The Oekaki now works on Google Chrome!

Postby Nick » Thu Apr 07, 2016 12:37 pm

Our old Oekaki tool called "ChibiPaint" uses Java. Recently, some browsers have been dropping support for Java, so unfortunately the Oekaki stopped working on Google Chrome.

I've now rewritten the Oekaki so that it no longer needs Java to be installed, and I've called that new version "ChickenPaint" :). This means that you can now draw in the Oekaki using the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge web browsers if you want to!

I'll be adding some new drawing tools and other improvements to ChickenPaint too. To start with, I've added a new gradient tool that I hope you'll find useful:

Image

If you're using Chrome or Edge, ChickenPaint will be used automatically when you go to draw. If you're not using Chrome, you can opt in to using ChickenPaint from your Oekaki settings page instead. Note that it doesn't work on Internet Explorer 9 or older, and performance is a little slow on older computers (use the old Java ChibiPaint instead in these situations, which will continue to be available).

Tablet pressure for drawing is not currently supported in Chrome or Firefox, but this will be coming soon (Chrome is working on adding support right now, and Firefox just has one more bug to fix). Go to the "Help->Tablet Support" menu in ChickenPaint to check your browser for support.

Yay! I've been hoping for this for a long time, as I use a chromebook, but never expected it to actually happen!

Thank you! I do think that the tools are a bit hard to use, since I'm used to using Oekaki in Internet Explorer. I like when you scroll the rolly thing on your mouse and the page zooms in and Chicken Paint doesn't have it.

This is amazing Nick! I know this will help out so many amazing artists who couldn't have access to the Oekaki previously!

Thank you Nick! I'll probably wait to use it until tablet support comes out, but this is a great help! Now we just need a freeform selection tool and resize selection tool and i'll be all set for drawing on here again x3
