Name: Ray Of Sunshine (Aya for short)
Gender: Female
Personality:
Bubbly and sweet, but with a bipolar side that can be quite violent and unbecoming. She has a bit of control over it, but if you manage to tick her off or break her heart, she'll go spiraling down that steep slope. However, 75% of the time she's the optimistic, wonderful girl that everyone wants to be around. She likes sunny days at the beach and flowers that smell nice that she can tuck behind her ear. Her favorite thing to do is dance, even though she's not the most grateful, she enjoys it, especially when one of her friends will serenade her with a little tune. A close second is creating odd sports -- such as whiffle-bat-run-tackle, which includes one chub holding a whiffle bat and hitting a ball tossed by a human, then running after it. They have to capture the large white ball, then takcle one of their friends -- but if they're tackled first, they lose. There are, of course, many intricate, well-thought out rules to make the game last all day until the sun grows low in the sky. She can't really hold a grudge, and has a horrible memory. Every day is like a blank slate for her, but that only makes her happy. Why be mad when you could love everyone, after all? She came up with her own nickname after stumbling over 'Ray of Sunshine' waaaaay too many times when she was a little filly. Her mouth simply couldn't compete with the tongue-twister. She has a sweet, not-quite-Southern drawl that makes her very charming when paired with her brilliant, not-a-bit-shy smile. She puts everything that she has into making others happy, even if it sometimes means going without or not being completely happy herself. In fact, she'd rather pair a handsome male she was in love with with one of her beloved friends just to see the two of them happy together rather than have a shot at him herself. Sometimes, in essence, she is a bit of a 'doormat', letting others trot all over her to get what they want. The way she thinks is very niave, childish, but sweet and hopeful. Her biggest wish is just to see everyone get along and be peaceful and happy together in this world that they share.
Story:
Aya trotted along, flashing a bright, pretty smile to whoever even so much as glanced her way. It was early morning, and some of the chubs were wearing less-than-happy expressions. One of them just happened to be Shay, whom Aya had grown quite close to. "Turn that frown upside down, silly Shay!" She trilled, bouncing up beside her. Shay playfully rolled her eyes and groaned, shaking her head.
"You're way too much of a morning chub for me, Aya. Surely the human isn't even awake yet." Shay moaned, bowing her head to shield her eyes from the bright sunlight and snorting unhappily as she ran her hoof across the grass.
"Of course Anastasia's awake! Who did you think gave me breakfast? I can't be this cheery without my breakfast!" Aya chirped, still grinning at her hopefully, her eyes sparkling gleefully. Shay, despite her rather moody outward appearance, was one of her best friends. "Apples and hay is just the way to start off your day, silly Shay, I've been telling you that for weeks! Why don't you ever try it? You'd be a morning chub too, if you had." She bobbed her head vigorously, giggling softly to herself at her little ryhme. She enjoyed rhyming a lot -- it even seemed to make her even more gleeful.
"Ugh. Breakfast. Don't even mention it." Shay prodded at her stomach with one hoof and shook her head begrudgingly.
"You'd feel better~" Aya sang out, gazing at the little birds in the trees. Aya liked the birds -- they were always cheerful and singing their little tunes to wake up all the chubs in a sweet, melodical fashion. She grinned and waved at the feathered little friends as they hopped along their branches, staring curiously at her with their shining, beady black eyes. "Morning birds!" She added perhaps a bit too loudly, with some serious pep. The birds sqawked in surprise, a few of them hopping a little further back on their branches. Shay, watching her friend, started to form a little smirk, her eyes dancing serenely.
"Leave the poor little lumps alone, Aya. Why don't you go bug Bronze? I've heard he's in a particularly wonderful mood today." Shay spoke in an obvious sarcastic imitation of Aya's own sweet little drawl, flipping her mane over her shoulder as she did with the tiniest of grins.
"Really? All he needs is a little sunshine to brighten up his day!" Just like that, Aya was galloping toward him.
