Helder Equines are a primitive species of pony native to the South American rainforest. They are fairly short rarely reaching 13 hands high; they are commonly between 10 and 12 hands and can be a little shorter or taller. Their name comes for European conquerors that thought the horses were hellish beasts the name possibly translates to "hell's door" in Dutch.
The defining feature of these equines is the four spikes that grow right around their withers. These spikes are made of sharp bones and reach about six inches in length. The spikes on the withers are always either white, cream or black the coloration is dependent upon the coat color. Often the fur around these spikes is slightly darker than the rest of the body. These spikes help to protect from predators like jaguars, they have been known to seriously injure the large cats. These ponies come in all possible horse colorations but are very rarely seen in any type of appaloosa pattern. Pinto patterns are very commons as well.
Helder Equines have groves in their front teeth that act like a comb to help with grooming their long water resistant mane, tail and feathering. They have large hooves that help keep them stable while moving on the leaf litter of the rain forest and also make the pony’s very strong swimmers.
These equines live in small herds typically consisting of three to eight females and one to two males. It is much more common to see two stallions in a herd than to not, this is because the spikes make mating more difficult and the pair is very vulnerable. The second male keeps watch for predators and is often related to the first male, brothers, half-brother and cousins are most common. Typically one male is more dominate than the other and will sire several more foals in a season than the less dominant male.
These equines are very aggressive and are very dangerous to ride. There have been a few report of them being used as farm horses because they are extremely strong for their size but that is very uncommon due to there aggressiveness.
