Shard walked to the far wall and leapt onto a ledge about five feet up, then to the shelf that was his den, another five feet. On the ledge there was enough room for him to lie down and not be seen. He lied down with a huff and gazed at the she-wolf that had not laughed at his expense. Nalia. Her head turned and her soft ,brown eyes met his for a moment before Shard looked away.
He directed his gaze towards the largest outcropping. Roan hopped nimbly up and settled down in a fluffy nest of owl down. A thickly muscled male with deep grey fur jumped up beside Roan. It was Ko, the alpha male. Shard snorted and tucked his head under his tail. Everything seemed perfect for everybody, but him.
Shard opened his eyes to find himself in a glittering ice cave. The ceiling was a dome and it chiseled down to form the paw worn ice floor. Small holes dotted the walls and bushy white creatures wove busily past him. A white ball of fluff slipped from a hole and padded towards him.
It was a fox. It had a slender form and pure white fur. It’s blue eyes were placid and wide. All of the, sudden Shard heard a voice, but not physically. An echo seemed to vibrate though his ear canals and ripple behind his eyes “I am glad you have arrived,”
“Who are you?” Shard asked beginning to feel a sense of foreboding
“Do not fear, young wolf, I am a dream fox. My name is Aashio.” Aashio still gazed at Shard
“What is a dream fox?” he asked cautiously “Foxes are kill thieves. They ambush us and steal our homes.” Aashio dipped his head
“I have no control over our brethren in the mortal world,” he echoed “They bring us shame. The dream foxes are the good spirits of the foxes. We were driven from them and forced to live elsewhere long ago.” He waved his tail at the cave “But, back to your question. Dream foxes try to regain their mortal bodies and reclaim the good name of foxes. I have not yet found my body, but perhaps someday…” Aashio suddenly looked defeated and drooped his head to look at his paws. Shard was almost washed away by a wave of sympathy, but before he could open his mouth to speak Aashio was buzzing in his ears “Do not feel pain for me,” he sounded barely above a whisper “There was no other way.” The fox tilted his head to look at Shard, his eyes pained “I sense you want an explanation?” Aashio flopped down on his belly and put his head on his paws.
Shard’s sight shivered madly and his ears buzzed like a swarm of wasps. But insted of a vioce the scenery changed and he was standing in a large snow field. A fox with blinding white fur walked behind him. It had black freckles coating it’s body and its head sagged.
