A Look on the Wild Side:Edlyn thought she was born in this shelter. It was where she was as far back as she could remember.
"There were more of us." she often said.
"But...I don't really remember enough to tell you anything about them, or if that was just a dream." That little girl was always full of smiles and laughter, but she didn't happen to be as active as her sibling was. She preferred to stay close to her mother, relaxing and listening to her brother's tales, all of which she knew weren't true, but she loved hearing them. Her brother was the creative and adventurous, and she...she preferred to keep it on the sidelines, out of harm's way, as her mother had said.
One evening, when the lights were off and the area was quiet, aside from the barkings in the distance (those dogs in the adoptable cages never seemed to keep quiet. Yeesh.), Edlyn's mother called her over. Her brother was already sitting, head tilted, staring at his mother in perplexed confusion. She lay beside him, and got quiet as her mother began to speak.
I love you both very much." Her eyes were soft and warm as she stared at her two beloved puppies.
"But tomorrow is when you must leave me, I have heard the big people talking about it." Edlyn looked to her brother, who had started whining.
"But..but why? I..we, don't wanna go!" Her mother's eyes were soft.
"I know, I know. But you two are getting too old to stay here with me. You both must go on to a new home, and live there, and be happy." She licked both of their heads affectionately, and wouldn't have any more of her brother's whining. "
"Now quiet down. I need to tell you an important story. Something you'll probably enjoy hearing before you go off on your own."According to her mother, it was just the beginning of autumn when she had been pregnant with four puppies.
"I was right!" Edlyn beamed, but when her mother shushed her and continued her story, her tail was wagging. She'd hidden under the house of many people, close to where they'd put their trash so she'd have a food supply while she was caring for them. How so many people could live in one house, she never knew. Usually only 4-5 people lived in those houses, but she swore she saw ten or more leaving every day! But anyway, she had her puppies with only minor complications, as was to be expected from a first time mother. She tried to give all her puppies the proper care they needed, and they did well, for the most part, until two of them started getting sick. She tried her best to care for them, and while giving them attention, her other two quickly growing pups had wriggled their way outside the safety of the building. That was where the human female found them. She'd heard the words and the cries of her puppies being lifted, and she rushed to their aid, but froze when the female looked at her. She held out her hand, and their mother sniffed it, and jumped a little upon being stroked on the head. It was...almost a nice feeling. She figured this woman could be trusted, because her eyes were soft and friendly and she handled her pups with delicate care. She climbed under the building and scooped up her other two pups, of which she looked at with concern, and placed all of them in a box.
"Don't worry momma. You're all gonna be alright." She didn't understand what the woman had said, but she took comfort in the way she said it, and willingly, but with a bit of apprehension, followed her to her car.
The woman then had taken them to the shelter, where she was separated from her puppies for a time. She herself was poked and prodded and fed delicious food to make up for it After all of that, she'd wondered if she'd ever see her beloved pups again. She was led to a big open cage where it was quiet and there were many toys to play with, which she liked, but after a while of waiting, her pups were returned. Two? Only two? There were more! Those other two pups never returned, and she tried her very hardest to take care of the ones she had now, never letting them stray too far from her.
"So..that's how we're here now?" Edlyn's brother's eyes were sparkling. He looked fascinated.
"Yes, my dear child. Humans are not as bad as I once thought. They are good to us. So going to a home with them will be good for you both." She smiled, giving them both another lick.
"Come get some rest now. You both have a big day tomorrow."Her Life From Here:
Edlyn sat in her cage, alone. She was moved into the big room, separated from her brother, where the others barked endlessly and made her ears ring. They weren't even saying anything important to her, so she didn't even pay attention, really. The lost pup sat in the corner of her cage and watched as the humans passed by. Her ears were pricked with mild curiosity. She had to remember what her mother said, about the humans being good to them. She caught bits and pieces of their conversations, but she didn't understand what they were saying.
"That pup is cute but..she's not playing! Is she sick? I don't want a sick puppy."
