Beyond Birthday

Postby exixst » Sun Feb 02, 2014 11:52 am

For those who don't know, this is Beyond Birthday, a character from Death Note. You won't find him in the anime or manga itself, but instead from novel Death Note: Another Note. I haven't even read it myself, but Beyond is already my favorite character. He's known as the worlds best criminal, contrary to his predecessor, L; aka the greatest detective in the world. Because who doesn't love an insane little killer?

You see that letter in the background? That simply colored, Old-English letter right there? That thing was the death of me. I thought the lips and hair of Beyond made me want to quit. Nope, it was that letter. Took me around forty-five minutes or so, give or take a few, just to get it to look like the reference. And it still isn't perfect.

I'm not a fan of how the face came out at all. I'm definitely going to go back in and clean it up eventually. I ended up just using my sketch as the lineart, which I soon learned wasn't smart at all. The hair looks messy, and not in the way it's supposed to. The lips and nose are gross. The mouth itself was an entire problem on its own, though I do really like how the bottom lip turned out. The shading isn't very good, either. Needless to say, I'm not the best at faces. It's a miracle the chin exists.

I didn't have a reference for the head, as I've seen enough of the Death Note anime to have a good general idea of what I was doing. He looks almost exactly like L.

Really, the biggest accomplishment with this was that letter, which wasn't even part of what I had first imagined. I was actually going to do Beyond restrained in a straitjacket all slouched against a wall, but that's obviously not how it turned out. I couldn't even get the arms in the right place, so I just decided to delete that sketch and do a headshot.

Comments and Critique are welcome and appreciated ^_^

I now love you.
I also envy your drawing skills.
I tried to draw *spoiler if you haven't finished DN* L's death.:http://www.chickensmoothie.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=1865898
As you can see, I failed.

Thanks :3
And you didn't fail! I'm impressed with the facial angle! It looks like he's looking down, and there's a lot of emotion in it!
Believe me, I cried too when that happened. I even watched the series again, and I still cried. *SPOILER* Insert hatred for Rem, Light, and Misa here. Throw Near in there too for being a replacement.
