Breeding[edit]
Black Caviar was born on 18 August 2006 at 5.20 am at Gilgai Farm in Nagambie, Victoria. She grew up on the Goulburn River property and then went to Swettenham Stud in December 2007 for a 10-week yearling preparation where she was then sold on behalf of Rick Jamieson to Peter Moody for $210,000 at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.[6] She is owned by G. J. Wilkie, K. J. Wilkie, Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, C. H. Madden, J. Madden, P. A. Hawkes, D. M. Taylor and J. Taylor. She was sired by Bel Esprit, winner of the Doomben 10,000, which also sired Bel Mer, a mare that won the Robert Sangster Stakes in 2009.[7] Black Caviar was the first foal of her unraced dam Helsinge, a daughter of the British racehorse Desert Sun,[8] that never won a major race but was placed in the Craven Stakes and the Sandown Mile.[9] Desert Sun also sired the champion New Zealand racemare, Sunline.[10] Helsinge is also the dam of All Too Hard, winner of the 2013 All Aged Stakes, the 2013 Futurity Stakes, the 2013 C F Orr Stakes, the 2012 Caulfield Guineas and runner-up in the 2012 Cox Plate. As a descendant of the British broodmare Pinprick, Black Caviar is a product of the same branch of Thoroughbred family 1-p, which also produced the Classic winners Ambiguity and Sodium.[11]
Black Caviar weighs about 570 kg and stands 16.2 hands (168 cm) high.[12] Horses foaled in Australia have their official "birthdays" on 1 August, whereas in the Northern Hemisphere, horses have their ages advanced by one year on 1 January. This anomaly led to Black Caviar being officially described as a six-year-old when she ran in England in June 2012, although she was still a five-year-old by Southern Hemisphere reckoning.
Timeform rating[edit]
On 31 March 2011 Black Caviar was rated one of the top Thoroughbred racehorses in the world (with a 136 rating) for the first quarter of 2011 by Timeform.[13][14] On 17 April 2013 she was once again ranked on top of the international thoroughbred rankings with a timeform rating of 136.[15] On 3 May 2013 Black Caviar was officially listed as the world's best horse for the period between November 1, 2012 and April 28, 2013[16] by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities ( IFHA) who compile the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings. Overall Black Caviar is rated as the equal 76th best flat racing horse in Timeform's limited history and the equal highest Timeform rated filly or mare, 11 lbs lower than Timeform's highest rated horse Frankel (147).[17] It has to be added that Timeform has been rating flat racing thoroughbreds in Britain only since its founding in 1948, thoroughbreds beyond Britain only "more recently"[18] and horses who have raced exclusively in America only since approximately 2000.[19] This is a relatively small slice of thoroughbred racing history in terms of time and geography and within this limited scope Timeform rates seven sprinters above Black Caviar.[20]
Racing career[edit]
2008–2009: two-year-old season[edit]
Black Caviar started twice as a two-year-old, winning her debut by 5 lengths before claiming the listed Blue Sapphire Stakes by 6 lengths.[21]
2009–2010: three-year-old season[edit]
Returning as a three-year-old, she won first-up in a listed race by 4 lengths. Stepping up to Group 2 level in the Danehill Stakes at Flemington, she caused concern when she stumbled at the start; however, she recovered to keep her winning run going, beating the colt Wanted, by ¾ of a length. Moody, commenting on the mishap in the early stages said "I certainly had my heart in my mouth".[22] A chest muscle injury sustained in the start[23] kept her out of racing until the following January. That resuming run saw her take on the older horses in the Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley, where she won by 2½ lengths. Shortly after the race, the filly sustained an injury to a suspensory ligament in the her right foreleg[24] which kept her out for the rest of the season.
