Page Twenty-Three:
The man shrugs, "Dunno..." he pauses to shove his hands in his large pockets, then he sakes his head, sending his locks of dusty hair in front of his eyes. It's then I realize that he had a short braid trailing from his neck. He continues, "That's what HE said, but-"
I don't have time for this, I think; then cut him off, "What are you talking about? And just who do you think you are watching me while I sleep like that~!?" I spew; on the verge of a mental snap, as my mother called them before she had to move to the next government district due to cut-back on supplies. A fist grips my heart at the memory of her. I hadn't seen her since my last visit to her and my father since last year; the annual trip I take out to see them. Blinking away the fog that still covers my eyes and a few prickling tears, I hold a determined face waiting for my answer.
A voice sounds behind me, seemingly coming from nowhere since I hadn't heard anyone come up, "His name's Misc."
I swerve around to face the irritated voice, coming to a girl whose a good three inches taller than me. I swallow hard while she goes on with an even voice, and has dropped the annoyed tone, "I'm Louie; your name's Ellie I hear? And your different...?" She asks, looking me up and down, but not waiting for an answer, "Please calm down Ellie, maybe take a seat." its more of a demand rather than a request. I don't sit.
Instead, I look at her with a pointed expression, "Who put the crown on YOUR head?" I ask, sarcasm and irritation dripping from my voice.
I hear Misc let out a noise cross between a whine and a groan, "Elli, shut up..." he seems to plead.
But Louie interjects, "Misc, she doesn't know." Louie stops and looks around the camp with an expression I cant read; her gaze cuts between Misc and myself, "How come y'all two are the only ones awake? Misc, go wake the others, will ya?" she jerks her hear around and Misc turns to go wake the others.
Great, I think, how many more are there?
Morning, I saw you met Louie and Misc, yes? How do they say, 'better more luck than a pound of silver'? Ah, I was never good with district sayings... Sam's voice rings through my thought-mail; and for the first time I pick up the accent hanging with his words, though I don't recognize it. And his voice is the last thing I need in my head right now - bouncing around with all the other things I have to process.
