[ plainclan ] [ second clan ]

    ⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺ [ PLAINCLAN! ] ⸺⸺⸺⸺⸺
    plainclan's landscape offers a lot more than what its name implies; hills, ponds, and of course - plains, take over the north and west
    whereas flat swampland reins in the east and south. it is a land much untouched by modern twoleg contraptions with only one small
    twoleg town that exists as a halfway point from the plains to the swamps and two giant manors on the southwest and eastern sides.
    a winding river cuts through the land, emptying out into a lake. which due to their location overlooking a small bay is where plain
    clan gets their main water source from.

    plainclan's camp is enclosed by thick forest, which helps in keeping the group remote and well-hidden from threats such as twolegs
    and other wild animals. as for the cats themselves, there's no telling what their reputation will become - they're very new to this life
    and bonding together may be harder than their future founder realizes.

    [ this will be my second clan! ]
    [ territory inspo is credited to the scarlett meadows location in rdr2. ]
    [ if i can go ahead and add in cats i've gotten from readopts, may unnamed, vera, jasper, tally, and salvatore join? ]

total cats;; 004 next skypool visit;; 15th kit due dates;; times here clan serving size;; 2 fresh kill consumed;; one fruit bat

heatstar snapped as yarrowscar caught his claws in his side, warning him physically to back off. he snarled as the claws lay in his side, "You better watch yourself, healer, I'm the one in charge here..."

yarrowscar smirked nervously, pulling his claws out of heatstar's body (he noted that heatstar hadn't flinched an inch) before saying, "boy, I control some pretty dangerous herbs and know how to use them properly. I got more than every right to kill you if you mouth off at me again. So you better watch your own self..."

heatstar ran his tongue across his lips in anger, before narrowing his eyes and lowering his voice, "You may be a healer, but I'm the leader. Obey, or die. Your choice."

yarrowscar hissed and lashed his paw out at the retreating heatstar, who was pretending not to be the slightest bit worried, but in actuality was terrified of the older cat who had threatened his life. it was good that the two had a healthy fear of the other, as both had murdered for enjoyment as well as necessity. neither were good cats, and neither claimed to be. they just needed to work around each other.

[ graveclan does not eat for one moon. ]
[ aloeshade applies x2 elder leaves to toadsplash. ]
[ flintmask rests for his third moon out of three. ]
[ ivytongue returns to his warrior duties. ]
[ cormorantface rests for his third moon out of three. ]
[ toadsplash rests for his first moon out of two. ]
[ strawberrynose takes over flintmask's mentoring duties for the next two moons. ]
[ clovertail takes over cormorantface's mentoring duties for the next two moons. ]
[ webpaw searches for herbs. ]
[ all apprentices train for their respective skills. ]
[ linnetkit, asterkit, quailkit, beekit, fennelkit, chubkit, orangekit, pearkit, peachkit, grapekit, cranekit, and heronkit have become apprentices! ]
[ pigeonpaw, cedarpaw, adderpaw, and minnowpaw take their warrior assessments! if they pass, they will be known as pigeonface, cedarjaw, adderfang, and minnowflash. ]
↪ during the warrior assessment, while in the river, cedarpaw is swept under. she hits her face on a rock at the bottom of the river, dislocating her jaw. it is, unfortunately, unable to be straightened and so thus she will always have a crooked jaw.
[ wiltedstar, geckosplash, flintmask, heavypad, fallowstep, and chamomilewhisker pursue the scent of the predator! ]
[ ivytongue, pineflower, littlefang, hawkeyes, cormorantface, and raptorgaze patrol the borders. ]
[ blackthorn, silversky, dogbite, sorrelcloud, hickorypatch, and toadsplash patrol the borders. ]
[ sweetdrop, neritefang, cicadacloud, barleystep, laureleye, and valerianthroat patrol the borders. ]
↪ sweetdrop has applicable powers! she attracts at least one cat while patrolling the borders.
[ sugarfoot, hornetfur, applebelly, avocetstream, timberspot, and minkbelly go hunting. ]
[ lemonfur, ryepatch, pelicanface, thrushwing, clovertail, and dirtstripe go hunting. ]
[ campionstep, arguspelt, hollyfoot, thymetail, gatorbite, and lizardthroat go hunting. ]
[ aloeshade has shared the prophecy with spidernose and webpaw! aloeshade, spidernose, and webpaw are currently the only cats with knowledge of the prophecy. ]
[ ravencall is kitting! fallowstep and hawkeyes are the fathers. mirra attends the birthing to prevent complications. ]

MoorClan
Kindness heals what was broken, mercy clears what was marred and peace brings back what was lost.
Number of Cats: 64| Males: 29 | Females: 35 | Last Post: X

The silence was as fragile as an eggshell.

Before the miserable clan loomed dark trees, with darker things moving about in the undergrowth. A chilly wind cut through their pelts as Garlicstar led the soot-smeared clan through the forests; Soft heather had been long replaced by roots that twisted under their paws and dead leaves that clung to their messy fur. The entire forest seemed to be bowed, as though they'd witnessed MoorClan's ruin and mourned for it.

Still shaking, the white molly stood quiet in an alcove of ferns and tried not to imagine the cats they'd left behind. Would their spirits manage to find their way home? Would they even know where they went? Would StarClan try and crush them like ants again? Garlicstar didn't know, and in the end all she had was a head full of questions and a heavy heart.

''Garlicstar?'' Dawnpool murmured, leaning against the stricken leader. ''The clan's on the move, Briarcloud's leading them.'' At the sound of fading paws, Dawnpool nudged Garlicstar on-wards. ''A-are you okay? You seem a little shaken.'' Who could blame her honestly? Being leader meant that everyone expected you to comfort them, but then who was there to soothe the leader? It was funny honestly, but the more Dawnpool watched the leaders, the less she had faith that she could be leader. In the end, Dawnpool knew that ambition would be her ruin.

Stirred out of her reverie, Garlicstar plodded on with heavy paws. ''Mhm, you can say that again.'' She sighed, looking downcast. ''It just feels like everything's turned against us.'' The white cat peered at Dawnpool, smiling wryly. ''Do you remember a single moment of peace? When everything used to be fine for MoorClan?'' There was not a response, both cats knew the answer already. ''These days I feel like curling up and just letting the plants consume me...'' Her tone was wistful, her eyes flickering around the fertile surroundings like swallows.

