The markings on his back are called runes and are a strange alphabet that has been observed to change in ancient European history. This set comes from the Anglo-Saxen expansion, found here: link. Their meanings aren't incredibly important, though if he's chosen I suppose a story could be made from them.
In order, they are "year", "yew", "stone", "chalice", "oak", "gift", "Tyr" (I believe Tyr was a prominent God of the time.) The scar on his eye is also a rune for "fire."This character could be a boy or a girl, according to the owner's preference, but I picture it as a boy.
