Heres some tips:
When you add markings to a horse, use the pencil and add the markings, then use the smudge tool, dragging the marking outward, it creates more of a hair look. Also, when you do the mane, use the airbrush tool, it takes longer but it outlines it much better. The tail can be done with just the pencil, and at the bottom of the tail use the airbrush. Also, use the dodge and burn tools on the hoof, to create the stripes.
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.
