Makoatl #89 - ADOPTED

Postby Cerestes » Sun Dec 22, 2013 1:57 pm

Cerestes wrote:
WHAT IS A MAKOATL?

A Makoatl is a terrestrial shark-dragon hybrid recently discovered
off the coast of the greenland sea. They have the powerful tail
and jaws of a shark, with the body and (occasional) horns of a dragon.
They usually have manes, and are covered in thick coats of fur-
adapted to keeping out the cold in their native habitat.
They live on a diet of mainly meat and fish, and are known to be vicious
hunters! Despite this attitude toward their prey, however, they
are very protective and mothering to their offspring,
as well as to each other the majority of the time.

what

well

this is a reserve

with the name either Jorden (earth in swedish) or Bahari (ocean in Swahili)

personality: calm and mellow; defensive

Name
"My name is Jorden."

His name is actually Bahari Jorden, pronounced buh-har-ee jor-den. Bahari means ocean in Swahili, and Jorden means Earth in Swedish. So, his name means "ocean earth."

He does not mind if you call him Bahari, or Jorden, but when introducing himself to others he calls himself Jorden. It is a force of habit, as he gave himself the name of Bahari once he moved away from his parents.

Thia (The-ia)
My name has no meaning, yet, it has meaning. It originates from nowhere, but in spiritual terms it is who I am.
Image
Mandarin Dragonet
I am titled by my spirit animal, the Mandarin fish, which is in the mighty family of Dragonets, named for the great rulers of China known as Mandarins.

Dudette, I'm a female dude.

My peronality is as varied as a rainbow or my fur and scales. Some call me a hippie. Some say eco-enthusiast. I say that I am myself.

Now let me explain something: If you look around the form, you may be a bit confused with my words. Yes, man, I do use words like "man", "dude", and "rad." I have a also used words like "gastropod" and "gammaridean amphipods." Now understand that just because my dialect is colored by words that many would deem uneccessary does not make me stupid. I would like to call myself an "ecologist", and, as such, I do study quite diligently the world around me, dude. I just have a radder way to say what I see.

I live in a half-submerged ship with my pet squid, Squidly. I carry with me a satchel made of a fishing net holding my underwater camera, a waterproof journal, and a pen. With these I explore the underwater and shore, documenting all that I can find.

I am an inquisitive and adventurous sort, man, unable to find an end to the wonders of the world. My colorful looks reflect my inner personality. I love to make friends with everyone I meet. My biggest fear is being disliked by others, yet, my greatest dream is to learn all I can about the world.

Many of my friends have called me the "Watcher", for I have been known to wander off and watch things for hours on end, taking pictures and writing every detail I can down. Many find this quite annoying, but I myself find it endearing. How many take the time to look at the world around them and ask "why"? Why do they do that? How do they do that? What happens if...?

It is believed that I am based on the Mandarinfish, also known as the Mandarin Goby, Green Mandarin, Striped Mandarinfish, Striped Dragonet, Green Dragonet, and - my personal favorite - Psychadelic Mandarinfish. When I heard this as a youngster, my curiousity made me look into it. Now for the basics: This fish, like me, is a reef lover. Sorry, dude, but those deep dark seas just ain't for me. Give me those sunny coastal waters with their mazes of living stone (coral.)
The Psychadelic Mandarinfish is a constant snacker by day. Believe me, man, I like my snacks, though, I'm not limited to day time. Ever heard of a midnight snack? Yeah, I invented that, dude.
What does Mr. Psychadelic snack on? Why, he likes Harpacticoida (ewww!), Plychaete Worms (man, why! You're not a bird, dude!), Gastropods (escargot...not so bad.), Gammaridean Amphipods (trippy, man...English please?), and fish eggs (finally! Caviar I can go for right now, with a bit of dip and...), and Ostracods (aliens!)
But, here, my friends, is the "pièce de résistance"! Out of all the vertabrates on this wide blue world: There are two, count them two, that have blue pigmentation due to cellular pigments.
-and one of those two rad fish is the great Psychadelic Mandarinfish!
That, right there, is just scratching at the shell, man. There is plenty more to find out, but no need to bore those not interested in all that. Just know that, through my researching and following of the Mandarinfish on the field, I have connected to them as my spirit animal.

