First off, the mother's name is Carmin. The puppy's name is Max.
The woman hugged her boyfriend tightly, and rested her head on his shoulder, "Do you think she'll make it?"
He squeezed her against himself, a small smile playing on his worried face. He kissed her head, and murmured, "Of course, Sophie. She's a tough one." She laughed a little bit, and flicked away the tear. Sophie thought of the day she had met Carmin, the starving stray dog on the sidewalk. She'd ran right up to Sophie, nudging her lightly. She looked completely pitiful, every bone visible, her fur matted with clots of mud and debris. Her eyes, however, her bi-colored eyes held the world in them. She had a spark of life that Sophie could not believe. She'd taken her in, fed her, cleaned her up, brought her to the vet. Everyone loved how playful and lovely she was. Such a great pup, they'd all said. "It's amazing she's a stray!" Only a week after Sophie had saved her had she heard the small muttering. She found Carmin underneath the deck of her house, 3 small bodies nestled against her. They seemed to have not made it. Carmin was twitching and whining. Sohpie had brought her to the vet, and, now, here they are.
The female vet they knew so well strolled out of the office, her blue gloves still on. "Well, Sophie. It seems Carmin was pregnant. She gave birth prematurely, leading to the loss of the previous puppies; however, there is one left. It's a boy. We aren't sure how long he'll make it."
It's funny, really. That boy made it longer than Sophia. That puppy made it longer than they thought it would. But the inevitable had to happen. He and his mother had been adopted by Sophie's boyfriend after she had passed away abruptly. He had not been paying attention very well, Max was a rowdy little guy, but, in the last month or so of his life, he'd shown the heart signs. He'd been lethargic, more so than usual. He'd been exhausted, unable to play. The doctor told him he did not feel any pain, but Carmin did.