"She's a bit too fluffy for our house. She'd shed everywhere, you know."
"She's so tiny! Our other dog would step on her!"Everyone found flaws with her. But not her brother. Her brother was snatched up at the flick of an ear. Sighing, she rested her head on her dainty little paws and watched as the place slowly emptied, the sun beginning to set. Just when the shelter was about to close, a boy walked in. He was a timid looking thing, with long ginger hair, a freckled nose and bright blue eyes.
"I'm...looking for a dog." he'd said. His voice was soft and sweet, and instantly caught Edlyn's attention. Her head rose and her nose twitched with curiosity as the boy browsed the cages. No dog seemed to catch his eye. Until he stopped at Edlyn's cage. He read over her information, hung to the wire, then kneeled and called her name.
C'mere, Edlyn. You're a pretty girl, aren't you?" Tail wagging, Edlyn rose up and timidly padded to the wire, sniffing the hand held out to her. He smelled..gentle and friendly. Eventually a man came and opened her cage, gently lifting her. She squirmed and squeaked, then blinked as she was set in the boy's arms, looking up at him with wide eyes. His arms were warm and comfortable, his touch gentle as he stroked her head and ears, and he smelled vaguely of the outdoors. He carried her to a cushioned seat and set her on it, tying a small pink ribbon to one of her paws. Her tail began softly wagging as she held her leg up daintily for him. He smiled down at her, gently stroking her fur back.
"My name is Alexander, Edlyn, and you're going to come home with me.
Would you like that?"A blue collar was placed around her neck, and attatched to it was a leash. Not used to wearing these things, she struggled like any puppy would, but at the calming words of her new master..his name was..Alexander..right? At the calming words of Alexander, she relaxed and accepted it. Papers were shuffled and signed, words were passed between the big people and Alexander, and eventually she was lead from the building. The outside air was cool and crisp, a light breeze ran through her think fluffy coat. They walked slowly in silence, Alexander being very patient as Edlyn wanted to sniff every single bush and blade of grass. After about an hour of walking (she was beginning to think they were going in a circle. They passed that lilac bush three times.) they arrived at the small yellow house with the brick stairs. She looked curiously up at Alexander, who smiled at her.
"This is your new home, girl. Do you like it?" He led her up the stairs to the front door and opened it up for her, releasing her leash and collar. She hesitantly entered the house, sniffing here and there to get a feel for the area. It smelled clean, like flowers and happy smiles. Alexander brought in two big people, who called her over and pet her and told her what a good girl she was. Her tail wagged as gentle hands ran over her back. There were puppy toys all around, and a small bed near their fireplace. She nosed a sweet smelling bone around and laid with it, chewing the corner as she listened to the big people talk.
From what she heard from the big people, Alexander was lonely and needed a friend because he was an only child, whatever that meant. They couldn't have any more children, so they had Alexander find a new friend at the local shelter, and that was Edlyn.
Eventually, he led her to the room that smelled like laundry detergent and clean things and showed her to her new bed. It was soft and cushy, and there was food and water in a bowl nearby.
"This is where you'll sleep at night." he told her softly, turning on a small blue night light. Edlyn settled herself in the bed and closed her eyes, worn out from such a long day.
"Goodnight, Edlyn. See you in the morning." He smiled and turned off the light, closing the door softly.
Personality:Edlyn is a shy, timid girl, but she's a bundle of love and affection once you get to know her. She's quite the calm one, preferring to relax by a warm fire or in a lap than romp around, except on occasion. She is a puppy, after all. She does have some trust issues, of which nobody knows how they developed, and it takes her a while to warm up to anyone that isn't her main caretaker.

About the Applier:My name is Ace of Hearts. I've applied today because this beautiful girl has caught my eye. Her personality is just darling and as I've written her backstory, I've fallen for her. I'd be sure to take care of her as if she were my own little puppy, and spoil her rotten above my other characters.
Unfortunately, due to school I haven't had time to make as much art as I would've liked, so I hope everything else makes up for the lack of it.