(Note: I asked Talon about these details. She said I could choose.)
- must breathe dry air
- able to hold breath for up to 16 hours
- strong, agile swimmer and flexible due to shark portion of her
- possesses electroreceptors with a 2 feet range.
Electroreceptors are small clusters of electrically sensitive receptor cells positioned under the skin of her flews (lip/cheek area) that allow her to feel weak electronic fields found in all living animals.

Image - Her fishing net bag that she uses to carry items on land and sea. The fact that it is made of netting makes it easier to use in water due to the lack of water resistance.

You have heard the saying "That's just a big fish story", right, dude?" Well, take a seat, because I have one doozy of a fish tale for you.
It wasn't all too long ago, really, that I had begun my search of the world. I and Squidly had no homes yet, but I did have my camera, bag, and journal. I was set to find myself a place in the world. I travelled near the shores, avoiding the undersea valleys whose depths held the unknown and the land. I did swim along the land most of the time, but I rarely stepped upon it except to rest - for I was in search of a special home. I was looking for a place that wasn't fully on land, but not fully submerged either. For, you see, I am the kind of Mako that needs to breathe dry air. Although I can hold my breath for hours, I prefer to not drown in my sleep.
One night, I found myself a bit too far out to sea in search of food when a storm began to roll in. I watched it before looking back to where I knew land was. There was no point of heading back to land, for by the time I hit shallow water, the storm would be upon me and tossing the upper seas. Intead I dove down into the corals below, away from the turning waters, still on my hunt for food. Through the corals I swam, catching a few small fish as I weaved my way through the maze below. It had turned more into a waiting game than a a hunt as the waters darkened with the loss of the sun. The fish began to dart away into their homes, leaving the waters empty, save for me, the coral, and...a strange colorful object floating in the water. Slowly, I approached it - my tail lazily propelling me forward. I stopped at five feet away, just close enough for me to see through the darkness that it was a lone fish darting away. Having nothing else to do, I gave chase as my predator instinct bid me to. Away it swam, and I right after. The strokes of my tail were quick and strong as I sped through the sea. Around and over corals and through old broken drift wood long waterlogged to the sea floor, only the corroding iron bolts holding its planks together. My eyes remained focused on the bright yellow and blue fish. I began to near it, when suddenly...CRASH! The fish was gone, and I found myself stuck in the window of a ship. Wiggling, I worked my way through and began to explore. After some investigation, I concluded what had happened to this ship: Once a mighty vessel, it had hit an unseen outcropped of rocks, splitting its timber in half so that the back sank to the ocean floor. The top grounded mostly above water upon the stones. Popping out of the water and into the grounded front half of the ship, I took a look to the sky to see that the storm had passed. Dusk had set, and that land looked to be a mere quarter mile away. Had I found it? Had a fish led me to it? Yes. I had found my home thanks to the help of none other than a Mandarinfish. It took time to fix it up. I built a connecting hall between the front and back of the ship and patched up the holes. I may have still been looking, man, if not for the guidance of a little radical fish.