Dawnpool stopped at the edge of a great creek, the icy-waters cutting through the shaggy brambles. ''Maybe, but we'll have to see.'' Gingerly, the pale-grey molly led Garlicstar across a moss-worn log and towards the rest of their miserable clan-mates. ''Or not see, in my case.'' Dawnpool teased, her voice softer than the fur on a rabbit's belly. ''But with you as our leader, maybe you can bring some common sense into these lunk-heads for once.''

''Common sense? Never heard of her.'' Garlicstar huffed. ''I'm glad you have faith in me, Dawn, but I can't do this without you and the others.'' She smiled weakly, the sort of smile that reminded others of a feeble winter's sun breaking through the dark clouds. ''But I'll see to it that MoorClan survives, just...just stick with me.''

''You got it.''

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The black tom dragged himself from the depths of the forest, his hungry eyes scorning the stars above; Three lives, three miserable lives to atone for his sins and Blaire wondered what else they could tear from him in the meantime. They had torn innocence away from him, they had torn Mayfly from him, they had even torn his own death away from him. With a disgruntled snarl, Blaire shook himself thoroughly and marched on. All he knew of this cruel world was that it had given him three more chances and as much as he would've loved to be petty, Blaire knew that he couldn't squander those chances.

Creeping quietly through the tangle of creeping ivy and bindwind, Blaire heard the whisper of voices. Ears twitching, the small black tom peered through the dark leaves and patiently, he waited until the speakers walked into view; One was a lanky dark-grey tom cat with sharp yellow eyes and the other was literally a sentient puff-ball. Neither of them seemed threatening and with a confident swagger, Blaire prowled in front of them.

''State your names.'' His voice was gruff and heavy from moons of disuse, bearing the weight of moons of bullying cats into submission with a voice that had been more prickly than a bramble-bush; Not a sliver of softness remained, not a whisper.

The white puffball let out a cry of alarm, before scrambling to hide behind the older tom's tail. ''I'm Mallowpaw! Of BrambleClan!'' His wide eyes stared at Blaire, as though he'd never seen a cat such as he. ''And this is Ratstar! Of BrambleClan!'' Mallowpaw's voice was high-pitched, like the scream of a cuckoo.

''Call me Ratwhisker.'' The dark grey tom did not waver, standing before Blaire as sure-hearted as a lion. ''What about you?'' Quirking a brow, Ratwhisker smirked quietly. ''Doesn't seem right for us tell you our names, when you won't introduce yourself.'' Tilting his head, Ratwhisker stared patiently at the black tom, his yellow eyes seeming to burn through him.

Shuffling his paws quietly, Blaire stared back at Ratwhisker. ''I'm Blaire.'' He replied, refusing to yield to the burning stare. With a twitching tail, he turned towards Mallowpaw and frowned. ''And what is this BrambleClan you've been screaming of?''

Wincing, Mallowpaw didn't quite meet Blaire's eyes and contented himself to speak to the tom's nose. ''BrambleClan's no more, we're just a pair of loners...'' He sighed, ears twitching as he recalled days of his clan-mates and a sense of peace that had wrapped around his shoulders; So funny how quickly they had all left, Mallowpaw realized with a jolt, had BrambleClan perhaps really meant so little to them? With an ache in his chest, Mallowpaw blinked furiously to drive away the tears and stared up at Blaire. ''Where are you headed, sir?''

''Wherever you are.'' Blaire stated, turning to Ratwhisker. ''If that's okay with you?''

With a heavy sigh, Ratwhisker nodded quietly. ''Might as well join us, if you've got no plans.'' He reasoned, although none of them had anywhere to be; Odd, he almost missed the hustle and bustle that leadership had brought. Now that he had all the freedom and time in the world, there was nothing to do with it. ''I'd say get shelter before it's dark, but ah...it's already dark.'' Even when the sun had been at it's highest, it scarcely managed to slip through the thick tangle of leaves, barely strong enough to hold the shadows at bay.

''So it is.'' Blaire replied flatly. ''Such poetry.'' He rolled his eyes, stalking past the older tom. A fragment of shadow in motion, the black cat led the other two down long and winded paths. ''Stick close to me, I don't want you two to get lost.'' In truth, Blaire didn't want to get lost; Isolation tended to make one hungry for company, even if it were with a pair of strangers that seemed remarkably incompetent when it came to getting things done.

Mallowpaw remained quiet as the three travelled deeper and deeper into woods. He tried not to complain about the whirr of wings in the undergrowth and the way the mud seemed to cling to his paws, the leaf-rot making his nose wrinkle in disgust. He was a wild-cat! Wild-cats didn't complain about things as trivial as muck! With pill-bug blue eyes, Mallowpaw stared up at the stranger and quietly wondered if he was leading them all astray? But then, why would he? Mallowpaw whimpered slightly, feeling bad for doubting another simply because he was a black cat.

Not all black cats were bad luck! And not all white cats were good luck, Mallowpaw reminded himself with a grim expression. Only kits and moon-dazed elders thought such things as that. To judge someone by the colour of their fur was truly the most wicked thing that Mallowpaw could think of, besides manslaughter.

''You're staring, Mallow.'' reprimanded Ratwhisker softly, casting his apprentice an unamused look. ''Don't be like that, I know we scarcely know Blaire but I'll keep you safe.'' The grey tom promised, with the friendliest smile he had (which in retrospect was not very friendly). ''And besides...there are plenty of cats like him that were perfectly fine.'' Ratwhisker's voice dropped into a low whisper, stern and hushed. ''Put away those those prejudices, we don't need them here.''

''I know, sorry.'' Mallowpaw replied with a grimace, ducking his head in shame. ''I know it's wrong, it's hard...'' He whined, recalling his mother's stories; They were long-winded and a little dramatic, but they seemed so vivid and he did love his mother. ''My mother used to always tell me stories and...if you were there, you'd believe her!'' Mallowpaw protested, trying to ignore the guilt that prickled along the back of his spine.

Ratwhisker shook his head. ''No excuse, you can still change.'' He smiled thinly. ''I wasn't always a moody piece of [redacted] and that means you can choose not to be so judgmental, Mallowpaw, just watch what you say and do.'' Ratwhisker glanced quietly at Blaire, watching the black tom padding on. ''There's no reason to those stories besides stirring up pointless fear, use your own wits.'' He continued. ''Those are more trustworthy than the tales of an aging cat.''

