Mother was soft, cozy, and warm.
Her fur always smelled of rain.
Mother protected me from harm,
She made sure I felt little pain.

We knew no hunger and no strife.
That was, until the foxes came.
They found Mother and took her life.
and I was lost, never the same.

I was eventually found.
By a cat searching for mullein.
Bravefern saw me hanging around
the vervain, sheltering from rain.

Bravefern is soft, cozy, and warm.
She makes sure I feel little pain.

the heat, the sleep, the re-energized run
a cornered mouse hems and hawks
its existence a pawn through shadowed knocks
of life that a cat decides, what can be done?

the rounded ears, the silken fur,
shiver of whiskers, eyes beaded with tears--
a meal with feelings and lines now blurred.
the cat hides it away despite his fears,
questions how he could let this occur.
is he meant for a life so severe?
the pound catcher decides for this self-saboteur.

But as summer fades autumn will grow near.
Then winter brings snow and frost just to melt.
So why should spring flowers and rain bring fear.
So why struggle with the hand life has dealt.

As summer once again does strike you true,
