Story:
Glowstone trudged through the snow, the cold wind buffeting his luminescent fur. he raised his head against the wind blowing snow into his bright eyes and gazed ahead. he needed to get out of the open area and to the forest, where the snow wouldn't blow as hard. but walking got harder and harder with every step he took. he was horribly hungry, but prey was scarce. he had insisted on going out hunting through the blizzard. his words came back to him now. "But our Myste will need more food to survive the blizzard. i need to go find more." he had told his mother. now the myste wont have any more food, and will have lost a hunter. i was so foolish to go out in this storm!snow was piling around his legs, and the pauses between each step became longer. Glowstone used the last of his strength to raise his head and pray to the sky for his myste to survive before he collapsed in the snow.
Glowstone awoke to a feeling of warmth by his side. He opened his eyes to see a pretty gray tabby cat crouched beside him. She opened her eyes to reaveal bright greenish-yellow pinpricks that stared at him with relief.
"finally, youre awake. you were close to getting yourself killed out there." she mewed as the cat stiffly stood up. "do you know how long i had to sit here by you to keep you from freezing?" Glowstone just blinked at her, confused. the cat sighed as she picked her way under branches to a small dip in the ground. it was lined with pine needles. really, the whole area had a carpet of pine needles covering the ground. Glowstone looked around the strange place. he lay at the base of a huge ancient pine tree. its long bottom branches hung low, touching the ground and creating a den. Higher branches kept too much snow from falling in, and needles littered the ground. The gray tabby was on the other side of the trunk, next to the shallow hole in the ground. two flower-stems away from the hole was a larrge smooth rock, surrounded by a few smaller rocks. The cat was sorting through a small pile of dry leaves and flower heads. she picked a leaf from the pile and gently carried it in her mouth to the smooth rock. she then grabbed a smaller rock in her mouth and, steadying it with her paws, ground the leaf into a thick pulp. she then pawed the green mixture into a large dry leaf resting beside her. She waved Glowstone over with her tail, so he carefully got up and shuffled over to her. that was when he noticed that the hole in the ground had water before turning to look at the huge leaf. in it the pulp of a few leaves had been mixed with a lot of water, making a thick green liquid.
"drink it." the cat only said two simple words, but Glowstone felt like fainting again.
"you want me to drink THAT!? that-that leaf juice?!"
"yes. it will help you regain strength."
"i cant drink that!"
"you have to. i already added honey."
"honey? but its winter."
"i found it in the summer and stored it."
"where?"
"i already used it all."
"i still want to know.
"i stored it in acorn caps which i placed all over the tree. now drink." Glowstone groaned but lapped up the bitter concoction. he could taste hints of the honey but it didnt help much. he gagged, but a stern look from the she-cat made him eat the rest. when he finished, the gray cat scrabbled up the trunk of the tree, her paws moving across old claw marks. she soon came down with a scrawny rabbit. it wasnt much, but Glowsystone was surprised she could even find a rabbit in the blizzard, much less be able to run fast enough through the snow to catch it. they settled down and ate, talking a bit between bites. Glowstone immediately felt better after eating, even though the meat was tough and hard to chew. he also found out a bit about the she-cat. her name was Hazelstripe. Her parents had both been loners but she decided to live with a group of cats living in the same territory as her parents until most of the group died from a drought. she learned how to survive on her own though still lives close to her parents.
"youre not a moon cat, are you?" Glowstone asked her.
"how could you tell? i dont have a moon marking or necklece. of course im just a normal cat."
"oops. sorry. but where do you get that water?"
"look outside, and tell me what you see." Glowstone coutiously poked his face out of the curtain of branches, but quickly pulled it back in as the sudden cold and blowing snow struck his nose.
"snow."
"exactly. snow is water but in a solid state. i melt it."
"how?"
"well, cats have body heat, dont we?"
"yes."
"exactly."
"oh. that makes sense." Hazelstripe had attitude, and was cocky, but Glowstone liked that about her. she acted like she knew so much about survival, but Glowstone didnt. And maybe it was true.
"what direction is my Myste?"
"its a bit north of here. not that youre leaving yet."
"why not? my family must be worried, and the Myste needs me to hunt!"
"look where that got you yesterday! buried unconsious under drifts of snow."
"but i must go back!"
"no. the blizzard is as strong as before. you wont get anywhere and ill just have to haul you back here again. and its not like youll have more prey to bring back."
"then what are you suggesting i do?"
"stay here for a few days. as long as we stay close to the tree i can teach you how to survive the winter better. thats what being a loner is good about." Glowstone stayed with her for a few days, and Hazelstripe taught him how to hunt without drawing too much attention with his glowing fur. in a few days the storm died down, Hazeltail showed Glowstone back to the camp with some prey. Hazeltail is now his best friend, and he visits her often.
