Switchblade and Amaranth are members of a species that grow large wings when they reach maturity. Amaranth, after desperately waiting and hoping for her wings to grow for so long, has eventually accepted that she is never going to get them. For any member of their species not having wings would be devastating as it's a serious physical disability, but it is doubly so for Amaranth, who was born a mute and already has difficulties interacting in the world without the added burden of being without wings.
Switchblade knows this; as he is also without wings, he is aware of the struggles that she will face, and he is determined to help her in any way he can. In the past Switchblade has made a lot of mistakes, and he does not want Amaranth to repeat them.
