It's unusually cold for the time of year. The black-berries came and went a
full moon ago, even on the latest fruiting plants. There's frost on the ground
already, and the wind is ripping through the trees. The days start off sunny
and pleasant, and then, as suddenly as the thunder they contain, they break,
andthe rest of the day is only rain. This is not good weather to be outside.
During Autumn, there is a lowered chance of catching prey while hunting,
kittings will go harder, and there are more predators around.
Be careful, warriors!

Things definitely were not going to be easy. The stranger that had taken Raptorstar's eye was right. But Raptor had always been a fighter, and he would continue to fight. Always. Starclan, though he had once turned his back on them, seemed agreeable to help, just as shaken up by this sudden worldly change as Raptor had been. He had a long discussion with someone he didn't think he'd have to see again.

"Raptor," a cold voice rang out, making Raptor shiver even though there was no cold. He couldn't feel in this dream-like state, and he hated it. He had always hated it. "You finally turned your face to us, instead of your back. We should deny you right here, and we would, if the times weren't strange. Explain yourself."

Raptor steeled himself for a few moments, drawing a deep breath. "Father..." he only managed to spit out one word, realizing nothing good would happen if he kept an attitude. He needed help, not to turn his back again. Raptor sighed, closing his eyes briefly before staring at the starry pelt of his father. "I have come because I realize I was wrong to turn my back to Starclan. I realize that I cannot survive in this strange world; my eye is enough proof that I need."

His father nodded, an almost amused look coming to his eyes. "So we are only tools for you if you need help?"

Raptor nearly growled. He suspected this was how the conversation would go. "I understand that my actions have been frustrating. I can not and will not continue to turn my back to my ancestors. I am willing to put my trust back in them."
Now his father did laugh, though it didn't sound like he was amused anymore. "You make it sound like you just denied our existence. Really, it would have been better if you had. No, instead you decided to believe in something - the Dark Forest."

"I only did that because I had no reason to believe in Starclan anymore! I thought they, that you, had turned their back on me!" Raptor did his best to keep the anger out of his voice, but he was failing. He remembered going to Starclan in desperation, asking them to do something, do anything, for his mate and unborn kits who had been taken from him. They had been stolen by Twolegs. He had no idea where they want, but Starclan knew. They always knew. But they refused to tell him where they were, so he could at least see them.

"Of course we turned our back on you, we-" Raptor's father was cut off by another approaching figure, having only been watching from behind until now. "Enough!" The sharp voice rang out, and Raptor's father immediately flinched, his tail twitching, backing away; though not before he cast one last glare at Raptor. Raptor did not cringe under his father's stare as he once might have.

"Raptor. You have come asking us for help. As your father has already said, normally we would not offer help to a cat who has denounced us entirely and thoroughly. However, given the circumstances of both your past, and I admit, our past mistakes, and that you were even willing to face us after what you had done... we will help you."

A surge of excitement rose up in Raptor's chest. Yes! They would help! But the hope was cut short when the leader gave him a sharp look. "We will help you... with one condition. We will only give you five lives for your clan, whatever you call it. We will require you to find a second leader for your clan, and we will give them a life ceremony of four lives. It will do you well to have someone to keep you in check."

"I understand," Raptor said, looking down at his feet so that the starry cat could not see the angry flash of his eyes. He could do this on his own, but they weren't going to even give him a chance. "Thank you."
The large tom did indeed receive his five lives after that, though he was fuming even after he became Raptorstar. This world has become nothing but chaos... he nearly yowled out loud - though he didn't want to attract any unwanted attention in his new camp he had made. No more attention besides the one cat Starclan had sent - a hunter to help him gather prey to hopefully attract new clan members. Duskwillow was her name, and she normally kept to herself. Raptorstar hadn't seen much of her yet, but he didn't care.

