You could test out your current thermometer(if it's like glass one, and not the sticker type) by putting it in the frigde or dipping it in warm/hot water for bit and see if it changes. ;)

I got Eheim/Jäger brand heater, it's 100W and said to be good for 100-150 liter tanks. And my tank is 128l and holds average temp of 25,5C, with heater only set to 21,5C(and it's not on most of the time, though usually it kicks in at evening/night). I've also read if you need to heat up the water much higher(I can't remember how much higher...) than the room temp, you might need a heater that has little more power than usual. So yes, sometimes higher powered is better. ^^

I've seen similar injuries on few of the fish(ottos) I've had that have died, both were okay when I had last seen them alive. But when I found them dead one had tail missing and other had been nibbled little on it's side... So I'm guessing when they died other fish came and see if they are edible... :? So maybe that's what's going on with your fish as well? Which would be great in sense if the injuries happened after death it's not the betta bullying them and causing them stress, which leads them to dying...

I got this plant called Limnophila sessiflora, that my tetras seem to favor the most. It doesn't need ton of light and grows like a weed with right conditions(said to be good beginner plant as well), so at worst I've had to trim it down once a week.(though now it's not doing so great, and I'm not sure why...) My tetras also like to hide behind the large tree I got in the tank. Well, they generally like to spend time at the back wall, so they are almost always out of sight. So ornaments work as well I'd think.
_____________
What I find my tetras doing when I come home after 10pm, if I've forgotten the other light on... Little buggers seem to know when I'm not around and swim around so prettily at the front, but when I'm home I hardly see them... -_-
And I'm giving another shot on growing baby corries, this time small amount and all from same spawn... I got 8 fry now(out of 9 eggs, so not bad hatching rate), all hatched couple days ago. One of them hasn't looked as strong as the others from the start, so I might be down to 7 soon.
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

I've had my fish tank for nearly three weeks now, and I've noticed one of my neon tetra have been acting different. He's been cooped up in the barrels I have for a long time. I moved the barrels, and he moved out of them, but went back in pretty soon. I have pictures below if it helps. I'm if something is wrong or not.

My dad has also been worried about this rainbow 'film' on the top of the water. If I stick the tip of my fingernail in the water, the film retreats, but it stops when I take my finger out. My dad is just unsure whether its a bad thing or not.

He's also wondering if I should get a snail/sucker fish to help keep the tank clean. Would this be a good idea? If so, what should I get?

Torterra - is the tank cycled? Is the filter or any thing in the tank new? Are you having algae problems? The rainbow film sounds like there is an oily pollutant in the water to me, but that's just my guess. Knowing more about the tank would help.

Well, when I transferred the fish, they were added with the water from the bag.

I have a good filter, but I'm not sure what cycling means...?

I was wondering if someone could help me with this. ^^ In March, my little 4 year old sister wanted a fish. I tried to talk her out of it but she started screaming, and of course since she's 4, my mom let her get a fish. {which I have to take care of since no one else will} She chose a pair of pink Glofish{which if I remember correctly, are in the tetra family} of which she named Goldie and Trixie. x3 Trixie was fatter than Goldie so that's how we told them apart an i'm assuming that means she /might/ have been female since I read somewhere that the females are larger than the males. We were going to get more than two but they were $4 a piece and my mom was not going to pay that much for 5-6 fish. Anyways, about two months ago, Trixie past away and while Goldie still acts fine and healthy, I wanted to get a couple more Glofish to keep him company. I was just kind of worried though that they might fight. Goldie and Trixie were in the same tank already when we first got them so they were already familiar with each other. I do have an extra tank though if I did get some more and they do fight. So, does anyone think it would be fine to get more and just monitor them closely or that it would be best to just leave Goldie by himself? Thanks in advance. c:

Since Glofish (genetically modified Zebra Danios, it'd be much cheaper to just buy some of those) are schooling fish the one you have will probably do loads better if you get him a nice big group to swim around with c: They're very unlikely to fight since they're peaceful fish, at most they might nip at each other a bit but that's all normal. They tend to get more stressed and nippy when they're in smaller groups rather than larger ones.

Ugh. There was this huge fish that was about a foot and a half in length + 12 foot long fish + 7 6ish inch fish in this really thin tank. It was so over stocked it was painful to watch the huge fish try and turn around in the tank. There was so much Decor there was hardly enough room for the fish. x.x

zebra danios have marital issues...but we love them anyways(I had four of them in a tank with 6 young goldfish...oddly enough they were all happy together with no nipping and such, probably because they live in the same range in the wild.

I have an update on my dwarf hairgrass and some more detailed pictures of my planted tank. (:

Here is the dwarf hairgrass some time later. It has not died and seems to be doing quite well. X
So well that it's starting to throw out little shoots, which I'm incredibly happy about. X

The java fern has also been growing tiny babies all over it, and the narrow leaf version is starting to bud with one little plant as well. X

Here's a picture of all six of the rasboras together for feeding time. You can also see the amazon sword which is doing fantastic. It reaches from the bottom to the top of the tank and is the brightest, most vivid shade of green. I love it, but they're so finicky. Ugh.
