they call it the flare. scientists had predicted it would happen but not
in this lifetime. however it came sooner than expected. a solar flare so
large erupted from the suns surface that high levels heat and radiation
were able to travel to earth. the flare caused satellites to stop working.
without any satellites technology on earth died immediately. means of
communication and entertainment were lost. this wasn't even the worst
of it. the heat boiled away at riverbeds and the ocean and dried up the
land. crops were destroyed and dry plants easily caught fire. hundreds of
thousands of people died of hunger and thirst. billions died of radiation
exposure. now, in this barren world, the ones left alive must survive in
the aftermath of the flare.

after the flare had hit, satellites in the atmosphere went down. when
signals were lost from the satellites technology lost its use. televisions
turned off, radios quit playing music, phones were unable to send text
messages. that was what the everyday person experienced. with
communication down airplanes lost contact with ground control, global
affairs were unable to be maintained between countries. gps was lost,
which may not seem like such a big deal, however emergency services
needed gps to find their way to accident sites. the tool that helped
many around the world to get from points a to b was lost. the internet
began to become unreliable, growing increasingly slow and hard to use.
then electrical and water companies began to fail. world wide power
outages occurred. street lights and stop light quit working. everything
failed in just a matter of fourteen hours.

the solar flare caused earths temperature to rise dramatically. moisture
was sucked from the earth, causing the ocean to loose water but at the
same time ice caps were melted down into the ocean. the ocean lost
and gained water which caused flooding as well as drought all over.
the heat dried out plants. forests that were once green began to turn
yellow. farms lost valuable crops and production slowed or even halted.
the dry land easily caught fire. raging fires ran people out of their
homes. animals died too, either from dehydration or the fires. flooding
did much the same as the droughts. farms were flooded of their crops.
people and animals drowned.

mass hysteria hit. the fear of a dying world caused people to act out.
stores were raided. people took food and water and medicine, the
necessities. but useless items such as televisions and gaming systems
were stolen too. fights broke out and people killed each other. the
world became unrecognizable. thousand died by the hands of their
fellow humans. thousands died from the extreme weather. marshal law
was put in to place throughout, but without communication it was hard
to coordinate much. governments found it hard to keep their people both
in check and alive. but what killed the majority of earths life was the
radiation.

radiation poisoning was what caused billions to die. the disease was
easy to detect and affected anyone and everyone. it starts out with a
simple fever and resembles the flu. the victim may have a fever for
several days. the fever doesn't go away and the next symptom arises;
migraines and headaches. incapacitating and painful headaches and
migraines can cause the suffer to be bed ridden or suddenly loose
consciousness. the next state is the inability to hold down any solid or
liquid sustenance. the sufferer may vomit multiple times a day or feel
nauseous. unable to hold down liquids and with a burning fever the
victim will die of radiation poisoning in just a week.

now, one month after the death of the planet, survivors are trying their
best to stay alive. the heat is intense day and night, sometimes reaching
well into the hundreds. clean, fresh water is hard to get by. but food is
surprisingly abundant, canned food that is. one will find it very difficult
to grow anything and keep it alive. first aid supplies can be found at
hospitals as well. the animals are trying just as hard to survive, and many
have gone into feral states. dogs aren't very friendly and dog packs can
be found running a muck.

overview
the role play is in a made up town named pike, after the founder. the
town is located in oregon. before the flare the small town was known
for its beautiful, green scenery and landscaping. rustic shops,
cafe's, and boutiques. surrounded by mountains and rivers is was quite
a quaint city. to the north of the city was a forest and mountain. the
forest is known as pikes forest. the forest had many walking and bicycle
trails. bridges connected spaces between steep, gaping hills. large oaks
and pines filled the sky while moss and bushes covered the forest floor.
the mountain, which is also a dormant volcano, is known as mount pike.
it is suspected that the mountain had once erupted centuries ago and
that's why the land was so abundantly green. a river ran through pike's
forest and through the town of pike. the river is named dragonfly
river. the river is called so because it is a breeding ground for all sorts
of dragonfly species. the river curves around the north east corner of
pike then cuts through the eastern side of pike. here on the east side
those cafe's. boutiques, and rustic shops can be found. this area of
town is like the touristy shopping center with stone walkways and
hanging flower pots. cars aren't allowed in the center so there is a
parking lot next to it. next to this touristy center is where the
hospital, grocery stores, schools, parks, movie theater, and even zoo
can be found. around these areas are residential lots with homes can
be found. finally train tracks make their way through the town but
they've been unused for years.

the town center
the town center is where most everything important can be found. by
important i mean the pharmacies, grocery stores, hospital, weapon
shop, and gas stations can be found. most of the pharmacies and stores
have been raided, however not everything is barren. a few stores were
able to keep control of their stock and ward off any raiders. the only
weapon shop was locked up tight by its owner but that didn't stop
people from raiding the guns and knives and other weapons. still, a few
weapons still stand in cases and shelves. the streets are empty of any
cars and usually of people. broken glass and trash line the streets.
store windows have been smashed and doors brought down. one of the
street lights has actually been knocked over into the street.

the hospital
the hospital is in a strange state. around the hospital is a sort of make
shift barricade made from ambulances, hospital beds, hospital equipment
and technology. this wall was to keep out raiders and surrounds the
entire hospital, which actually isn't that big since the town is small itself.
the barricade goes up several feet and is hard to get over. inside the
hospital things aren't all that great. a sickening smell engulfs the entire
place. that smell is death. the dead bodies were never removed from the
hospital, just covered up. everything is quite pristine and clean looking
still, though most rooms are empty because the furniture was used to
make the barricade. medical supplies is surprisingly available in the
hospital though, mostly because nobody can get over the wall.

the tourist center
the tourists center isn't as it used to be. the once beloved shops and
cafe's have been frozen in time. the hanging potted plants have all
shriveled up and died. here everything is stagnant and un-moving. it's
unnaturally quiet and foreboding, as if the center knows something you
don't and is holding its breath. the place is also unusually clean. it looks
as if no one tried to raid the place, except it has been raided. just more
thoughtfully than the town center and hospital. but the place isn't as
safe as it seems. a wild dog pack runs wild through the center. they
attack anyone and anything that dare make their way into the tourist
center.

pikes forest + pike mountain
the forest is no longer this beautifully green place that was descried
above. now the forest is dry and dead. due to the heat the dead plants
easily caught fire and an ongoing fire has been slowly eating away at
the forest. the blaze is bright and lights up the night. the sky is typically
covered in gray smoke and it rains ash. the fire is at the base of the
mountain and to the western side of the forest, but it's slowly making its
way down toward the town. animals have also been retreating from the
forest and making their way into the town.

dragonfly river
the river isn't what it once was. much of the water has evaporated and
the water level has sunken quite a bit. the water has been filled with
ash from the burning forest as well as hundreds of dragonfly bodies.
the water is not clean to drink from and this fish in the water are most
likely not safe to eat.

the theme park
the theme park is like any other theme park with towering roller
coasters, water rides and too many concession stands. the place is
rightfully desolate and hasn't been touched since technology went on
the fritz. most of the cheese filled, deep fried, and fatty food has gone
bad and is inedible. whatever water was there has other been stolen or
boiled away in the heat. although a few of the water rides still hold
small pools of the precious liquor that may be able to be distilled and
purified. the gift shops are still filled to the brim with knick-knacks
and merchandise. be wary of the coasters for the metal is extreamly
hot and will quickly burn skin quickly. many birds call the theme park
home so be careful where you step.