2010–2011: four-year-old season[edit]
Returning as a four-year-old in October 2010, Black Caviar won two more Group 2 races: the Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield and the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley by 5½ lengths. She then was set for her first Group 1 race in the Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington, where she took on a field that included the highly rated West Australian sprinter Hay List, along with multiple Group 1 winners Star Witness, Melito and All Silent. Black Caviar produced what was described as "an astonishing demolition job" and won by 4 lengths. After the race, the veteran trainer Lee Freedman, who had conditioned outstanding sprinters including Miss Andretti described Black Caviar as "the best I have seen".[25]
She resumed in February 2011 in the Lightning Stakes, where she defeated Hay List by 3½ lengths, being eased down well short of the winning post. Her next start saw her carry topweight of 58 kg in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. Despite the weight, she again won in similar ease to her previous Group 1 wins and set a race record in the process. This performance earned her a rating of 130 from the IFHA, which made her the number one ranked horse in the world in the period of October 2010 – March 2011.[26] The rating placed her only three pounds behind Dayjur, the highest rated sprinter of the previous 30 years.[27] A fourth successive Group 1 win came in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley before she ventured to Randwick in Sydney for the T J Smith Stakes. In this race, which attracted a crowd of 30,000, Hay List established a clear break on the field at the top of the straight and a huge upset briefly appeared possible. Black Caviar, however, accelerated past Hay List in the closing stages and won in very impressive style by 3 lengths. The Herald Sun described her performance as "brilliant, dominant and unforgettable".[28]
She then travelled to Brisbane for the BTC Cup at Doomben, where she attracted a crowd of over 20,000, for another clash with Hay List. She won by 2 lengths over Hay List, which once again ran a clear second placing and confirmed his standing as Black Caviar's main rival.[29] Buffering was a further 5 lengths away in third place. Black Caviar was expected to end her season in the Doomben 10,000; however, her connections instead decided to spell her until the Australian spring.[30]
In the annual Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Awards, members of the racing media voted Black Caviar as Horse of the Year by 150 votes to 134 over So You Think.[31]
2011–2012: five-year-old season[edit]
Black Caviar started her five-year-old season by winning her second Schillaci Stakes by 4¼ lengths. With this victory, she equalled Phar Lap's record of 14 straight wins.[32] She won her 15th race in the Moir Stakes by a 6-length margin. She maintained her unbeaten record with win number 16 in the Patinack Farm Classic by 2.8 lengths from Buffering and Mid Summer Music. After the Patinack Farm Classic, Black Caviar was spelled for the remainder of the spring racing season.
She returned to racing by winning the 1200-metre Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on 27 January 2012 by 4.3 lengths in a time of 1.09.44 to remain undefeated over 17 starts. She then stepped up to 1400 metres for the first time on 11 February in the C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield. The distance and wet track conditions led to media speculation that her unbeaten run was under threat,[33] but she again won comfortably by 3.3 lengths in front of a crowd of 20,000.[34]
Black Caviar backed up a week later in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes on 18 February over 1000 metres, where she was once again pitted against Hay List. She was challenged up until the 200m mark, then extended away to win by nearly 2 lengths.[35] The win put her equal with American horse Peppers Pride with 19 wins from 19 starts and behind only Kincsem, which won all 54 of her races. She also equalled the long-standing Australasian record of successive wins jointly held by Desert Gold and Gloaming.
On 28 April 2012, she won the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes by 4½ lengths at Morphettville and in the process set a new Australasian record of 20 straight wins from 20 starts. The win also took her past the then-unbeaten run of the American mare Zenyatta. Moody commented on her record-breaking run by saying that "Luke was pretty kind to her, he gave her one little smack on the bum and she did the rest."[36] Black Caviar returned to Morphettville two weeks later, winning the Goodwood Handicap by 1 length without being ridden out.