''Of course.'' Mallowpaw swallowed thickly, touching Ratwhisker's shoulder with the tip of his tail. ''I understand.'' It made sense really, since the beginning of time they had all been fighting to survive; The pelt of a cat had made no difference, and in many ways, Mallowpaw could see the cracks in his mother's thinking. He just had to dig a little deeper to find the truth, which he was frustrated to find was really so simple. ''Thank you...'' Turning from Ratwhisker, Mallowpaw jumped in shock to find Blaire staring at him. ''...Blaire.'' Had the tom heard everything? He probably had, but Blaire's face was unreadable. ''S-sorry...I shou-''

''Yeah, you should've.'' Blaire growled under his breath, shaking his head solemnly. ''If you're gonna say things like that, you should just stuff your mouth with moss.'' The tom had harsher words on his mind, but given the way Ratwhisker was looking at him, Blaire wasn't going to risk it. Besides, Mallowpaw seemed hurt enough at that. ''Whatever, just look alive.'' Blaire grunted, the fur on his spine bristling like a nettle patch. ''Someone's watching us.''

A blackbird burst out from one of the trees with a witch-like cry, a woodpecker whirring somewhere in the foliage and the heady drone of wasps filled the evening air; Nothing cat-like seemed to stir and for a moment, Blaire wondered if it had simply been his paranoia setting in. Things moved differently in the dark, the shadows congealing and swirling as though they had minds of their own. Perhaps it had just been a bird, like an owl, set intently with it's wide eyes upon them, wondering if they'd make a tasty supper, wondering if it was worth the risk.

And then a pale-figure stepped down before them, shivering in the dusk-light. ''Ratwhisker, Blaire, Mallowpaw.'' A rumbling voice rolled out of a slim muzzle, the number of teeth far too many for their liking. ''The Clan of the Moors is nearby.'' Pointing a tail in the direction of a thorn-laden path, the figure turned slowly back to the trio. ''Go, they'll provide shelter.''

Several moon-bright eyes opened as the figure hurried them on. ''Hurry, before we awake.''

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No matter how much he tossed and turned, Antfoot remained as wide-eyed as the owl that watched from the darkness. Orbs of amber blinked out every now and then, looming in the foliage before winking out again; He tried to call them fireflies, but they were much too big and it was much too cold for fireflies. Tail twisting to and fro, the black tom frowned at a tall pine. He could've sworn it had been further away, but now that he looked again it seemed closer.

''...First I lose my honour, and now my mind?'' Antfoot muttered under his breath, crouched between two giant boulders that marked the edge of their inner sanctum, their shelter, their yawning home. ''Geez, can fate relax?'' The black tom yawned, staring angrily at the pine. It's shaggy branches did not quiver, but Antfoot couldn't get rid of that unsettling feeling that something was moving; Was it the earth? Was it the moon drifting through the dark sky? Or was it that blasted pine-tree that just had to haunt him constantly?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fur on edge, Beetlestep crept along the edge of the creek; The dark waters roared through the night, the white froth ghostly in the moon-light. Perhaps, she would've found it beautiful if it weren't for the flickering lights occupying her attention. They bounced up and down in the air, as warm as the sun; Orbs of gold, spinning like embers in the night. ''...Fire?'' Beetlestep's voice was full of dread, as her body fell slack. ''Did...fire follow us all the way here?'' Tilting her head confusedly, she slowly began to find herself moving forward.

The embers flickered, winking quietly at Beetlestep as she stumbled after them on numbed paws. Shadow after shadow collapsed behind her, forming a thick trail of black after her; The rumbling creek continued to murmur secrets to itself, as though trying to coax Beetlestep in to discover its mysteries. ''Fire?'' She mumbled, wearily padding after the bright light in the dark; Somewhere in the back of her mind, Beetlestep vaguely recalled being afraid of fire but all she could was follow it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lichenface lay sprawled in the dark, listening to the moan and sigh of the wind. It moved like a living thing, bounding and twisting like a playful kit; If she focused, Lichenface wondered if those were voices she could hear rushing by; An entire history seemed to be bled into the air, discovered in the murmurous echoes that rippled off the cave-walls. It was peaceful, and Lichenface found herself lulled gently into sleep.

And then the words came into focus, shambling out of the half-dark like wounded warriors. It was a terrible secret and Lichenface's eyes snapped open, her paws scrambling to keep her upright; Rest? There would be no rest with the cries and whispers she had heard, of condemned souls floating in the rushing air.

Help us! Help us! They're coming, they're coming! Oh Grimalkin, they're coming! Help us, help us!

Re: Create A Clan- V.4

Number of Cats: 4

The breeze blows hot as the sun beats down through the swamp trees. The water boils under the heat, all creatures taking cover in any shady areas they can find far from the piercing sun. With this blazing heatwave breaching through the trees and lichens, the evaporating water has created a mist that covers the whole clan territory. The clan cats are doing as little as they can to avoid the mist hiding mysteries under it. All except a dark leader that presses on in isolation and determination. "Hunt you two!"
"No, it's too hot! We won't catch anything if we go now, we need to wait until Starclan rises." protests two warriors in the sanctuary of their nests in the tree. Their ears pinned back and tails flicking as the cold golden stare of their leader seemed to resemble the sun's rays. "Fine! I'll go hunt while you mouse-brains go patrol!" the leader hissed through his fangs before whipping around and climbing down the tree to leave the camp, jet pelt clinging loosely to his body. The two lighter colored cats looked at one another, almost sorry, and climbed down to go check on the new queen in her lonely den off to the side. "How are you holding up, Chervilpatch?" Mudpatch asked, Reedface nodding as if asking the question as well. "Just fine, thank you. What's wrong with Shadowstar, though? He's so cold... I swear he could shatter if he did anything."
"Don't mind that crude old tom, he's been like that since we joined the clan." replied Mudpatch, Reedface suddenly silent as the memories flashed by his mind of Shadowstar's renunciation of deputies. Surely he didn't mean it... "We're going to go patrol the boarders, we'll be back soon." Reedface said suddenly, with a comforting smile on his face. Chervilpatch smiled back and nodded as the warriors turned to patrol.

