▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ▬ - ♔
It had been precisely one week since the war against the Goddess Gaea was meticulously won by Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter. Reyna traipsed across the remnants of New Rome, staring longingly at a particular coffee shop that had crumbled into ruins. Pillars of heavy dust blanketed her sandals.
"Well, there goes one of my only plausible resources for energy." Chimed a voice, not far behind her.
Reyna whirled around to take in the sight of a sadder and wiser looking Nico di Angelo. His weary eyes swept over the daughter of Bellona, seeing that her face was tense and her long, dark, luxuriously thick hair was pulled back into a stiff braid. Both of the teenagers were more than exhausted, but it wasn't like they could exert any effort in trying to find a stronger word. "Tell me about it." She mumbled, shoving aside a small rock with her toe as she assessed the damage.
"It's not easy being praetor, is it, Reyna?" Nico inquired.
Reyna felt a strong urge to nod, as if something was tempting her to go off on a rant about her seemingly never-ending struggles. Her history, save for the bits and fragments of moments with Jason and times when being a leader brought her great respect and power, was pretty much empty of happiness and relaxation. She could rarely remember the old days where she resided at Circe's spa, her sister Hylla at her side. That was a time when the world seemed at peace with her. Even now, at the break of a victorious dawn, there was work to be done. New Rome was undergoing major innovations after the attacks, and Reyna had taken her familiar role as the go-to-girl for rebuilding assignments and plans. She had a checklist in her head, yet she carefully shoved it aside for one second to reply to Nico. She hoped she wouldn't lose track of the list in doing so.
"No, Nico, it isn't. You must be a genius for figuring that one out." The sarcasm in her voice was a mix of annoyance and sympathy. No matter how drained she was, she wouldn't take that frustration out on Nico. Despite him having tasted both sides of the Titan War and the Earth War, Reyna knew he had only been looking for information in order to decide which side offered to assist the greater good. Without him, the Legion, along with the Greek campers, would have never located the Doors of Death and closed them.
He's been through an astounding amount of pain and heartbreak... Reyna suddenly thought. Whether you classified Nico as a hero or a villain, you had to admit that the boy was troubled. His face shadowed previous visions of Tartarus and everyone knows that nobody leaves such a ghastly place unscathed. "You've probably been through a lot more than I have, though...when you..." She didn't have to continue, as she saw comprehension mirrored in the look Nico gave her next. He tried to conceal it, as he didn't see himself as a young boy anymore and really shouldn't have to, but Reyna could pinpoint a spark of fear and remembrance in his expression that was similar to a child.
"Pretty much." Nico said shortly, obviously seeming uncomfortable approaching that topic at first. But then his mouth quirked up in a sad grin. "It's been crazy for all of us...especially you and I. We need a break...you need a break."
There's no time for breaks! What are you talking about?! Reyna panicked inwardly, but gave a curt nod of her head. And then she was caught off guard by a sudden glint in Nico's eyes that lightened the irises. "We should do something fun." He announced, the sudden idea recharging him. Reyna could feel herself stepping back and almost tripping over a cluster of bricks. Her own dark eyes widened. "Fun?" She spoke the word as if it were a foreign country she'd never been to.
"Yeah...you know...fun. Browse some of the repaired shops, stroll the gardens...as long as there aren't any pomegranates growing." Nico emphasized, and that pulled a small chuckle out of Reyna's mouth. It became clear to her that Nico wouldn't let this go easily, and she didn't want to disappoint him. She carefully stepped towards him and took his hand.
"That'd be a plus, wouldn't it? Alright...let's hurry."