In June, she was sent overseas for the first time for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. On the 30-hour flight from Australia to England, she wore a specially designed "compression suit" which helped blood circulation.[37] The race on 23 June attracted a crowd of 80,000 to Ascot and was broadcast live in Australia, where crowds watched the event on a big screen in Melbourne's Federation Square.[38] Racing over a straight six furlongs on rain-softened turf, Black Caviar won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes by a head from the French-trained filly Moonlight Cloud, with Restiadargent a neck away in third.[39] Nolen sent the mare past the Frankie Dettori-ridden Soul inside the last quarter mile[40] but after establishing a clear lead, he began to ease Black Caviar. Moonlight Cloud moved up on the stands side to draw almost level before Nolen began driving Black Caviar again in the final strides.[41] Nolen said that his over-confidence had been a factor in the closeness of the finish: "It was an error that every apprentice is taught not to do, and I got away with it today."[42] It was discovered during after-race X-rays that Black Caviar had sustained an eight-centimetre muscle tear somewhere in the race. Nolen felt the change in the horse and said he 'thought she'd done enough to get home. I didn't want to annoy her any more.' Moody explained the mare had not coped with the 11,000-mile journey as well as he had hoped or expected. He also described her as appearing "tired and worn out" after the race.[43] Based on Black Caviar's 22 victories, Timeform rated the Diamond Jubilee as her third lowest performance(116).[citation needed] However, an examination by veterinarian Peter Angus and chiropractor Michael Bryant later revealed that Black Caviar sustained a grade-four tear of the quadriceps and a grade-two tear of the sacroiliac during the race.[44] It was announced that Black Caviar would return to Australia to recover and bypass the originally intended second stage of her international challenge in the July Cup. On 26 June, Moody explained that Black Caviar was expected to recover from her injuries and that, after an extended break, she would be prepared for a third Patinack Farm Classic.[45] On 31 July connections decided Black Caviar would not race during the spring carnival.[46]
In November 2012, Black Caviar was named European Champion Sprinter at the Cartier Racing Awards,[47] becoming the first horse trained outside Europe to be so honoured.
2012–2013: six-year-old season[edit]
In February 2013 Black Caviar stretched her unbeaten run to 23 by winning the Lightning Stakes, breaking the course record which had stood for 25 years. It was the third time she had won the event.[48] On 21 February 2013 Black Caviar was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. This was only the second time an active competitor has been so honoured.[49]
In March Black Caviar made it 24 wins from 24 starts by winning the William Reid Stakes by 4 lengths. It was her 14th Group 1 win, equalling the record of Kingston Town.[50]
On 13 April 2013 Black Caviar won the 2013 T J Smith Stakes. It was the mare's 25th consecutive win and 15th group 1 win, breaking the Australian record for the most group 1 wins by a horse. The record was previously held by Kingston Town with 14.[51] Interestingly, the Australian Racing Museum and Hall of Fame website says Wenona Girl, who raced in Australia before the current Group system was introduced, won 15 races now classified as Group 1.[52] On 17 April 2013 she was once again ranked on top of the international thoroughbred rankings with a timeform rating of 136.[15]
Retirement[edit]
On 17 April 2013, it was announced that Black Caviar was officially retired from racing. Trainer Peter Moody sadly said, "The connections of the horse and I decided 25 was a great number and she did us proud on Saturday."[53] Shortly after, a life-sized brass statue of the champion mare was unveiled in the town of Nagambie. On 24 October 2013, breeder Rick Jamieson announced that Black Caviar is in foal to Exceed and Excel.[54][55]

Zenyatta (foaled April 1, 2004, in Kentucky) is a retired American champion Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of 19 consecutive races in a 20-race career. During her racing career, she stood 17.2 hands (70 inches, 178 cm) at the withers and weighed 1,217 lb (552 kg).
Owned by Jerry Moss and his wife Ann and trained by John Shirreffs, Zenyatta was ridden by jockey Mike Smith for 17 of 20 starts. David Flores rode Zenyatta in her first three starts.
Zenyatta was sired by Street Cry, who also sired 2007 Kentucky Derby-winner Street Sense, multiple Group 1 Australian Weight for Age champion Whobegotyou, and 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking. Zenyatta is out of Vertigineux, and thus is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Balance. Her damsire is the stallion Kris S.