The world became chaos. Yes. That was exactly what he needed to produce, if he was going to survive in a world of chaos. Chaosclan. They would bring more entropy to the already savage world. Chaosclan would fight back. Raptorstar gave himself a small smile, ready to tackle any obstacle that was thrown his way.

it was still the beginning of leaf-fall, and the day that she went into labor was a beautiful day; not too hot nor too cold, with a soft warm light shining down. angelica and sky had moved her into the medicine cats den a few days prior, as she had begun to feel harsher and more frequent pangs in her stomach, indicating she would be joined soon by her kits; the rit zien & grigori called it a precaution. while the process itself was quite painful for the incredibly young mother, she managed to remain calm enough to only hiss and moan out her pain, rather than screeching and hollering. she first gave birth to a healthy black and white tom who was meowing loudly from the moment that he came out, but after cleaning him up, angelica nudged him towards his mother's belly, and his little cries silenced as he began to feed. the second kit came out silently, not making a single sound, and her heart stopped; was the little one alive? angelica and sky both worked quickly as they licked the little one to stimulate it; they spoke to each other in hushed tones for a bit before angelica picked up the dilute calico and set it beside her brother. the little kit began to suckle as well, which soothed harp's motherly worries, but she looked to angelica for an explanation of the kits silence. "its hard to tell since she's so young, but it appears she has some hearing trouble. the extent of which will only become apparent as she grows. other than that, she and her brother are both healthy.".

it could be far worse.. was the thought that filled the mom's mind as she began to lick her kits, trying to sooth herself. as the little family grew quiet, enjoying each others presence, the clan's archangel cumulus made his way gently into the medicine cats den. he smiled warmly as he saw the two kits nuzzling their mother's belly, and he approached with his head lowered to the queen. "congratulations harp, they both are beautiful. have you decided on names for them yet?" his voice was soft, not wanting to disturb the kits as he spoke to their mother. she was quiet for a bit, in her own head as she made sure she was content with the names she had picked, and slowly she nodded before speaking. "yes, i believe we have. the tom will be cinnabar, also known as nettlekit. and the molly will be willow beauty, also known as satinkit." the tom smiled at he names, nodding his head in agreement at how they seemed to perfectly fit the little ones. "those are lovely names harp. well done. I shall leave you be, and go give he joyous news to the clan. get some rest." he smiled at the family again, but as he left the room, angelica followed to inform him of satinkit's possible birth defect.

sky remained in the den but went to sorting through herbs, turning his back on the family and returning to his own thoughts, which in turn allowed the new nursing-mother to get lost in her own thoughts. harp herself had never known the father of her kits, but briarwhisper surely did, and while the birth of her kits were a joyous moment for the new mother, she couldnt help but feel a pang in her heart as she thought of her ex-mate, how he hadn't even known she was pregnant with his kits when they had separated, and how he would never meet or know their kits. harp's rational thinking told her this was for the better, that it was safer for all parties involved, and while briarwhisper's head knew that the angel in her was right, her heart still ached a bit.

crescentmoon and lunawing had been on their own for pretty much their entire lives. their parents had been former clan cats whose clan had fallen apart due to illness when their mother was pregnant for the first time. they decided not to join another clan after the failure of their first, and so crescentmoon was born into the life of a loner. he was the strongest kit born out of 3; he has a twin brother who was very sickly from his first breath, and a twin sister who was rather healthy but wandered off one day and was taken by a hawk. his father took this as crescent being the only one worthy of life, due to his clear strong survival instincts, but his mother never really looked at him the same way, almost blaming him for surviving when his siblings had not. six moons after his birth, his parents had another litter on the way, but this time only one kit was born, tiny little lunawing. their mother fawned over the kit, who had been born earlier than expected and was rather small. however, their father spent little time getting to know his new daughter, and spent nearly all of his time training his firstborn son how to be the very best warrior that a loner could be. tragedy struck when luna was about five moons old, however, when the family was crossing a thunderpath and their mother was crushed by a monster when rushing back to shove luna out of the way. due to this, their father blamed his daughter for his mate's death, and when his son tried to defend his sister, their father leapt at the pair, slashing crescentmoon across the hip and causing a massive scar and a slight limp that the tom has lived with since he was 11 moons old.

