ＤＡＹ ＯＮＥ

You see a bespectacled kalon leaning on the rail of the ship, clutching a pamphlet
and looking a little green around the gills. He startles when you come closer,
swaying slightly on his feet as he pushes his ridiculously thick-lensed glasses up
his nose.

"Oh! You startled me! Am I in your way?" He gestures absent-mindedly with the
pamphlet as he speaks, and the words WHALE WATCHING catch your eye.

"Whale watching? Ah, right, you see- I went to the bar for a drink and the
bartender... laughed... and gave me this instead. I can't tell if he was making
fun of me or- no, he was definitely making fun of me." His mouth sets in a
dismayed sort of grimace - though you can't tell if it's from the obvious
seasickness or from the run-in with the bartender.

Probably both.

"Was probably asking for it by taking my copy of Moby Dick up to the bar with me....."

"I suppose looking out at the horizon has been helping with this awful
seasickness, but I haven't seen even a single whale!" He looks back to you,
his glasses glinting (almost sadly) in the sunlight. "Maybe a fresh pair of eyes
would help... would you perhaps be interested in whale watching with me?"

ＤＡＹ ＴＷＯ

After waiting for at least an hour at the cliffs, where you'd
heard Professor Richards had been seen, you see the ruffled-looking
kalon huffing and puffing his way up the hill. It's about time.

"Oh, were you looking for me? I'm so sorry to keep you waiting!"
Today he has a copy of The Old Man and the Sea in one hand, and
the whale watching pamphlet in the other.

"I was reading down by the boardwalk and almost walked right off!
Thankfully that mechanic was there to keep me from going overboard."
He looks a little sheepish. "I've been trying to do what I can to help but,
well, a degree in English only has so many uses, and fixing boats isn't
one of them."

He laughs good-naturedly at himself and pushes up his glasses, which had
slid down on his trek up. "Did you want to have a go at whale watching
again? I think it'd be a nice way to relax a little, and maybe I'll actually
see something this time!"

"Though... I'd hate to do it in silence, why dont you tell me your
favorite book?"

ＤＡＹ ＴＨＲＥＥ

You head up to the cliffs once again to find Monty sitting
cross-legged on the grass, completely immersed in his copy of Twenty
Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

You clear your throat to catch his attention, and he startles, almost
throwing his book over the cliff.

"Oh! Hello there! I didn't hear you coming." He smiles up at you
and pats the grass next to him. "I suppose you're here for some more
whale watching?"

"You know, I feel a bit bad - people keep asking me questions about
the whales, but I hardly know a single thing! I'm an English Professor.
But every time someone asks me about whales they look at me so
hopefully that I panic and make something up. I'm a complete fluke!.
Pun not intended." He ruffles his hair bashfully.

"Do you have any facts about whales I can use?"

Today Monty is laying down on the grass under an umbrella,
Life of Pi held up above him. When you greet him he drops the
book directly on his face.

"Ah!" He moves the book and rubs at his face, "You're so
quiet! I never hear you coming. Or maybe it's my fault for always
having my nose in a book..."

"This is one of my favorites, have you read it?" He holds the book
up for you to see. "Can you imagine being lost at sea in a tiny
boat with a starving tiger? It makes for a good read, at the very least."

Monty adjusts his glasses. "Hm... I think if I had to choose an
animal to be stuck in a boat with, it'd be something cute...
like a capybara or something..."

"Anyways! Before we get started,
why don't you tell me your favorite animal?"

Monty looks flustered as he runs up to meet you at the edge of the cliff, later
than your usual meeting time. Today his reading material seems to be a small
bound copy of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Once he reaches you, he smiles apologetically.

"I'm so sorry! I got caught up talking to that mechanic and completely forgot
about our meeting! We got talking about this poem and unfortunately I have a
tendency to go on and -," he cuts himself off.

"Well. I'll cut my rambling short today, I think you've waited long enough.
Let's get to it!"

Monty looks more tired than usual today, as you jog to your usual meeting
spotbhe takes his glasses off and rubs and his eyes before shoving them back
on haphazardly. His copy of Robinson Crusoe lays untouched next to him.

It looks like you just caught him waking up from a nap.

"How are you doing today?" Monty tries to greet you sunnily,
but it's apparent he's not quite awake yet.

"Sorry, I'm a bit tired today - some of the other passengers were watching
movies all night... and I couldn't just skip out on a Mummy marathon. I used to
be able to quote the whole librarian speech from memory up through college."
He considers for a moment. "Actually, I could probably still do it now..."

"You didn't come here for me to make speeches though, how about we start
on that whale watching?

On the subject of movies though... What's your favorite?"

The professor is lost in thought when you approach him, a slightly
melancholy air hanging over him as you greet each other.

"The repairs are going pretty well now. It shouldn't be long
before we'll be able to set sail."

He doesn't seem particularly happy at the thought,
though you aren't sure why.

Maybe it's best if you keep conversation to a minimum today,
it seems like Monty needs a bit to think about some things.

The professor fans himself with the whale watching pamphlet,
looking a little flustered. You don't get a good look at the book slipping
halfway out of his satchel on the ground - only a glimpse of... is that a
pirate? Swooning???
You decide it's probably better not to ask about it.

"Hello there! How are you doing today?" Monty greets you
brightly and slows his fanning. "Ah, you just missed Carcharodon!
We were having a lovely conversation about.... um.... whales...."

He trails off, and you get the impression that maybe Monty had been
a little distracted by something.

He mutters something to himself - you get the words 'ask out'
and 'coward' before Monty seems to remember himself.

"Anyways! I'm sure you're eager to get to whale watching -
I think this is the last time any of us will have the time to come
up here, what with the ship being so close to fixed."

He still seems a little sad at the thought.

"Oh well, maybe we'll see something really great today!"

The common name of the whale comes from the gray patches and white mottling on its dark skin.
Gray whales were once called devil fish because of their fighting behavior when hunted.
