Story/
backstory/history:
A harsh wind blew threw the plain, stinging Venijn even through his thick pelt and feathers. Shivering slightly, he snuggled closer to his mother's warm chest. She smiled down at him, her eyes almost sad. This winter was the worst they'd had in years, and already many of the other Mir pups had perished in the biting cold and lack of food. The adults weren't much better off; every rib was visible down his mother's side, her hunger quite evident. As if the thought had urged on his stomach, it emitted a deep, low growl. He sighed, glancing down at Gunsteling, who was wrapped tight in between his paws. He grinned, and then closed his eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep.

When he woke, the land around him seemed oddly quiet. The only sound was a rushed wind whistling through the branches of a nearby dead tree. Normally the mornings were filled with the bustle of activity. He raised his head cautiously, sniffing the air. It reeked with the stench of decay. Frightened, he jumped to his feet, searching the area for any sign of movement. None of the other mirs remained; he and his mother were alone. He hurriedly rushed back to her, nudging her with his cold nose. She didn't move, not at all, as if her body were completely frozen in time; not even a breath stirred through her. Her Sari lay huddled between her paws, shuddering quietly in pain. Venijn cried out, backing away slowly. The sound woke Gunsteling, and the young Sari staggered to his feet and towards his Mir. Crying softly, Venijn sank to the ground, tears running down his cheeks. Taking one last look at his mother, he snatched Gunsteling up in his mouth and rushed into the forest.
