- She steadied her stance as the dizziness dissipated. It’d been a long jump. At least it’d worked. She could still go for a few more.
She stared down the barrel of a loaded gun, but the weapon didn’t concern her as much as the startling sense of familiarity that struck her as she met those concentrated green eyes. A familiarity she hadn’t noticed before, but now couldn’t seem to shake. Her eyebrows quirked up and she raised her chin defiantly, almost daring the woman to pull the trigger as she dragged her gaze around the room. A quick catalogue of her surroundings to memorise the interior and the invisible curves of the world she could jump through.
Her attention returned to the weapon pointed at her face. Her own words had been twisted so expertly and so calmly. No surprises there – the woman was a government worker. She wanted a name to that face in front of her. She wasn’t about to ask for it, but the curiosity had risen inside her.
“I’m merely pointing out that the massacre down there is not on us. We didn't shoot wildly into the crowd.”
Neither sides were guilty of collateral. It was a price of war to pay, and she'd had to pay it, too. She laughed bitterly, throwing her hands up as she spun around. “Look at me. No weapon, no backup. Not fighting behind anyone. Just me and you.”
I never fight behind anyone. Don't suppose you'd know what that feels like, sniper.
She dropped her hands back to her side.
“You tried to arrest me for existing. Do you even know my name? I doubt it. I don’t know yours. I don’t know your experiences and you don’t know mine. I don’t know if you’re powered like me or if you’re just a human. It shouldn’t matter. It does matter – but only because your people made it matter.”
She took a calculated step forward, gaze on that finger on the trigger. “The difference between your people and mine – and also civilians, too. Your people will always have a choice.”
Put that gun down or fire that bullet.
I’m not afraid. Are you?
She was tensed to jump.

“They should trust your decisions. You’re adviser for a reason.” Although, he didn’t particularly like the tension between him and Fireflies now. He’d have to sort it out later, because for now he had bigger fish to fry. His brow furrowed with the revelation that they knew nothing. They were operating completely in the dark with no idea of anything going on around them. It wasn’t good odds – but they could roll with it. They were rolling with it. She’d just put her trust in him, and he wasn’t about to let her down. He flashed her a small smile. “I’ve got your six, Jess. Don't worry.”
He was about to say more, but a shift in his peripheral had him glancing away from the adviser. His eyebrows shot upwards as he watched his friend’s attempt to sneak out of the base in the most conspicuous way possible – so conspicuous that it was practically the real life equivalent of a movie character tiptoeing out with a traffic cone on their head. Maybe in the movies that method would actually work. Not here. Banks was clearly not good at stealth work.
“Banks…” he allowed time to slow to a crawl. It was a serious situation, but he was still struggling to hold in laughter. That medic was the last one he’d expect to attempt to disobey orders. Now he was failing to do so in slow motion. “What the heck are you trying to do?”