ever since this moment in their youth, the pair of siblings have been on their own. crescent had then taught luna everything that he had known to teach her; from defending herself, to hunting for prey to fill their belles. they had survived as loners for nearly twenty moons now, before luna found herself haunted every night by the same dream. in it, there were many cats, all so bright white that they almost appeared to glow, that surrounded her in what appeared to be a two-leg graveyard just outside of a large church building that was rather rundown. she tried to speak to them, tried to ask who they were and where she was, what was happening, but she could not utter a single sound or syllable. there was, however, a single cat who was rather unique in appearance; it had heterochromatic eyes, and was completely hairless. yet it still had such a graceful, strong aura about it. the strange cat spoke to her about a grand plan, about a clan that needed cats like them to achieve its mission, to bring light into the world and stop darkness from spreading. she awoke every time from the dream with her mind entirely clear from distractions, and finally after about a moon of the dreams, she began to follow her gut and she went where she felt called. her brother thought she was crazy, his mind not as open as hers was to these types of things, but he followed her nonetheless.

both cats could tell they had crossed a clan border, for the scent of unknown cats had been strong, but while crescent tried to stop her, luna felt even more called to press on. she ended up racing into the unknown at such a pace that she lost her brother; but their presence had not come unknown to the clan cat. in a heartbeat, her run was cut off by a flash of black; a tom cat had her pinned, his ears pinned as his green eyes barreled into her. but for some odd reason, she felt no fear at the sudden attack, and as her golden eyes met his green ones, his piercing eyes softened a bit. she did something to him that he had never before experienced; the ice that he had hardened around his heart began to melt, just the smallest bit. luna flashed him a shy smile, and opened her mouth to speak when a massive cat of orange fur pulled the black tom off of her, tossing him back behind him. quickly getting to her paws, she noticed her brother standing between two other cats, a gray and white tom and a dilute calico molly. her gold eyes returned to the large tom standing infront of her, and while his own green eyes were still narrowed, he gave her a polite nod of the head before speaking. "your brother says that you have come to us because of a dream; it appears that you are meant to be here. the hairless cat with two different colored eyes; that is cirrus, she was our milktuft's mentor. she led you here for a reason; we shall take you to our leader now. come."

xxxxxxx Snowstorm, Softdapple, Riverstone, and Cinderdust pricked their ears. “Who was that?” Cinderdust asked. Snowstorm quickly hushed her with a sharp tail swish. The four stood frozen in their places. To their left, slight rustling of bushes and crackling of leaves underfoot continued. Snowstorm signaled to the patrol to crouch down, and he creeped forward. Between branches he could see a large group of straggly looking cats. He wished he had a larger and more threatening patrol than just three young and excitable mollies. He ordered them to slowly meet up with him and they all stood up together.
xxxxxxx“Get the hell off our territory!” Snowstorm fluffed up his fur and snarled. Softdapple looked like an overweight hedgehog with all of her fur standing up but with her teeth bared, it was somewhat threatening. Riverstone and Cinderdust stood side-by-side with claws fully out and ready to fight.
xxxxxxx This display was only met with howls of laughter from the ragtag group. The biggest and meanest looking cat stepped forward so that they were nose-to-nose with Snowstorm. “I’m not so sure about that,” His voice was low and rough but only from a hard, long life. It was obvious their threats didn’t faze him one bit. “I’ve had a good look around and you know what? I think we’ll stay.” His face broke into a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Let’s head out, lads.” The troop scrutinized the clan cats for a few seconds more before turning and slowly and purposely walking away.
xxxxxxxOne of the smaller cats, and more taken care of, looked familiar. He was also trying very hard not to be spotted. “That’s Dexter, isn’t it?” Riverstone hissed. Snowstorm craned his neck and watched his tail disappear back into the overgrowth. It sure did look like it was. That snake! Snowstorm thought bitterly. Dexter wasn’t allowed in TwistedClan, so he got a hostile group of rouges to compete with them? Very underhanded if Snowstorm could say.
xxxxxxx“We need to report this to Twistedstar immediately.” Snowstorm said.