One day, not all that long ago, I had quite the encounter. I was on a strange shore, a bit out of my territory, exploring into the tree line that followed the river. I must admit that it is rare that I see other sentient beings like Makos out there. Usually on my trips I run into only normal animals. To find other Makos, it normally takes going into one of the social hubs of our society. You can guess my surprise as I was watching this fox, and it began to speak. My ears shot up, and, I have to say, I did run for the river. I may be a friendly person, but foxes aren't supposed to talk, you know! So into the river I went, watching the surface in case the fox had chosen to follow me. Not too long after, I did indeed see a shadow over the water. I swam there for a moment, watching the hardly moving showing before popping back up and spraying water at its face to try to scare it off. The fox stumbed back, landing on, not one, but two tails! Shaking her head, she exclaimed, "HEY!"
I sank back into the water, waiting for it to go away. Only my eyes and top of my mane showing above. The strange bieng walked over and stoof over me, its tails waving behind it.
"Hello," it said before sitting down on the shore once more. "Why are you hiding?"
It was talking to me! This strange non-Mako that could talk was talking to me! Slowly, I rose from the water until the tops of my shoulders were showing. "Hello? Um...why are you able to talk?"
"Why wouldn't I be able to talk? You're not the only talking species out there you know."
Slowly, I crawled out of the water and sat on the shore beside her. As I began to pull out my journal to write down this moment, I saw her doing the same and paused, looking up at her. "Is that a journal?"
"Why, yes, it is. Looks like you have one too."
"Y-yes...what's in yours?"
"The stories of my travels and the people I meet."
At this I popped up in attention, opening my journal filled with pictures for her. "I write down details on animals and things I see." I flipped through its pages. "I like to document the natural world, man."
She took it into her lap, pawing through before passing me her own journal. "I write about stories and people." Looking through it, I saw no photographs, but many pages of words and occassionally sketches of small things like pendants and eyes. Her own eyes continued to scan through my journal, periodically widening in what appeared to be wonder as she flipped through more pages. "These are amazing! Did you take them all yourself?"
I looked over to see what she was talking about. It seemed she was in wonder over my photographs. "Yep!" I held up my own camera, taking a picture of her. She flinched and covered her face a second too late. After that, she wouldn't let me take any more photos, saying how she wasn't pretty enough with her scars to be recorded by my art. We sat around and chatted - two explorers of different worlds. She asked about the different pictures I had taken underwater, and, man, it seemed like her face would light up with each explanation I gave her. When night began to roll in, I invited her to stay with me for the night, but she refused after hearing about where I lived. She explained that she was a creature of land and couldn't possibly swim out there. Especially without damaging her own journal. Before I had to bid her "aduei," she asked me for one favor as one adventurer to another, to leave a photo of my undersea world in the hollow of the tree. The tree we had sat by. She said that she would leave a sketch and a short story of one of her travels if she were to pass by again. We shook on the deal, and I left for home as she strode inland.
Now every so often I return to that spot to leave a few pictures for her. Almost every time I find a few folded pieces of paper. I plan soon to find me a waterproof box which contents stay dry. One day I can take home her stories instead of hiding them again in another tree.

he/she is so beautiful I can't help but tryout ouo
I might not be able to get art though considering I'll be on my Ipad a lot and won't be able to save and upload stuff on there :c But I'll try my hardest!

Name
Kiyal
Okay, so I was looking on baby naming website (I'm awful with names cx) and saw a name like 'kiayal' or something like that. So, of course, I misread the name. That's where the name 'Kiyal' came from. It's how I pronounced the orignial name a first and ended up liking it quite a lot.
Gender
Male
Personality
Kiyal is as spontaneous as his scales. He’s a big ‘people-person’ and likes to have a lot of friends around him constantly. He hates being alone—it being one of his biggest fears—and always needs to have someone beside him at all times.
He’s extremely childish, gullible and innocent (even if he’s seen the world in it’s full colors). He likes to believe everything that someone tells him and is extremely trusting to other. This trait has gotten him into a ton of trouble, but he has always gotten out of it.
Trouble seems to follow him around like a shadow. It’s always behind him and ready to strike. Most of the time it’s near-death experiences for him and his friends, but sometimes its something like ‘a strange creature has appeared, what do you do?’ On those times, his friends tend to handle that.
Kiyal is described as stupid. He is not stupid. He acts stupid a lot of the times because sometimes it can get him information that he wouldn’t be able to get normally. Kiyal hides his true nature behind a grinning mask and a cheerful laugh but inside, he’s an extremely intelligent mako.
Kiyal doesn’t like when any of his friends are hurt, especially like others. He can turn into a ‘demon’ and will avenge his friends even if it cost him his life. In fact, he’d gladly trade his life for his friends as long as they escape.
‘My nakama are my heart’ is what he often says. That, and the fact that he wants to be free. It’s his dream to go out into the ocean one day, looking for a place that he can live how he wants to live without people judging him or hurting his friends for it.
Kiyal was inspired by a mako when he was just a pup. They mako would tell him what it was like to be free, exploring the seas how he wanted to explore it. Kiyal begged the mako to take him on his next adventure, but he never did. Instead, he told Kiyal that if he wanted to see the seas, he would have to see them himself. With his own friends.
Kiyal promised that mako that he would, and that that’d meet each other at the end of the sea to prove that he did it. Kiyal likes to take pictures of fish on their journey because he wants to show off all that he’s seen when out exploring.
Someday, he knew that he’d go back to his hometown to show off his adventures to his brothers and friends.
But that’s a long, long time in the future.