Anhingstar watched as his newest warrior he received from StarClan train with Solidagowhisker for a bit, before flicking his tail. "I need you two to hunt with Talonwhisker," he meowed, tail flicking. "I'm going to go patrol the territory to see if I can find a cat or two to join us," he meowed, noticing he was small compared to other clans. "And don't forget to eat your share!" he told the cats, before leaving to patrol boundaries.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

    Bathed within the luminous glow of the moon, two cats fought beneath the eyes of the gods, crimson blood smeared across snowy fur, chips of ice glinting within their blue eyes. The pair were twins, equal in looks, but not in battle skill; only one would prevail over the other in combat.
    indentAbove them, sitting atop a rock on the skinned pelt of a white rabbit, sat a menacing black maine coon, orange eyes set on the two, judgement burning through his expression. Behind him were the antlers of an elk, with nine points on its rack, representing the nine lives of which the gods had given the brute. It was Djaevel, the Kajser of the mighty Sanguine Empire. On the left of him was his single confidant, Laerke, the first cat to join the empire and the high advisor of the nation.
    indent“Give up now, Heidi, I can’t go easy on you forever,” the low voice of Lake murmured as she dodged left as her sister struck out a paw, narrowly missing her chest.
    indent“You know I can’t do that,” Heidi replied through gritted teeth “I don’t want to hurt you, but I don’t have a choice either.”
    indentLake blinked back her hurt, managing to becoming caught in her sister’s powerful attack as she tumbled to the ground, falling on her back with a painful thud. “We don’t need to do this, Heidi, we can run away, we can leave!”
    indent“I can’t just turn my back on this opportunity, neither of us can.” Her paws slammed against Lake’s shoulders, and she lowered her head, “we’ve been running for too long, we deserve this!”
    indentLake shook her head. “I deserve nothing if the only reason I got it was from the pain of others,” her voice was a whisper, blue eyes begging her sister. “That is what this empire wants, this is the place for sinners!”
    indent“That’s exactly why we belong here.” Heidi’s tone was harsh, though the wobble in her voice said enough to how scared she was, and with that she unsheathed her claws, raking them down her sides. She turned away from the molly, shutting her eyes shut as she tried to block out her feelings of betrayal.
    indentLake let out a cry before mumbling the words ‘I surrender’. Heidi opened her eyes, looking up to the black maine coon, Djaevel. He glared back, amber eyes filled with a sinister fire that made the white molly want to shrink back in fear.
    indent“She surrendered, the battle is finished,” Heidi said, straightening up, “have we proved our worth?”
    indentDjaevel’s response was not immediate, letting a silence engulfed by tension fill them as Heidi’s eyes rested upon the tom. At last, he spoke, giving a dismissive flick of the ear as he did so. You did, young soldier, but your sister did not. She is not worthy of the empire, for she is far too weak in spirit and strength,” He shot a disapproving glance at the blood-soaked feline before continuing, “execute her, and Laerke will prepare you for—”
    indent“I’m not going to kill my own sister!” Heidi cut off the Kajser mid-sentence, taken aback by his words.
    indent“Do not interrupt me.” His voice was sharp, like a cold dagger slicing through flesh, “either you will kill her or I will, and only one of those options keeps you in this clan.”
    indent“I will not kill her, nor will I let you do so. She is strong, I promise you! We were weak when we came here, and Lake got herself injured after fighting off a dog. I had the upper hand in the fight, it was the only reason I won. Please, let her live. She will not let you down; I will not let you down.”
    indentDjaevel considered his options carefully, amber eyes no longer meeting Heidi’s gaze but his advisor, Laerke, who sat near to him on the large boulder. The two exchanged quiet words before the maine coon drew himself back to his full height, focusing his attention back upon the sisters.
    indent“Three months. That is all the time she gets to show this strength you claim she has. If she does not meet my standards...” His lips peeled back slightly, revealing sharp, ivory fangs, “I will show them myself, beginning with my claws slitting her throat.”

The sun began to dip low over the horizon, the Greenleaf sunset colouring the sky bright orange behind the heads of the GroveClan cats as they gathered beneath the Leader's Tree, where Badgerstar sat perched on one of the roots, smiling fondly at a proud Adderpaw, whose reedy, tall form was drawn up as much as she could to hide her nervousness. She turned, casting a glance at Lionheart and Acornstream behind her.
"You did great," Acornstream whispered, and Adderpaw spared her a tight smile, before Badgerstar continued on with the ceremony, now that the cats had assembled. "I, Badgerstar of GroveClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your code, and I could not recommend you a more capable, deserving warrior. Adderpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?" Adderpaw gave a resolute nod, voice clear and firm when she spoke.
"I do," she said, "always."
"Then it is my honour to give you your warrior name. You will forever be known as Adderstorm, for your strength. StarClan honours your dedication, your tenacity, and your sense of duty. I have had no greater pleasure than to welcome you as a full warrior of GroveClan." Yowls echoed around the camp as cats began to welcome the newest warrior, the she-cat seemed overwhelmed with emotion as she stepped toward Badgerstar to lick his shoulder, feeling the weight of his chin rest atop her head.
"Congratulations," Badgerstar whispered to her, "for what it's worth, I'm glad that you found your home in GroveClan." Adderstorm smiled as she stepped away from him, ears tilting back toward the clan as she listened to the voices ringing out among the cries of her new name. Acornstream and Lionheart yowled loudly, but even over them, she heard one other voice:
"Adderstorm!" She turned, eyes seeking out the brilliant eyes of Squirrelwhisker in the crowd. He gave her a smile, ears flicking, as he opened his maw and yowled her name again.