Bronze cringed when he saw her coming, but how could he turn her away so cruelly? It was hard enough for him now to turn away Shay, even when he knew the girl was only plotting her pranks. "Morning, Aya." He sighed when he realized that he couldn't turn her away. Especially not with Candytuft and little Fae keeping a close eye on him from across the pasture to make sure that he played nice. The two of them glanced away when they saw him looking, giggling to themselves, but he knew.
"I heard you're not feeling the brightest today, Bronze-y! What's wrong?" Aya looked genuinely concerned, giving his mane a playful little nibble. "Today's going to be a good day! I can feel it!"
Bronze stared at her. "You say that about every day, Aya."
Aya giggled as she paused and nodded. "I guess I do, Bronze! I'm just so happy to be here with you and all of these other wonderful chubs -- " She paused again to glance around and grin at all of them, " -- that I can't help but think that every day is going to be absolutely amazing and perfect. How about you, Bronze? Are you happy to be here?"
"Of course I am." Bronze replied like it was the dumbest question ever. "I have everything I've ever wanted -- friends, family, a home!"
"See? What's to be down about? Turn that frown upside down, mister!" Aya semi-demanded, grinning widely at him. "Be thankful for what you have, and don't be afraid to show it! Your family's awesome, and so are you!" She pointed at him with one black-swirled hoof.
"Thanks, Aya." Bronze forced a smile just for her, eyes shimmering a bit. "I guess you're right."
"Darn straight!" Aya giggled loudly, then turned to trot back to Shay, only to see her friend had disappeared again, no doubt to plot one of her famous pranks. She found them quite funny, even when she was the poor victim. She'd brush it off, laugh it off, and Shay immediately returned to her good graces. Alone, she hummed as she turned around and around, finally deciding that young Fae could use some of her old-fashioned attention today. She trotted across the field where Fae was standing with her mother and grandmother, the three of them chattering away rather happily, like little birds, Aya couldn't help but notice. She plopped down beside them, eager to gab along.
"Have you seen that new male? He's so handsome." Candytuft crooned, staring at her granddaughter as she said it none too subtly.
"I have to admit, he's pretty good looking, dear." Tulip chimed in, staring at her daughter as well and grinning crookedly at her as she added, "You know, I was just about your age when I met your father, darling. Are you sure you don't want a mate?"
"Mommmm...," Fae groaned. "I don't want a mate yet. I want to play and have fun while I'm still young!"
"You might want to snatch a male while you can." Aya jumped into the conversation without a hitch, nodding a bit sagely at her as though she knew a single thing about having a mate or even a crush. "I've seen the males around here get snatched up pretty quickly!" The other two females nodded in obvious agreement, sharing a silent look between themselves while Fae just sighed, blushing and shaking her head slowly.
"I don't need one." Fae finally said, in a curt, short manner.
"Just think about it, dear. We know what we're talking about, believe it or not." Candytuft urged, looking at her granddaughter with slight worry.
"I agree. After all, you haven't even met him yet! You should introduce yourse -- " Aya stopped as she spotted the most gorgeous male she thought she had ever seen trotting across the pasture with a wide, happy smile. His forest-y looks caught and held her eye from the first glance, and her heart leapt up into her throat, making her voice cut itself short. "Or maybe not." She whispered to herself, then immediately blushed, feeling selfish. Her immediate feelings had been, of course, to make him her's -- darn any other female who wanted him, she must have this forest treasure! The male wandered even closer, and she did her best to hide her embarassment, letting her mane stray over her eyes and cheeks.
"Wow." Was all Fae managed to say, staring at him as well. It was obvious by a single look that she was just as smitten with the male's looks as Aya was. Even his simple wings held her attention like nothing else had ever been able to for the high-energy girl.
"I'm Forest Beetle. But my friends call me Beetle." He announced in a thicker drawl as he approached. Aya almost fainted.
But then she remembered the promise she had made to herself to be selfless, and tears sprung to her eyes. She immediately stood up, and galloped to the stables, leaving the others staring after her in surprise -- and Beetle longing after the beautiful young mare who had gotten away as she locked herself in her stall, haunted by visions of Fae and Beetle together, having children, growing old together. Little did she know what was in store for her...