xxxxxxx Crowtalon led his hunting patrol towards the far sides of their territory. He was slowly replacing the hole in his heart that Valleyrunner had left…by ignoring the emptiness and focusing on hunting and making sure Mountainpaw was ready for his warrior assessment. Flameleap was also silently stewing in his own thoughts. He was disturbing the traces of what little prey was left over from that raggedy rouge group by angrily slashing his tail every now and then. “Can. You. Not?” Crowtalon hissed at him and knocked him back. He lost his balance and flopped in the dirt. Thistlefur and Honeytail gave Crowtalon a dirty look. “Go on, we’ll catch up.” He muttered and shooed them off. Petalfall and Tigerstrike also gave them a wide berth as they scurried away. “What’s their problem?” He grumbled.
xxxxxxx “Probably didn’t like you shoving me to the ground.” Flameleap stood and cleaned off stray leaves from himself.
xxxxxxx “I wouldn’t have to shove you if you would stop moping and start hunting.” Crowtalon snapped.
xxxxxxx “Really? It’s not because you’ve been in a bad mood ever since Valleyrunner left?” Flameleap’s voice rose and shoved his face in Crowtalon’s face.
xxxxxxx “I wonder why I’m upset?” Crowtalon’s voice lowered. “Maybe it’s because my mate left and took my two daughters? No, that would make too much sense.”
xxxxxxx “I have the right to be angry!” Flameleap argued. “Nightpelt essentially turned me down, so we’re in the same situation.”
xxxxxxxCrowtalon softened a little. “I guess we are.” The two stood face-to-face; neither wanted to be the first on to look away. “Er, we should get back to hunting.” Crowtalon murmured.
xxxxxxx Flameleap quickly turned his face to the side. He wouldn’t meet his eyes. “R-right.”

xxxxxxx“Hello, Stormheart!” Maplebreeze purred as her brother’s hunched frame entered the nursery. A chorus of tiny ‘hellos’ greeted him as the kits swarmed around. He skillfully wrapped his tail around his leg to dissuade them from pulling it, but it was still fluffy enough for a couple stray claws to grab onto. He grimaced. “Goldkit, I told you to put your claws away.” Maplebreeze scolded. She stood and licked his face a few times. “How’ve you been?”
xxxxxxx“Thundercry is finally feeling better.” Stormheart changed the subject. “They’re all getting so big!” He exclaimed, looking at the sea of fluff surrounding him. “You’re going to suffocate in here soon.”
xxxxxxx “You’re telling me.” Shadow grumbled from the corner. She had built her nest in the very corner, out of sight from all entrances.
xxxxxxx “Do you have any idea when Dexter is going to visit?” Stormheart asked under his breath. Maplebreeze shook her head with wide eyes. It was clear those thoughts were worrying her at well. “That’s if he comes back.” Stormheart tried to backtrack. “The last time we spotted him, he was hanging around those rouges.”
xxxxxxx That had the opposite desired effect on the queens. “He’ll come back with allies.” Maplebreeze moaned.
xxxxxxx “I hope they slit his little lying throat.” Shadow hissed. Maplebreeze tried and failed to bring all four of her kits close to her, but they squirmed away.
xxxxxxx“Stormheart, can you teach us how to fight?” Pinekit pulled on his leg.
xxxxxxx“Yeah!” Beetle bared his teeth. “Then we can slash throats!”
xxxxxxxMaplebreeze let out an exasperated gasp. “Don’t talk about those things in here, they pick everything up.” She scolded her brother.
xxxxxxxShadow interjected. “It wouldn’t hurt for them to learn some self-defense, Maple.”
xxxxxxx“Maplebreeze.” She corrected softly, too quiet for Shadow to hear.
xxxxxxx“I’ll teach them how to stalk,” Stormheart pushed her gently. “It’ll get them out of your hair. It’ll be fun.”

xxxxxxxFrostpaw felt very strange feeling around for little bundles of life in Rainsong’s abdomen, but that was how he was spending his afternoon. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was supposed to be finding, well kits obviously, but he felt very pressured with Galalight looming over him. “What do you think?” She murmured.

xxxxxxx“Um,” Frostpaw quickly glanced at Galalight for confirmation, but she just pushed his head back towards the molly. “Yes?”

xxxxxxxFrostpaw shut his eyes tightly and focused on the faint movements underneath his paw. There! He felt a small shift and this time he was sure it wasn’t just digestion. “Yes! There’s kits in here!” He called out.
xxxxxxxRainsong purred. “Thank you for the joyful announcement.” Frostpaw ducked in embarrassment, but Galalight playfully cuffed him.