"I thought you might be hungry," Boulderflame mewed, startling Flowershine out of contemplation. She glanced up to see the black tom, backlit by the gorgeous sky, a mouse clutched between his jaws. She smiled kindly at him, shuffling across a little to make room for him to wedge in between the roots of a tree next to her. For a moment, they sat in silence, watching other groups congregate around the camp. Burrcall was standing and laughing with Burningcloud, Meadowfang and Willowthroat, while Acornstream and Shadowtail had been joined by Dustfang and Hawkthorn. Featherpelt was talking amicably with Flintburr, Sedgefire and Halfpond while Ternkit and Avocetkit scampered around near them with the other kits. Lionheart and Ashenstrike sat together, quiet in conversation, while Roseclaw and Pinefeather laughed a little too loudly at something that Maplefall had said, the small she-cat leaning against her mate.
"It's nice, isn't it?" Boulderflame said, finally, "it really feels like the clan is coming together. Like we're a family. And I mean, a lot of us are. There are more ties than ever between the cats here." His gaze drifted to where Fawnrunner and Goldleaf were laughing together while Mousepaw and Stonepatch were sparring, back to back with Dusklight and Dawnblossom who were demonstrating some kind of move to Novella.
"It is nice," Flowershine mewed noncommittally, before she shook her head with a wince, "sorry, sorry. I just can't get that border patrol out of my head. I can't shake the feeling that something is wrong." She felt Boulderflame's nose touch her cheek, and she gave him a grateful smile, laying her tail over his. "What are you really worried about?" He asked her, head tilting a little as he waited for her response. She blew out a sigh.
"It... seems odd, for us at least. GroveClan never has that kind of trouble, and those cats... they didn't seem nice. It feels like the balance has been set off, and I- I worry. What will the future be like for us, Boulderflame? If we make enemies out of those cats, will my kits be safe in this clan? Will I ever be able to hunt in the fields again without the sinking feeling of there being something out there, beyond the grass? I'm not afraid of change, but it's nagging at me that this isn't the good kind of change."
"Hey," Boulderflame's voice was gentle, as he shifted closer, allowing Flowershine a frustrated sigh as she pressed her face into his chest, comforted by the weight of his cheek against the top of her head, "no matter what, I won't let anything happen to you, or to your kits. I... I care about you, and if I'm being honest, I've hoped for a while now that any future you might have includes me, in a very specific context. And even if that wasn't the case, I would still protect you. I would protect everyone here, just like Badgerstar would, and Lionheart. Neither of them will allow GroveClan to become a place that isn't safe."
"Boulderflame," Flowershine mewed, pulling back to look at him. She hesitated a moment, and then pressed their noses together, "I love you, I really do, and I know you're right." She pulled back, leaving Boulderflame startled and more than a tad bit smitten, "I just can't help but wonder to what extent GroveClan's safety is out of their control."
"Maybe it is," Boulderflame replied, gentler still, "but the fact of the matter remains. They care about this clan, we all do, and I know we'll all do our best to keep the spirit of this clan, no matter what happens. And in spite of anything that could happen..." he trailed off, pressing his nose to her cheek, "I'll be right by your side to weather it with you."

"A moon to go," Hawkthorn mewed, as his mate lounged against him, tail swept protectively around her belly. Shadowtail purred, the sound intensifying as Dustfang nuzzled her cheek. "It's kind of surreal to think about," Shadowtail mewed, "but I'm excited. Plus, since Acornstream is in the nursery, our kits will get to grow up as friends. I hope they can look to Woodbloom and Squirrelwhisker as role models, too. I know our parents would have wanted us to keep the family strong."
"And we will," Hawkthorn leaned forward to touch his nose to his sister's, "we've done so well already. I mean, I certainly wouldn't have a mate if it weren't for your influence, so really I think you win the title of 'best sister in the world' because I... I could not ask for a better mate." He and Acornstream exchanged fond looks, before a cough from Dustfang drew them back to the conversation with sheepish smiles. The silver tom was wrapped around his mate, carefully grooming her behind her ears. Shadowtail's eyes were closed with contentment.
"I didn't think we'd ever end up here," she said with a soft sigh, "when the clan disbanded, I thought that was it for us. Trying to find a permanent home again... I didn't have a lot of hope." Hawkthorn blinked at her in shock. "You always seemed so optimistic. Why didn't you tell me?" Shadowtail's eyes opened, and she gave him a gentle smile. "I was so worried for you, I thought I had to protect you and be strong for you to lean on, but I didn't realize you were being strong for me too. I forgot that you were my brother, not my child, I think. I should have told you, but seeing you here, seeing everything you've accomplished... I'm proud of you. I love you, brother."
Hawkthorn's eyes welled with affection as the pair of them leaned forward, foreheads touching. Their mates let them sit like that, allowing them whatever words they needed to pass between them, in that uncanny way that Hawkthorn and Shadowtail seemed to implicitly understand each other. Finally, Shadowtail settled back into Dustfang's solid flank, allowing his tail to curl around her again. Her eyes fluttered shut at his grooming, and she began a low, rumbling purr.
"I have to say, though," Hawkthorn said, "we're going to miss you two on patrols."
"Well," said Acornstream, "I think Dustfang is going to miss you too." Her mate blinked at Acornstream, not quite comprehending, but he noticed a moment too late where this teasing was heading, and his face turned into amusement as she quipped; "since you'll spend all the time you have fussing over me and Shadowtail." Dustfang and the molly burst into laughter, as Hawkthorn huffed, not nearly as put out as he pretended to be. "I like to think I've learned my lesson!" He protested.
"You really haven't," said Shadowtail, purring, "but that's okay. We've accepted that you're just a worrisome warrior, and we wouldn't have you any other way. And, in all seriousness, with Shadowtail and I out, you're one of the more senior warriors. It's probably time that you had an apprentice." Hawkthorn blinked, and then his eyes widened. "Oh, I hadn't even thought of that. And there's so many of them who'll be apprentices soon. Wow. Yeah, wow, I didn't even consider that." The group dissolved into laughter again, as Acornstream touched her nose to her mate's cheek.
The sun set on GroveClan, with laughter filling the air.

