Rain hurtled through the sky, pelting against dirt, stone and fur. A yawning chasm loomed beyond the conflict, thunder echoing as it tumbled in.
Claws and teeth connected with flesh. The black cat yowled in pain, pulling itself away from its aggressor. Its fur bristled and it hissed, staring down the opposing feline. Eyes locked. Blood swirled through cold water.
"I can't let you any nearer to the camp." The voice of the cream tabby was fierce, but controlled.
The black cat took a step forward, rain dripping from its paw.
"Don't come any closer!"
"I don't take orders from stuck-up queens." The black cat spat.
There was a pause. Eyes narrowed. Then it lunged.
The cream tabby twisted and rolled as the shadowy cat leapt, her pale back paws slamming against its dark underside.
Thunder boomed as the cat fell, its fur becoming indistinguishable from the darkness beyond the cliff.

"WOA!" Three kittens sat at the entrance of the old den, their mouths open, fur puffed, and eyes wide. "You really did that?"
The she-cat smiled. Since that day, her fur had thinned, her body weakened, and her senses dulled. But she was still prepared to defend her family.

The golden tom turned his head.
"Dolphinsplash."
Penguinspark eyed the tom, and then the river next to them.
"Fight me."
Penguinspark grinned at Dolphinsplash's request before stepping forward to the river shore.
"Alright, here down to the hunting grounds. First there wins."
Dolphinsplash nodded, stepping up to the other side of his cream colored friend. Penguinspark turned his head, locking eyes with the other male before nodding. Dolphinsplash gave a quick solemn nod in return before getting into his position, Penguinspark following.
"GO"
With the shouting word, both cats pounced into the water before finding the current. Penguinspark swished his fluffy tail, swerving into Dolphinsplash and knocking him into the riverbank. Dolphinsplash scowled as he pushed through the water to catch up, curving around the golden tom with a swift movement. Penguinspark saw the ending point, and he saw Dolphinsplash paddling faster towards the finish. Penguinspark ducked back under to move forward faster, hoping to beat his companion.
He closed his eyes and pushed forward, but it wasn't enough. He was stopped he sighed, raising up in defeat.
"You won again, Dolphin! Good fight, like always!" He smiled.
Maybe someday he'd be able to defeat his friend. Just Maybe.

Two front paws connected with a strong jaw, causing the she-cat's opponent to let out a surprised grunt as his head jerked backwards. Without hesitating the she-cat shot out from underneath the tom, and made a desperate run for the object that was led on the ground not too far away.

The sound of heavy paw steps behind her, caused Fernlight to make a quick leap towards the small branch. Her face nearly colliding with the ground as her jaws clamped tightly around the branch as she eased her body into a roll. Just in time catch her opponent lunging towards her.

without another minute to spare, the long haired she-cat lifted up her back legs to connect with the tom's stomach and pushed upwards. Once more catching Pikefang off guard as she used his own momentum against him. Causing the tom to go flying overhead and crashing into the ground.

Quickly, the cream coloured she-cat wasted no time in rushing to his position and pinning him down. Head tilted and branch pointed at his throat.

Meanwhile, a voice somewhere above them announced who the winner was. Thus, ending the sparring match.

" Fernlight wins! Better luck next time, brother!"

A shadow emerged from the undergrowth, flying out to tackle her down, but she was prepared. Ducking, she spun on her feet to face her attacker.

“It’s over, Aspenstar,” Lichen spat, claws grazing the earth. Lichen, leader of the evil rogues. Such ferocity in a small creature. Her sister.

They stared at each other, their gazes taunting and daring - ‘Come and try’. The final duel had arrived, and they both knew it. Their dance of death was ending. Only one sister would reign supreme.

Thunder rolled across the distant hills, the noise filling Aspenstar with dread. They ran at one another, the distance between them infinitely far yet closer than a newborn kit to its mother’s belly. Her heartbeat drummed in her ears, a constant beat that both reassured and unsettled her. They were close now. Claws unsheathed, they both leapt forwards, ready to finally end this feud –

“ASPENPAW! LICHENPAW! Go tend to the Elders before I cuff your ears!”

Skidding to a halt, both apprentices turned with horror to face Grizzlestripe, Aspenpaw’s stern-gazed mentor. They tiptoed away, smiling sheepishly – there was no arguing with Grizzlestripe. They’d just have to continue their favourite kithood pastime another rainy day.