She passed some herbs to be laid out to dry to Frostpaw, and he obediently backed out with his mouth full of leaves. He spat them out on a flat rock close to the cabin and got to work placing them in the sunlight. He glanced at the sky. The sun was still high, but it wouldn’t be for long. Even Ashkit, Featherkit, and Hollykit were joining the miniature training session, so he had a whopping twelve kits to keep in line. Luckily, Neritefang was standing by to help and Marsh had decided to yell only somewhat useful information from his sunning rock. Stormheart puffed out his chest. This was the first time since Quietstep had died that he felt truly in control of his life. “Can anyone tell me what they are?”

xxxxxxxBack to the throat slashing, Stormheart didn’t think Maplebreeze and Shadow were going to be amused. “Yes, you also want to protect your throat.” He said gently. “Both your neck and head are important to keep safe from stray claws and fangs.”
xxxxxxx “I think I know the last place,” Hollykit said. He sounded respectful and earnest, the first time Stormheart had witnessed his not-jaded personality. “It’s your belly.”
xxxxxxx “Correct!” Stormheart praised him and Hollykit sat up a little straighter. Ashkit gave him an odd look and shoved him off balance. He lightheartedly spat at her in retaliation. “As I was saying,” Stormheart gave them a stern look. “you want to keep your head, throat, and belly as safe as possible as those are your weakest points. Neritefang, would you like to demonstrate a possible attack and I will defend myself?”

xxxxxxx Nightpelt didn’t appreciate how quiet his life had gotten ever since Flameleap and him stopped speaking. It was strange how much time Flameleap had spent telling him stupid puns and odd observations; he truly didn’t know what he had until it was gone. He had already tried apologizing to Flameleap but must have done something wrong as he remained just as upset as before. He shook his head to clear his thoughts. A nice cold drink of water should do him good. He avoided his clanmates in case they wanted to talk. Nightpelt hated small-talk and wanted to just be in his own head. He carefully made his way down to the banks avoiding cutting his pads on any sharp rocks when he heard faint chatter. Nightpelt paused and closed his eyes. It sounded like a couple of toms. The worst-case scenario would be a small party of rouges, Nightpelt thought. He crept forward, careful not to send rocks scattering down the bank. Through the branches, it seemed there were only two toms. I could take them down if I had to, Nightpelt peered closer, though that might be pushing it. Creeping ever closer, he could identify the cats. They were sitting rather close to each other, closer than Nightpelt would have liked, and seemed to be talking and laughing and having a good time. The slightly smaller of the two, the orange one, leaned on the other’s shoulder which elicited a tender lick to the cheek. Nightpelt felt a burning pain flow through his entire body, from his ears to his half-tail tip. Since when were Flameleap and Crowtalon so close?

xxxxxxxSunchaser was absolutely elated when he heard that Rainsong and him were finally having their own kits. However, there was another cat Rainsong felt she needed to tell right away. Patchedmask was eating a small mouse alone. He still hadn’t seemed to fully integrate with TwistedClan, perhaps still feeling odd about having an unknown forbidden relationship with Rainsong. She casually approached him, not wanting to draw too much attention. What was she thinking? She was allowed to talk to another one of her clanmates! But she was still weary of rumors spreading, especially with Patchnose looking so much like his father. Patchedmask’s face lit up when he saw who was standing in his light. “What do I owe this pleasure?” He smiled. “Care for a bite?” He offered some of his mouse to her, but she declined.

xxxxxxx “Hopefully with Sunchaser?” His eyes had a playful twinkle that oh, she just realized she missed. Lately Sunchaser’s eyes only had a worried look buried deep down.

iindentpadding at her side, the calico she-cat panted heavily, her chest heaving with each breath and her rotund belly swaying as they walked. ashenstep had encountered the pregnant molly just near pyreclan’s western border, resting in some shrubbery from the day’s cool breeze. now, however, watching her hardships unfold, the warrior felt guilty about having made her stand and walk the distance they did now, seeing how difficult it was for her to keep-up in the condition she is currently in. but knowing it would be better worth the struggle to have her in a safe, more reliable place to rest her body and prepare for the kits, rather than alone without another to aid her, ashenstep never thought back on her decision.