Zenyatta was named after the album Zenyatta Mondatta, by The Police, who were signed to A&M Records by her owner, Jerry Moss.[2]

Popularity[edit]
Zenyatta was selected three years in a row (2008–2010) for NTRA's Moment of the Year Award, for her 2008 Ladies' Classic victory, historic 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic victory, and narrow defeat in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic.[3] She finished second in the voting for AP Female Athlete of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.[4] She was featured in O[5] and W Magazine[6] and in a profile on 60 Minutes[7] in 2010 prior to her historic attempt at 20 consecutive victories in the 2010 Breeders Cup Classic. In a public opinion poll by the Daily Racing Form, 87% of people voted for her to be the 2010 Eclipse Horse of the Year.[8] Thousands appeared for her retirement ceremonies at Hollywood Park[9] and Keeneland Race Track[10] despite frigid 18-degree temperatures at Keeneland.
Racing overview[edit]

She was ridden by Mike Smith for the first time, a partnership that would continue for the last 17 races of her career. She paid $5.60 to win, $3.60 to place, and $2.20 to show.[14] Zenyatta went on to win the Grade 2 Milady Handicap and the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park.[15][16] She then set a track record of 1:41.48 for 1 1/16 miles and won the Grade 2 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar.[17]
On September 27, 2008, Zenyatta won the Grade 1 Lady's Secret Stakes at Santa Anita Park. She clocked negative splits throughout the race, running each quarter faster than the one before it. Her splits were :24 4/5, :23 4/5, :23 1/5, :22 3/5, and a final sixteenth in :06 flat. She finished the 1 1/16 miles in a stakes-record 1:40.30 and established herself as the heavy favorite for the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in October.[18]
On October 24, 2008, Zenyatta was sent off as the 1–2 favorite for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park. Zenyatta circled the field at the top of the stretch and won easily, capping an undefeated season and making a case for herself as Horse of the Year. Her Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic was the second-fastest in Breeders Cup history at 1:46.85 for 1⅛ miles. She posted a 1½-length victory over Cocoa Beach.[19]
2009 season[edit]
Zenyatta won the Eclipse Award for top Older Female of the 2008 season. She was voted runner-up to 2008 American Horse of the Year Curlin.
On May 23, 2009, Zenyatta won the Grade 2 Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park. She carried 126 lbs and defeated stablemate and Grade I winner Life Is Sweet, finishing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.30 and winning by 1¾ lengths.[20]
On June 27, 2009, Zenyatta won the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park for the second straight year. She carried 129 lbs, spotting her rivals from 13 to 18 pounds, and became the first horse to win under such a weight assignment since 1977. She won by 2½ lengths with a final time of 1:48.15 at the 1⅛ mile distance. In 2008, she won the Vanity under 126 pounds.[21]
On August 9, 2009, Zenyatta overcame a strong aversion to the Del Mar track surface, which she had been reluctant to even train over, and won the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Handicap at Del Mar. With a furlong left to run, she had four lengths to make up and closed to win by a head over Anabaa's Creation. She finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.24.[22]
On October 10, 2009, Zenyatta won the Lady's Secret at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park with ease, and on October 28, 2009, it was announced that she would compete in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.[23]
On November 7, 2009, Zenyatta became the first female to win the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.[24] She carried 124 lbs and won by 1 length over Gio Ponti. She earned $2,700,000 of the $5,000,000 purse. She became the first horse to win two different Breeders' Cup races, improving her winning record to 14 of 14.[25] The field of 12 horses over which she triumphed included 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, 2009 Belmont Stakes, [[Travers Stakes],] and Jockey Club Gold Cup hero Summer Bird, European Group 1 winners Twice Over and Rip Van Winkle, and Pacific Classic winner Richard's Kid. 2010 season[edit]
On January 16, 2010, it was announced that Zenyatta would not be retired and would race during the 2010 season.[27] On January 18, she won the Eclipse Award for top Older Female of the 2009 season. She was voted runner-up to 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra.[28]
On March 13, 2010, Zenyatta captured her 15th straight victory in the Grade 1 $250,000 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap at Santa Anita Park. She was assigned 127 lbs and spotted her seven rivals 11 to 16 pounds. She wove through traffic mid-stretch to get clear and won under a hand ride, eased before the wire. She completed the 1⅛ miles in 1:48.20 and won by 1¼ lengths.[29]
Early in 2010, it was announced that Zenyatta would meet Rachel Alexandra, that had not raced since winning the Woodward on September 2009, on the track in the Apple Blossom Invitational on April 9 at Oaklawn Park. The Apple Blossom Handicap was changed to an invitational for the renewal of the race. There was also talk of a series of three races over the 2010 racing season in which Zenyatta and Rachel would meet. However, following Rachel Alexandra's loss in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course on March 13, it was announced that she would not run in the Apple Blossom Invitational.
