Name meaning/inspiration: Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire, dancing, volcanoes, lightning, wind and violence, although she is most known for the fire and volcano titles. Her poetic name "Ka wahine `ai honua" means the woman who devours the land. She is seen as destroyer but also as a creator. I choose this name because I have visited the lava fields of O'ahu, and her coat strikingly resembles the hardened lava, which there of are many textures that can happen, like the smooth, rippling wave like patterns that appear, or the cracked patterns that also happen with the crunched up lava you walk over. Her eyes remind me of the magnificence of where the creation of land happens, on the edge of the ocean. They are the perfect color to resemble the lava spilling into the ocean, and her mane and tail remind me of the steam that is a reaction to this process.