iindentstopping to pause for the third time along their trekk, the calico shook her head in disdain and sighed, furrowing her brows. “sorry to hold you up,” she breathed, glancing upwards towards the other she-cat, as if in embarrassment. “it’s rather difficult carrying this load around.”

iindent“oh please, don’t apologize,” ashenstep waved her off, shaking her head with a smile along her maw. “we’ll keep going at your pace; it’s important to me you are doing alright.” the embarrassment seemed to fade from the molly’s expression entirely, replaced with a grateful smile, and then picked herself up onto her four paws and begin trotting ahead of the other, feathery tail swaying in content. “thank you, really.” she returned with a bow of her head, earning another smile in return from the other she-cat.

iindentafter a few moments of silence, in curiosity, the warrior turned to meet the other cat’s eyes, tilting her head slightly to the side. “so, how long have you been alone like this?” she questioned softly, though tentatively, as she hoped she wasn’t going to hit any sour-nerves. but the pregnant she-cat seemed to have no problem with replying to this question, glancing over her shoulder to the other to meet their gaze with her own. “well, ever since the wildfires i would believe.” she began with a shrug, glancing back to the forest before them. “the tom who got me like this,” she chuckled at this, shaking her head once more. “he vanished in the flames like the rest of them.”

iindentbowing her head, ashenstep nodded solemnly, watching the queen’s eyes fog in thought. “i’m sure he’ll watch over your kits in starclan.” she concluded, the atmosphere still and quiet following their conversation. the she-cat seemed untroubled by this, however, and simply nodded at the other’s words. “thank you.” she murmured, near inaudibly, and the silence returned.

iindentstepping into camp with the molly at her side, a wave of relief blew through the two as they glanced toward one-another with smiles. the calico, having finally found the time to rest, immediately plopped-down onto her haunches, breathing a heaving breath. ashenstep left her between the two boulders at their entrance, entering the camp vacant of cats due to their patrols, and making her way toward the hollowed-out stump where chervilgaze, the medicine cat, made his den. she entered through the gaping entrance, peered within the shadows, and found the tom organizing herbs into their separate sections of the wooden walls, their leafy tendrils peeking through the cracks. “chervilgaze,” ashenstep began, catching the cat’s attention. “i have someone i’d like for you to take a look at.”

iindentthe long-haired told swiveled on his paws, turning himself around to view the she-cat that spoke to him. he looked toward her, meeting her eyes with a nod of his head, and padded a step closer. “alright, take me to them.” he returned, seeming serious and worried of what she had to show him. they guided out of the den and into the clan’s camp, and once the tom saw the calico sitting at the entrance, with her round stomach drooping to the side, his expression cleared and a smile replaced it. “a queen?” he questioned, turning his head toward the warrior, who nodded with a smile themselves.

iindentit didn’t take long for the medicine cat to greet the new female, introduce himself, and to examine her condition in what he could do. he determined she was fine and healthy, maybe a bit malnourished and in need of some sustenance, but nothing too alarming in any way. gannetleap seemed pleased and rather relieved by this news, a sigh escaping beneath her breath at his analysis, and she was eager to be escorted off to her den where she would soon, within two moon’s time, bear her kits which swelled within her stomach. ashenstep was there throughout the whole process, at her side, and helped escort her to her new den. once she was laid-down and comfortable in her nest, she and the medicine cat left to give her some space for much-needed rest, in a more proper environment.

iindent“what a lovely she-cat,” chervilgaze murmured to the warrior, glancing toward her with a smile pulling at his lips. “i’m sure pyrestar will be ecstatic to meet her.” they both shared in a bout of chuckles, then separated into their different dens, ashenstep resting to prepare herself to the night’s patrol.

iindenthowever, all the while, the she-cat’s mind spun with thoughts, most being focused on a single prospect she’d longed to explore—having her own kits. its wasn’t something she and her mate, martinfang, had spoken much of since they started their relationship just last moon, but it was something she’d been reminded of. it was always something the she-cat longed since she’d first begun her apprenticeship all those moons ago, having spent their off-days aiding the queens in the nursery, and, not to mention, entertaining the endless bounds of kits. even then, ashenstep knew she’d one day become a mother, if the could, and now felt like the right time. but she questioned if her mate would feel the same, and the thought of his rejection frightened her—would he decline, claiming they weren’t prepared, or it was too early?

