Page Twenty-Five:
[[PERSPECTIVE: Ellie]]
"Oh," Louie blinks, "What are you doing here Sam?"
"Ah, well..." Sam seems to pause, as though he's trying to come up with an excuse. "Truthfully, I was ganna ask Ellie a few things." he turns to me and I cut my eyes to the ground, not looking for eye contact.
Okay, I think, so if I don't talk to him through thought-mail, he'll just hunt me down in person? That's really lame, is he that desperate?
"Earth to Ellie." Sam waves his hand in front of my eyes. I swat it away and shove my hands in my pockets. its then I realize I'm not wearing what I had been last wearing. I glance down to see a purple running jacket with extra long sleeves. its got a half zipper, the zipper flashing silver with a little emblem on it. I finger it and try to depict the image, though it only looks like random squiggles and symbols.
"I thought it was a cool picture." Sam echoes my thoughts and I look up at him for a moment, then dart my sight to Louie, offering her a desperate look. she just shrugs. "Did you hear me though?" Sam presses on.
With a sigh, I dismiss him with a wave, "Yea, I heard you. but I got plenty questions too, so get in line." I snap, surprised at what a grouchy mood I'm in. though I suppose its acceptable, considering the circumstances.
Sam groans and props his hands behind his head and stretches, then he leaves them there. "Alright, can I ask how are you then?"
"Fine I guess. very confused and I was sort of in the middle of something." I wave my hands between Louie and myself.
"No, its alright. I've shown you the main things, you can go off with Sam." Louie says, then turns on her heels to leave. I open my mouth to call out for her to wait and say that I don't really want to be with Sam at the moment, but I slam it shut because I know it would be uncalled for.
"Great!" Sam claps his hands together then rubs them with enthusiasm, "Now that I got you away from the grouch, we can talk."
"Great..." I mutter sarcastically.
"Ahh, so I have loads of questions for you. like what the districts are like. are they still separated into social classes? when did they start graphing people with animal parts?" Sam asks without a breath.
"Least that was only two. no, we don't have social classes or rankings or whatever; we just have age group settings. like the Elders go to the elder estates, the Kiddies go to the kid areas, and I guess the teens are where I am. and they have been graphing people with animal parts since two years ago." I recall when this was a fad and had just came out. it costs a fortune to get even a pair of ears put on, but there were so many people with cat-like features. another common sight to see were dogs, bird--like with wings-- and unnaturally long and poufy tails.
"Okay, okay, I got some more-" he begins again with the same thrilled edge to his voice.
"No, I don't want to play twenty questions right now. I kind of just want to watch this..." I trail off, staring at the fight blossoming between two individuals on the fighting plot. but Sam ignores me and continues to spew questions. I zone out of our conversation and buckle down on the verbal insults and forms of mockery that catches my attention between the two on the plot.
[[PERSPECTIVE CHANGE: now you are in the point of view of the archer, his name will be revealed shortly]]
Ahh, always bickering I see... I think, crouching in a tree watching Muna and Trent squabble. I caught their whole conversation due to my excellent hearing I gained in the district before I left. Gatta acquire what you need before you make a run for it, eh? Either way, their dispute was over who had struck the other unfairly. I already see a few scarlet marks of blood dash Muna's cheeks and bruises dot Trent's. I chuckle to myself, remembering just how simple minded normal people who had ever lived in the districts; with an acceptation of myself.
though I had been born in the districts, and lived there eight years of my life, I meet someone who believed in rebellion and wanted to leave, break free of the government and bring them to their knees before the people. I was instantly attragcted to her in that hero-leader like way, I felt like if I got close to her I could use it to my advantage to also break free. and it had worked, we broke out of the district and slowly drew more and more with us. we set up camps and a main center; all outside district property-- any area out of the districts is called the Lynn. The government says it was named after our founder, the districts founder I mean, but I know better. I know the real reason why. I haven't shared it with anyone beside whom I left with all those years ago... ten years I have lived in the Lynn with her, building on our civilization, soon to reunite and bring down the government.
My mind flicks away from the subject and back on my training; or rather the others training. I draw an arrow from my quiver and set in in place with my bow-string. Drawing it back to my ear steadily and easily, I smile to myself and allow a rare vocal moment; "Check mate..." I whisper, my own voice odd to fill my ears and chest with a low vibration. I release the arrow right as the words slip from my slivered mouth. the world slows before me, and I watch the arrow sprint for its victim.
With not one twirl or off-set of the arrow, it cuts sharply through the air and connects with Muna's shoulder. she lets out a weak wail, then her face falls blank, holding no life. my smile deepens.