Art (optional) wipp
Story
To the world, they were outcasts. They refused to follow the rules, refused to do what someone told them, refused to live in a cage. Kiyal didn’t mind that though. After a while, he was able to ignore the stare, the glares of mistrust, the open disgust.
He knew that they didn’t like him, but he never really understood why. Was he bothering them? Yes. But he hadn’t done anything to them physically. He had just lived his life how he wanted to live it.
That meant no rules.
Yet, these makos continued to glare at him. Continued to growl in his direction. He wasn’t as bad as they said he was. He hadn’t done anything to them.
He just wanted to be free.
Image

Being called a demon, being called a monster, that didn’t matter anymore. He ignored the shouts, the yells, and the cries of outrage almost happily.
And he smiled while doing it.
To the world, he was just a monster, a giant puzzle that they didn’t know how to break. They couldn’t fathom the reason while he’d smile while everyone hated him.
But not everyone hated him. He had friends. He had nakama.
They kept him smiling. They kept him laughing, singing, and doing the stuff that he loved to do.
Without them, he’d be a shell. He wouldn’t be able to handle the harsh words, the unspoken hatred. He’d be alone.
Being alone is worse that being hurt.
Kiyal shook his head, trying to rid himself of his thoughts. What good would the ‘what ifs’ do to him? Nothing. He had a mission to complete, and he wasn’t about to be in second place again.
With a thrust of his tail, Kiyal propelled forward, sharp eyes scanning the rocks in the reef. He wore his usual, happy grin on his face as he searched for the object that he was looking for, his camera gripped tightly in his paws. “Now, where was it?” He whispered to himself.
He had seen the object of his mission only a few short minutes ago, but had lost sight of it. It probably didn’t like his brightly colored scales very much, even if it had the same type.
There!
His keen eyes spotted it as it swam away into the darker parts of the sea. His grin widened and he darted after it with practiced ease. The Mandarin Fish stood no chance.
Finally, he had cornered it in a reef. He swished his tail back and forth almost threateningly, and put the camera to his face. The poor Mandarin Fish had no clue what he was doing, probably assuming that it was going to be his dinner.
One, two, three!
The camera snapped his picture while Kiyal grinned. Now, he had to get back to his friends before they got their first and he’d win! Last time, one of his older friends beat him to the meeting spot with a picture of a fish that he was based off of. Kiyal had gotten in second place.
But that all changed today.
He got first today.

Hobby
Kiyal love adventures weather they're dangerous or not. He and his nakama will go pretty much anywhere just to find something interesting. Most of the time, the things that they find aren't very friendly and, well, you can pretty much guess how that ends. Kiyal also wants to create a log book of all his adventures, so he likes to take picture and pick up souvenirs of places he's visited.
It was a promise to a friend a long, long time ago and he wants proof that he's been everywhere, that way he can face his friend again. He was only seven at the time, but he remembers the promise very clearly. Later, he met two slightly older makos who sort of took him under their wing considering that he didn't have a home. These makos grew up to be 'brothers', not by blood but by the bond that they share. He also promised them to watch as he proved to the world that he could do it. That he could do the impossible.
Of course, it wasn't easy, but that was part of the thrill. To Kiyal, the whole journey was just one giant, never ending, adventure. One that would hold many difficulties and hardships but in the end, it was worth it. To fulfill the promises that he made as a kid and prove that he was not weak.
