Thank you!
Start with a editable that looks simple. If it was made properly, there should be a "colour here" -or something of that sort- layer. Click on it and click Lock Alpha in the layers box. Now you can colour on that layer and not go out of the lines (: ONLY WORKS IF they created a base (usually grey), but you can do that yourself if you want by colouring grey on the "colour here" layer and then clicking Lock Alpha when you're done. Technically, it will not go out of the lines of the grey. So, if you don't colour your base (grey) up to the lines, it will stop where the grey stops.
If you want to erase something, un-click Lock Alpha because, if you don't, that part you erase will go white, not disappear...
Don't forget to try out different brushes :3 like pen, pencil, airbrush, etc.
To make your own drawing, make a layer for lines, a layer for colouring, a layer for the background, and if you want, add a layer for shading and extra things. "Lines" are always on top of all the layers. It can be any colour you want. It should go from bottom to top: Background, Colour, Shading, Lines. The little plus sign on your layers box adds them and, well, the minus removes a selected layer.
You can always ask me for help if you need it (:
