There are different sizes of Säbres. Males are typically larger than females, but there are no other obvious differences between eachother. As a newborn, they are about the size of small dog our house-cat. They grow quickly, and will stop growing after three years old- though some will reach physical maturity earlier. They have a long life-span. Males live up to thirty years, and females up to forty. They both reach sexual maturity when they are five years old, and can breed for the rest of their lives. After a mate is chosen, they breed for life, or until one of them dies. If a mate dies, the living Säbre will never breed again nor choose another mate. The female is the dominant gender- they usually take up the higher ranks and there are more of them than there are males.
Thick-horns have the largest population of the four. Then the Long-horns and Deer-horns. Moss-horns are extremely rare. They have a dark shade of purple moss growing on their horns. As a pup, they appear to be just like the other subspecies, but as they grow, so does the moss. The older a Moss-horn is, the more moss there will be. Only one out of every ten Säbres is a Moss-horn, and they are typically solitary. They only come together to breed, and they will then part ways. They claim small territories for themselves and live life alone and away from others. When they have pups, they have at most two- a small number compared to the usual four or five pups the other subspecies have.
There is a complex ranking system created by the Säbres. The Matriarch - a female leader - controls the entire subspecies. There are only three Matriarchs in existence at a time. After the Matriarch, are the Alphas and Betas. Alphas are only females, and there can be up to four of them at a time for each subspecies. Betas are males, and there are only two of them per subspecies, and sometimes none. The lower ranks are the hunters and soldiers, though both are very important to a subspecies. Apprentices are two to five years old. Only Betas, Alphas, and the Matriarchs can mentor apprentices, and they decide when an apprentice can graduate, which can be anywhere between three to five years old. A Matriarch's apprentice can only graduate into a Matriarch after the current one is deceased. Pups and elders are the most cherished part of a pack, and they always eat first. To be considered an elder, a Säbre must be at least 25 years old, though some are even older when they finally retire.
