but your heart is ablaze and it's killing you
something isn't right because her heartbeat flutters like a spitting flame, one that someone just doused with icy alcohol in the attempts to bring it to life, but their hand slipped and they poured just a little too much, or maybe it was the fire that was still too small, so instead of a blaze all that's left are the smoldering remains of a funeral pyre. maybe she's catching a cold or maybe it's something else, something that's sunk in bone-deep and refuses to get out, refuses to melt even when she burns her tongue on the hot cocoa. the tears in her eyes are from that burn. she's older than she looks and younger than she feels, but today her cheeks are numb from the wind and she can't even whip out a lacerating remark that she once would have found funny, a sort of joy that tastes like biting your lip until it bleeds, screaming your heart out and then some. all of this goes on under that coal-black mass of hair, inside her little restless brain, but it's not what you see. you're probably glad to see this bully, miss smartypants, this girl who's so convinced of her own importance with quivering lips and red cheeks out in the cold. you're probably relieved to know she's as mortal as the rest of us, that her heart is far from being made of stone, that somehow there's still some cosmic justice or karma or whatever you want to call it left to make things right. serves her right, for her mean words, for being willingly blind. serves her just right.
"Miss, your change," the cashier reminded her as she made her way to the door.
"Keep it. I don't care." Her voice was impeccably nonchalant, as expected of someone with sixteen years of practice at it. Her fingers were curled tight against the paper cup and the hot cocoa was burning them slowly, but she realized she didn't care about that, either.
