a ceiral) and Basil (a JBD), but that was about it. Worse still, he started to lose touch with those who'd raised him-- some were deployed elsewhere, some left, and some simply retired and grew old.
