Information about the species
Physiology:
Dragon lemurs are about a foot tall when they stand on their back legs. Their tail is about a foot and ten inches. They possess medium length fur, but it can be either longer or shorter depending on their environment. They have a prehensile tail that they use for gripping branches and other perches, and they also have opposable thumbs that they use for picking up tools or food. Their wings are small and incapable of flight, but they do use them to glide. They have shearing and grinding teeth which allow them to eat both vegetation and meat.
Wild Lemur Dragons come in a variety of colors but most are duller, earthier tones that help them camouflage with their habitat. Domesticated Lemur dragons have a variety of patterns and colors thanks to selective breeding for beauty contest and other activities.
Abilities:
Lemur dragons have the ability to breathe fire. They use it to catch their prey, keep themselves warm, to mark their territory, and even cook their food. They have wings but cannot fly. Instead they use them to glide from tree to tree and for intimidation or to attract a mate. They have excellent night vision but have a poor sense of smell. They have a wide range of vocalizations that they use to communicate amongst their mob, call for a mate or young, or alert others of predators. They use clicks and chirps to communicate with hunting or locating their mob, growls and hissing when fighting or defending, and purrs and whimpers when showing affection to a mate or submission to a superior member.
Behavior:
Lemur dragons are quite sociable, at least amongst their own mob. They have a hierarchal system with two leaders, a mating pair, and then the capable fighters and teenagers, than the very young and old. They groom and care for each other to strengthen bonds and to assert their position in the group. They can be quite territorial; however, and will not tolerate another mob on their territory, especially if young is nearby.
Diet:
Lemur Dragons are omnivorous. They prefer meat, either scavenged or killed, but they will eat fruit, nuts, and vegetation when necessary. They will also eat a variety of insects, even the poisonous ones, as they are immune to most poison and venom.
They hunt in mobs of up to 10, but the leaders eat first and then the middle group and pups, and finally the lowest members.
Habitat:
They can live just about anywhere, but most are found in tropical regions. They adapt to their surroundings rather easily. What they learn in each habitat, they pass on to their offspring. They live in tress, or hallows of trees. Sometimes they can be found in caves or in burrows left behind by other animals.
Reproduction:
Lemur dragons can breed once a year and do not mate for life, however the two dominant dragons will typically breed together. They can have one to two pups per litter and will raise them for ten months before they are old enough to hunt with the mob or find their own territory. Unlike most hierarchal groups, any member can have kids, no matter how low, and each member of the mob, male or female, will take turns watching them at the home burrow while the others search for food. Lemur dragons are devoted parents and care for their young. There have even been sightings of mobs taken in orphan babes of rival mobs and raising them as their own.