iindentthe she-cat drew air into her lungs, released with a sigh, and concluded within her racing thoughts that she would simply bring the topic up with him that night, when they would prepare to patrol at dusk. this managed to calm her nerves in a way, and she gladly drifted-off into a peaceful sleep.

iindentthe air was stagnant, cool, but not a single cat shifted in their place. they watched the leader leap to their stand as they always did, facing the ever-growing crowd of cats that gathered, a smile pulling onto his maw, and his tail swishing rhythmically behind. “cats of pyreclan, tonight is one many have been anticipating.” he began, voice raising to an alto over the cat’s murmurings.

iindent“as you may recall, last moon i announced that a future deputy could be among you. tonight, i feel as a clan that we can sense our deputy among us—but you’ll have to find them, bring them to stand up and take their rightful place.” pyrestar then paused, lowering onto his haunches, and wrapping his feathery tail around his paws. “i have been observing the lot of you this past moon, deciding whom i feel best for the role, but this is not my decision to make,” he continued, voice echoing throughout the camp. “the clan will choose, and i will simply watch.”

iindent“so, everyone, do i have any volunteers?”

iindent“aye!” a call echoed, the savannah she-cat, strawberrynose, standing to her paws, lumbering over the majority of the cats in the crowd. she glanced throughout the pairs of eyes that turned toward her, straightened herself, then began to speak with little hesitation present to hinder her words. “i would like to be a candidate for the role of deputy.”

iindentan utterly pleased smile curled on the tom’s maw, tucking his chin to his chest as he locked-eyes with the molly. it was as if he’d been waiting for her to speak, expecting her to be the first, and be ready to welcome her forward. “ah, strawberrynose,” he echoed, earning back the clan’s attention. “please come forward.”

iindentshe weaved her path through the crowd of cats, finally making her way to the stump which pyrestar sat, used as a podium of the sorts. he greeted her with a curt nod of his head, then turned his head back toward the clan, which gathered patiently. “anyone more?” he questioned, though his voice seemed tinged with amusement, as if the question weren’t as serious as it originally had been. however, unexpectedly, the tom was caught off-guard by a voice that followed his two words; “yes!” it echoed.

iindentscanning his eyes throughout the crowd, pyrestar caught the eyes of ternwhisker, the she-cat rising onto her paws, her posture straightening immediately. “i would also wish to be a candidate.” his smile remained formed on his lips, but a hint of surprise flashed through his yellow-green eyes, peering toward her with their striking color. with a nod of his head, the she-cat followed the path of her now competitor through the crowd and joined at her side, not daring to meet her eyes, onto sitting-tall with her eyes hovering over the cats before her.

iindent“our two candidates, strawberrynose and ternwhisker, have volunteered themselves to fill the currently unoccupied role of deputy, and pyreclan must decide which they feel more worthy.” then rising onto his paws, turning himself toward the pair, he met their eyes with an utmost seriousness. “this is a highly-crucial role of the clan to take-on, and as i presume, you both have considered the presumptions. you must prepare yourselves, for this is no simple task.” the leader began once more, addressing them directly with the crowd in utter silence. “now the clan will judge you, and they will be the ones to decide.”

iindentminutes passed, as the cats murmured among one-another, and the two females shifted uncomfortably in their places. strawberrynose seemed composed, holding herself poised and straight, whereas ternwhisker shifted her wary eyes throughout the crowd, body tense and noticeably anxious. finally, a single cat, that being martinfang, raised their voice over the others as the clearing fell into silence once more. “we have made our choice.” he spoke, standing on his paws while flicking his tail fluidly behind. “the majority believe strawberrynose should be our deputy.

iindentternwhisker froze, feeling as if her heart had completely clenched to a halt, and her throat clogged with a lump, one of emotions she could not decipher.