Stonepatch's paws landed on empty air as his daughter skittered out of his grip nimbly, tongue poked out at him. "Missed me!" Elkkit decreed cheerfully, before she let out a squeal as her mother picked her up by her scruff, making the kit laugh as she swung her to and fro. Suddenly, small paws pummeled her side, and she flopped over dramatically as the rest of her kits piled onto her, paws pushing at her face to make her release their sister.
The giggling kits scattered to corners of the nursery as Stonepatch teasingly stalked forward, helping to nudge his mate back to her feet, both of them laughing. "Oh no," he said with a feigned-dramatic gasp, "these warriors are too strong for us, my love." Fawnrunner nodded sagely, leaning on Stonepatch as if she were mortally wounded. "Indeed... we must make a hasty retreat, but this isn't the last you will see of us."
She narrowed her eyes at her kits, before all of them burst out laughing, and Stonepatch settled down in Fawnrunner's nest, his mate settling in close against him so that her mate could groom her fur, picking out tangled bits of debris from the den's floor that had gotten caught in her fur. Their kits bounded across to them, crawling back into the nest and snuggling up by her side. "That was fun!" Declared Elkkit. "Can dad swing us like that again?"
"Tomorrow," Stonepatch promised, "you'll have too much energy to sleep tonight otherwise, and your mother and I need our rest too, you know." Elkkit huffed, but didn't press the issue further when her sister nudged her shoulder. "Don't worry," Stonepatch soothed, "it's not long until you two will be apprentices, you know. Then you'll be able to exert all of that energy training." Elkkit groaned a little. "Training makes it sound so boring," she mewed, "I just wanna play with my friends."
"You'll have plenty of time for that too," Fawnrunner soothed, licking her grumbling daughter between the ears. Thunderkit let out a snort, and Elkkit pouted at her sister, usually her greatest partner in crime. Stonepatch's face softened a little in fondness as he looked at his kits. Of the four of them, Elkkit and Thunderkit had the strongest personalities and seemed to be closest, always getting into trouble together. Mistkit and Deerkit were more solitary and introspective, but they didn't seem to have such a tough time interacting with the other kits either.
"How about a story?" He asked, and his kits squealed with excitement, making their mother laugh. "Okay, calm down, or your father won't be able to tell you the story." Sufficiently chastised, the kits fell quiet, and Fawnrunner relaxed back into her mate as he cleared his throat and began: "Once upon a time, when they nights were short and the days were deep, there lived two cats, brothers. Their names were Lux and Cassum."
"Aw, I wanted a love story," Elkkit whined, but her sister shushed her. "Lux and Cassum were very different cats. Where one was tall and slender, with light skin and a calm disposition, the other was short and dark, stocky and strong. They quarreled often, their clashes creating sparks all over the universe. One such fight created the sun, and another the moon, yet another the tides, the grass, the wind-"
"The moon and sun who chase each other across the sky?" Thunderkit prompted with wide eyes. Stonepatch glanced at Fawnrunner, a little bewildered. "Woodbloom was telling us," she mewed to explain, "she said it was a story that Goldleaf told her when she was a kit, that moon of the blizzard." Stonepatch nodded a little, with a hum. "Yes," he said, finally, "that sun and that moon. They were borne of the cosmic power of the brother's clashes." He knew that this would make the story easier to understand for his kits, who nodded, seemingly satisfied.
"One day, they fought so terribly that Lux was wounded. Cassum was ashamed of what he had done to his brother, and so he retreated to the far corners of the world to hide in the shadows. But something odd happened. Without the brothers, one resting and the other in self-imposed exile, the world began to fall apart at the seams. The sun and the moon tried to fix it as best they could as they ran around the earth. The moon stretched her paw out for the tides, and tried to pull her into shore, but they could not maintain balance on their own.
"The sun called out to Lux to help them, instructing him that he must find his brother and reconcile with him, if the world was to be restored. And Lux, always one to help others, sought out his brother, and brought him out of the shadows. He forgave him for the harm he had done to him, and asked him to forgive himself. From that day on, the brothers no longer quarreled, but worked together to bring balance to the world they had created, for they recognized now that they represented good and bad, light and dark, peace and unrest. As different as they were, one without the other was too much, and the world without either of them just couldn't survive. It was their duty to keep the world at a healthy equilibrium. To this day, Lux and Cassum still watch over the earth, making sure that it never swings too far off balance."
"Wow," Thunderkit whispered, eyes wide, "so what you're saying is we shouldn't fight with our siblings because we're stronger together?" Stonepatch blinked. He hadn't exactly been planning on turning it into a moral lesson, other than 'karma is real', but his daughter made a good point. Luckily, Fawnrunner swooped in to save him. "Exactly. As long as you stand by each other, you will never have to worry about being alone."

The cool night breeze ruffled Adderstorm's short fur, but even with the chill of the night setting in, she was warm. Greenleaf in GroveClan brought sunny weather and the kind of warmth that lingered long after the sun went down, it seemed. Or, perhaps that was just the sense of contentment swelling in her stomach. It wasn't that long ago, if she really thought about it, that she'd been a cat with no name, lost, afraid and without anyone or anywhere to go. And now here she was, with friends, a family, and a name that suited her more than she'd ever thought a name could suit anyone.
She allowed herself a private smile, shifting her paws to keep the blood flowing through them, as she tilted her head back to look at the stars. It was a new moon, and the blanket of Silverpelt stretched far and wide across the open air of GroveClan, unmarred by interference from humankind. It wasn't like the city she had grown up in. It was cleaner. More organic. Fresh, and new, and hopeful. It gave her hope for the future.
There was a rustling noise behind her, and her shoulders tensed as she turned, eyes scanning the camp for the noise, before she relaxed at the sight of Squirrelwhisker padding out from the warrior's den, and moving toward her. She gave him a quizzical look, as he came all the way up to her, and settled next to her, staring out into the empty camp in the silence of the night. For a while, they were both quiet, the air stretching between them in a surprisingly comfortable manner.
"You don't have to say anything," Squirrelwhisker said, his voice even, "and I don't expect you to, which is partially why I chose now to do this. I have something I have to say to you, and now seems as good a time as any, so that if it goes sour at least I won't have to know about it until the sun rises." Adderstorm's brow furrowed in concern, and she leaned a little closer to her friend, jaw determinedly still shut so as to observe the conditions of her vigil.
"I think I may be in love with you, Adderstorm," Squirrelwhisker's words shocked her so much that she sat back, physically reeling, "I know I'm young and I don't know much about anything, in regards to love, but... seeing the way that the older cats interact with their mates, hearing the way that they talk about them... it reminds me of how you make me feel. Adderstorm, you're incredible. From the moment I met you, you were so sure of yourself. You were strong-willed, courageous and you weren't afraid to take risks. You're one of the smartest, most capable cats I know, full stop and I... I respect you so much. You challenge me, and you make me want to be better. I want to keep growing with you as a part of my life, in any context." He took a deep breath.
"I guess that's all I have to say, but I... I just wanted you to know. Goodnight." This time, Adderstorm didn't watch him go, too focused on the thoughts swirling around in her brain to notice that she'd been left alone in the cool air of a Greenleaf night.