On April 9, 2010, Zenyatta romped in the Grade I $500,000 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park and increased her undefeated record to 16–0. With the win, Zenyatta tied Cigar, Citation, Ormonde, and Ribot for consecutive victories without a loss. She completed the 1⅛ miles in 1:50.71.[30]

With the victory, Zenyatta tied the world record set by Rock of Gibraltar for consecutive Grade/Group I victories. She earned $150,000 of the $250,000 purse and paid $3.00 to win, $2.10 to place. There was no show wagering.[31]
On August 7, 2010, Zenyatta broke the world record set by Rock of Gibraltar for consecutive Grade/Group I victories. She won her eighth consecutive Grade I victory and increased her undefeated record to 18–0. Zenyatta carried 123 lb and won her third Clement L. Hirsch Handicap. She was ridden by Mike Smith and finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.03, winning by a neck. Zenyatta's 18th win tied Eclipse for consecutive victories without a defeat. With the win, Zenyatta captured her 12th Grade I race and tied the All-time North American record (set by two-time champion Bayakoa) for Grade I victories by a filly/mare.[32]
On October 2, 2010, Zenyatta broke the North American record for Grade I victories by a filly/mare with her 13th Grade I win, which came at Oak Tree at Hollywood Park. She won her 9th consecutive Grade I victory and ran her unbeaten streak to 19–0 . In addition, she broke the all-time North American female earnings record (formerly held by Ouija Board, which retired in 2006 with earnings in excess of $6,312,552). Zenyatta (carrying 123 lb) won her third Lady's Secret Stakes by a half-length over Grade I winner Switch. She finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.97 and increased her career earnings to $6,404,580.[33]
On November 6, 2010 Zenyatta attempted to become the first North American horse to retire undefeated with 20 wins and the second horse to repeat in the Grade 1 1¼ mile Breeders' Cup Classic. She fell behind the leader by at least 18 lengths in the early going at Churchill Downs, but rallied in the stretch to close in on Stephen Foster Handicap and Whitney Handicap winner Blame. Zenyatta fell inches short and lost by a short head. Other horses in the Breeders' Cup Classic included Preakness and Haskell Invitational winner Lookin at Lucky; Quality Road, dominant winner of the Florida Derby, Metropolitan Handicap, Donn Handicap, and Woodward Stakes; Japanese shipper Espoir City, winner of the 2009 Japan Cup Dirt; and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Haynesfield. With her second-place earnings of $900,000,[34] Zenyatta surpassed Tiznow, John Henry, and Alysheba in all-time North American earnings (male or female) with earnings in excess of $7,304,580. She also broke the all-time Breeders Cup earnings record (previously held by American Horse of the Year and two-time Breeders Cup Classic champion Tiznow). On March 23, 2011, Zenyatta became the first horse to win the William H. May Award. The award honors an individual or group that has provided "meritorious service" to the industry. Past recipients include racing industry greats such as John R.
