Here's a somewhat rough demo of how I draw fire. I usually go for a cell-shading type of style when it comes to fire. I used no blending tool here as I left the layers separate. Instead the glowing effect was on it's own layers with the airbrush. The rest was just the pencil/eraser on Hard Edge mode.
Three types of flames are depicted here: The middle being wild fire, energetic with sharp curves along with the smooth; Candle flame is gentle and remains smooth until disturbed ; The torch lands between the two having smoothness, but gaining energetic curves and angles.