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"Big day?" Flintburr asked, watching Squirrelwhisker watching Adderstorm from across the camp. The tom sat near his mother and father, watching the young molly continue her conversation amicably with Lionheart and Ashenstrike. Something had been up with those two recently, but Featherpelt's voice dragged him back to the conversation at hand, as she gave an airy laugh and nodded a bit.
"I suppose it is, my kits becoming apprentices," she mewed, "but honestly, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to going on patrols again. I've missed the freedom of being able to go out and about. I know my responsibilities as a parent aren't over, they never are of course, but... well. At least now they'll have other cats looking out for them too. You must know how it feels to be parenting twofold," she said, but Flintburr just ducked his head.
"Halfpond and Sedgefire came to the clan when they were already adults," he replied, "I didn't have much of a chance to be a father in their formative years, but I'm trying to make up for it now." He glanced across to where his kits were sitting, hunched against the cool morning air of Leaf-fall, Sedgefire laughing loudly at something Dusklight had said, while Halfpond and Dawnblossom huddled close together, Harrierstreak and Longriver chatting amicably with them, too.
"All cats gather beneath Highbranch!" Badgerstar called, and instantly the groups began to shift toward the branch. Flintburr turned to watch the remaining queens exit the nursery. Maplefall and Fawnrunner shepherded their sleepy kits out into the open air, the latter helped along by her mate. Acornstream came next, supporting Shadowtail, who was joined in the campground by Dustfang, their noses touching, before he ducked to mumble something to her heavily pregnant belly. The she-cat laughed and swatted her tail at him, making him side-step, before falling into step beside her. Flintburr gave a fond smile.
"Ternkit and Avocetkit," Badgerstar mewed, dragging the black tom's attention back toward the ceremony, "You have both reached six moons of age, and it is time for you to be apprenticed." The two black and white kits looked at each other, whispering excitedly. "Avocetkit, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Avocetpaw. Your mentor will be Longriver. I know that he will pass down all of his knowledge to you." Badgerstar's attention turned to a shocked looking Longriver, who was being nudged excitedly by his mate. "Longriver, you are more than ready to take on an apprentice. You have received fantastic training from Ashenstrike, and you have shown yourself to be decisive and brave. You will be Avocetpaw's mentor, and I expect you to pass on all you have learned to him."
Cries for the new apprentice echoed around the clan, as the shy tom stepped forward to touch noses with Longriver, before he retreated back to his mother's side. Featherpelt licked him between the ears, whispering her pride to him, which made him smile. The pair of them turned back to watch his sister's ceremony.
"Ternkit, until you receive you warrior name, you will be known as Ternpaw. Your mentor will be Hawkthorn, who I know will pass down a great deal of knowledge to you." This ceremony was shorter, and the clan yowled again, as Ternpaw bounded forward to touch her nose to Hawkthorn, staying put to chat with him excitedly, even as Badgerstar leaped down from the branch and the rest of the clan began to disperse. Lionheart took Badgerstar's place, a smaller ginger molly stuck to her side. Sandpaw, Flintburr's brain supplied, remembering the shy she-cat that had come back with a patrol a few weeks ago, and had been practically glued to her new mentor since.
"Alright," said Lionheart in that even way she was so renowned for, "time for patrol assignments."

"Thanks for coming with me," Mousepaw mewed, stepping carefully over some debris near the lake. Novella shrugged. No big deal. Mousepaw shrugged back, obviously mimicking her actions in a way that made Novella shoulder-budge her. "Well, maybe you don't think it's a big deal, but I still feel bad making you miss patrols to hunt for herbs." Mousepaw kept talking, something about Flowershine being worried and her safety and all that, but Novella was just watching her. For you, it is never an imposition. There is nowhere else I'd rather be.
"- and anyway, I guess if it makes her rest a little easier, it's not such a huge deal that I go with an escort, even though Stonepatch has been teaching me some sweet moves." Novella flicked an ear at Mousepaw, who looked offended. "Uh, of course I'm good! I bet I could take you in a fight, any day?" Novella paused, looking amused. Mousepaw rounded on her, dropping into a play crouch. Novella rolled her eyes, but squared off against her, entirely unprepared for the way that the smaller she-cat just launched at her without any warning.
Novella's eyes went wide as Mousepaw pinned her back against the pebbly shore, leaning in and giving her cheek an over-exuberant lick. Novella wrinkled her nose, lightly batting at her friend, before the feeble hits slowed to a halt, the black and white she-cat looked up at her friend, backlit by the sun, still low on the horizon, the blue sky shining above her, face contorted in laughter, and thought: Oh.
"What?" Mousepaw asked, eyes open now, staring curiously at Novella, although the amused smile hadn't left her maw, "Why are you staring at me like that?" Novella's heart ached for all the things she wished she could say. You're beautiful. You are perfect in every single way. I am in love with you. I love you so much. But she couldn't, so instead, she softened her eyes, tilting her head to the side as she smiled back. And because she always did, Mousepaw understood.
"Oh," she mewed, quietly, gently taking a step back to let her up. Novella shook out her long coat, glancing shyly at the tabby. "How long?" She asked, and Novella wobbled her head from side to side. A while now. Mousepaw scooted closer, whispering now, like the air between them was so fragile it might shatter at the wrong exhale: "me too. Novella, I... I didn't want to say anything for fear of misinterpreting but... you're one of my dearest friends, and I care about you so much, and I'd never want to lose you over anything, certainly not reading things wrong, but I think that you're the most beautiful, sweet and strong cat that I've ever met, and when I realized I was in love with you, I-" Novella cut her off before she could finish, pressing their noses together firmly, before tilting her head to rest her forehead against Mousepaw's. The smaller molly sighed, contentment and happiness barely restrained in the sound.
Novella's tail swept across to wrap around Mousepaw's, as she nudged her head under the she-cat's chin, indicating that she should look at her. And so Mousepaw did, head tilted a little in curiosity. Novella placed one of her paws over the other's, staring into her eyes, trying to channel every single thought she had about how much she loved her into the expression. She wanted to be the one to ask. And maybe she couldn't, not vocally, but she hoped the way that she looked at her was enough, because Mousepaw always understood.
"Will... Will I be your mate?" She asked, tentative and unsure, but Novella nodded enthusiastically and all trepidation was thrown out the window as Mousepaw launched forward, knocking Novella back into the pebbles again. She couldn't bring herself to care, wrapping her paws around the other and running her forehead under her chin, purring broadly as she did so. "Of course I will," Mousepaw mewed, "of course." She was quiet for a bit, and then she sat, brows furrowing.
"But... the code." Novella's heart sank a little. She'd completely forgotten Mousepaw wasn't allowed a mate. She reached across, placed a paw on Mousepaw's own again, and gave her a look. You are worthy of love. Mousepaw's smile was fond, and then determined. "The code's a little outdated, anyways," Mousepaw mewed, "we deserve love as much as anyone else does, regardless of if I'm a medicine cat or not. I just... don't think we should tell anyone just yet. If I have to let you go, I at least want the time to enjoy being with you first." Novella's smile was so broad that her cheeks hurt. She nodded, just once, as an affirmation.
Okay, she thought to herself, but I don't think I can ever let you go