iindentpyrestar stood once more, bowed his head, and called into the crowd. “then it has been decided; strawberrynose, please step forward.” the she-cat, without thinking twice about it, rounded around ternwhisker and stood before the stump, gazing upward into the leader’s eyes. “i say these words before starclan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my, our, choice;” the tom began, his words bellowing into the clearing, with the clan silenced and listening intently. but ternwhisker swore that she could hear her heartbeat pounding in her chest, never ceasing to wrack her body with its force.

iindent“the new deputy pyreclan is strawberrynose.”

iindentlater that evening, when the air was cool and a chilling breeze flowed throughout the forest, ternwhisker trudged toward the rear of the patrol, the new deputy being at its forefront. ashenstep was padding at her side, remaining silent yet keeping an ear faced toward her. she shifted her eyes to her own every so often, checking on her condition, but always met by that empty stare and emotionless expression. the she-cat sympathized with the warrior, felt guilt flow throughout her, and decided to speak-up after a while of uncomfortable silence amongst one-another while the others chatted away.

iindent“i’m sorry, ternwhisker.” she murmured, earning the cat’s attention almost immediately. “sometimes starclan goes against one’s dream, but i do wish it hadn’t been yours.”

iindentthe black and white she-cat paused a moment before letting out a scoff, followed by a grunt and a shake of her head. “don’t pity me, ashenstep,” she hissed, tail lashing as her slitted-eyes met the other’s, then flooding with shock. “i never took you for a liar, you know, but i can cleary see i was wrong.”

iindentand that was it, the end of their conversation. ternwhisker was so shocked and angered by the cat’s words that she left her side and joined martinfang, her mate, while the padded along on patrol, tail flicking in annoyance. ternwhisker’s gaze returned to just the way it once was, unwavering, staring straight onward.

iindentas the sun was setting its final streak over the horizon, the patrol had just turned its course around and began their way back to camp. first they would round the edge of the border, then take a separate trail, known as the deer-path trail. not a single cat dared to turn and converse with the brooding she-cat still at its rear, sensing the aura she gave-off and deciding to keep their distance. ternwhisker had rarely shifted her eyes from the dirt underpaw or the trail straight ahead, but just this once, along the entire patrol, she glanced into the trees—and behind a large boulder, she spotted a flash of white and orange fur, complemented by the last of sunlight peeking in through the trees. without a word to her clan-mates, she cautiously directed her path to the boulder, and as she slunk around its curve, she spotted a smaller, apprentice-aged feline with a pelt of white and orange. a gasp pulled from between her lips, her eyes softening as she scanned the scrawny cat.

iindent“hey,” she began, softly, lowering her head to eye-level with the other. “and who are you?” she began with a smile. the cat seemed to be quivering, its paws shifting uncomfortably, yet they kept their stare and straightened posture. “laurelpaw.” it replied, even softer than her own voice had been.

iindent“well, laurelpaw, what are you doing here all alone?” she quipped, taking a few steps onward from behind the boulder, just to reveal the rest of herself. “i’ve been alone for a moon, i think.” they responded once more. “an apprentice, all alone?” ternwhisker sighed. “you must be hungry, lonely.”

iindentthe apprentice did nothing more than nod their head, bowing it slightly in embarrassment, as though the prospect was something to be ashamed of. but ternwhisker was intent on helping the young female, a smile pulling across her maw. “well, you know, our group has plenty of food back at camp.” she inquired, glancing through the trees as she spotted the cats looking about, worriedly, for her. “we’re on a patrol now, if you want to join us—its a load of fun, trust me.”

iindentlaurelpaw shifted her eyes from the ground to the warrior standing before her, and weakly nodded her head, as if reluctant yet excited by the offer at the same time. “sure, i like to patrol.” she purred, almost inaudibly, causing the black and white she-cat to strain her ears in order to hear. “alright, come on then.”

iindentonce the warrior and her new companion joined with the others, they all gave the pair strange looks, yet simply nodded their heads and continued onwards on their patrol. ashenstep, watching her with amazement, seemed shocked to see the she-cat act so differently from the brooding mess she had been before, all hissing and spitting. but ternwhisker caught her gaze when she hadn’t realized, and gave her a pointed look, which gave her enough of a hint to turn away and not look back once more.

iindent“isn’t this fun?” ternwhisker chuckled to the apprentice, earning a bubbly giggle.