"Ack!" Badgerstar's shoulder slammed into the ground as seven kits piled onto him at the same time, pinning him there. Across the den, Stonepatch laughed, sitting shoulder to shoulder with his mate, while Maplefall lounged in the far corner of the den, conversing calmly with Acornstream and Shadowtail. Outside, the camp was quiet, but Badgerstar knew that Goldleaf was in her den, preparing for Shadowtail's kitting, which she predicted was imminent.
The kits' attention turned to the laughing Stonepatch. "Get him!" Elkkit sent up the battle cry, and the tidal wave of kits smashed into Stonepatch, knocking him over as small teeth tugged at his ears. He was chuckling under them, as Fawnrunner side-stepped, shaking her head good-naturedly. "Thanks for convincing Lionheart to let me stay behind today," He mewed, with a nod to Badgerstar, "I'd been missing these little guys, even your little rascals." He flipped himself over then, amid squeals from the kits as he bundled all seven of them between his broad paws, leaving them wriggling and yelling for escape.
"You're welcome," Badgerstar purred, holding back a laugh, "you've been working hard. The least you deserve is a little family time." He settled down a little, before nodding his head. "Juniperkit, Twilightkit, play nice. Stonepatch doesn't have to let you play with him you know." His daughters looked at him, the latter seeming extremely offended. "Why doesn't Midnightkit get told off?" She whined, and Badgerstar snorted. "Because he's being good, sweetheart." She huffed again, but was quickly absorbed in trying to wrestle herself free of Stonepatch's clutches again.
Finally, Juniperkit shot out of his embrace, followed quickly by Thunderkit, the two of them scampering around to paw at his face, distracting him so that the other kits could get loose, and charge quickly at Badgerstar, who barely had time to react before he was being flattened my multiple balls of fluff again. Carefully, he rolled onto his back, groaning dramatically and feigning death as the kits shrieked with glee.
Suddenly, the ears of Shadowtail pricked upright, and out of their peripheral, the two toms saw her sit upright, staring wide-eyed at the back of the den. Badgerstar shushed the kits, and listened. Sure enough, he hear a loud rustling, and twigs snapping, somewhere outside the den. He and Stonepatch exchanged a look, as Badgerstar gently pawed the kits away from him. "It's probably just Goldleaf looking for sticks," he assured the queens, "I'll go check."
"Right," Stonepatch nodded, before getting in a play crouch, "now a mountain lion is going to attack the brave warriors!" The kits squealed again, worry assuaged from their features as they scattered away from Stonepatch's pounce. Maplefall caught her mate at the entrance to the den, pressing her nose to his cheek. "Please be careful, Badgerstar," she whispered, so as not to alert the kits. Badgerstar touched his nose to hers. "I promise I will be," he whispered back, "but honestly, it's probably not anything to worry about." She nodded, but the look in her eyes said she didn't believe him.
Badgerstar crossed the camp, and ducked out of the entrance, into the forest outside. It was quiet out here, and he pricked his ears forward, scenting the air for any sign of something unusual. He took a step forward, circling the walls of the basin that GroveClan was inside to see if he could get closer to the nursery. He kept quiet, having taken Maplefall's concerns to heart, but there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Suddenly, he felt a flash of air behind him, and he turned sharply, scanning the shadows, but there was nothing.
There was a strange smell in the air now, and Badgerstar's stomach started to feel tighter. So maybe he'd been wrong. Maybe it wasn't Goldleaf looking for sticks after all, but whatever it was, he couldn't place it. Not a dog, wolf, bear or badger, not a twoleg and certainly not another cat. It didn't smell... like anything, really. All he knew is that it smelled wrong. Then, suddenly, a shriek cut the air, and Badgerstar felt the world fall out from under him.
"Maplefall!" He yelled, not wasting a second in taking off, weaving back through the forest and in through the camp entrance. He burst through the willow leaves in time to see pebbles scattering down the side of the basin from the back end, and Goldleaf's yellow frame halfway across camp. "What's going on?" She asked, looking concerned. Badgerstar shook his head wildly, shooting past her and into the nursery.
The first thing he saw was a shell-shocked Maplefall, sobbing openly as Shadowtail curled around her, whispering words of comfort under her breath. Then he saw Acornstream, back turned to the group as she shielded the kittens from something. But there were only four kittens. Why were there only four kittens? His stomach sank even further, and he felt numb as Goldleaf shouldered past him with a muffled curse, and his eyes followed her to see Fawnrunner crouching over her mate, trying to push him upright as he winced in pain, managing to drag himself into sitting.
"I'm okay," he was saying through gritted teeth, clearly injured. One of his ears was torn to shreds, his eye was closed, and one side of his face was dripping with blood, his front paw looked mangled and his shoulder was half torn to shreds, but he still touched his nose to Fawnrunner's, before he caught sight of Badgerstar. A melancholic, defeated look crossed his face, before he turned his head away, closing his eyes.
"What happened?" He heard himself saying, far away, like he was under water. He could have sworn he saw a now-familiar slinky back shape making her way around the nursery, looking amused, but he shook his head roughly, forcing himself across to Maplefall, to settle next to her, helping Shadowtail put pressure on her as he flanked her, grooming her forehead in a robotic manner.
"They're gone," she sobbed, shaking like a leaf. She turned her eyes toward Badgerstar, distraught and afraid, "someone took our kits."

Heavy silence had descended over the camp long ago, and even the small congregation of cats under the leader's tree felt uneasy, still able to hear Maplefall's sobbing as night had fallen on the camp. Lionheart's face was solemn, and the tension in her shoulders wasn't eased by Ashenstrike's presence at her side. Around them sat Roseclaw, Flintburr, Dustfang, Novella, Dusklight, Sedgefire and Mousepaw.
"What exactly were they upset about?" Lionheart asked, her tone stiff. Ashenstrike shifted in closer, touching his nose to her cheek, but she seemed unaffected by it. Flintburr sighed. "They were spouting something about us-- stealing Novella? I didn't really understand it at the time, and I still don't." Flintburr shook his head in frustration. Next to him, Dusklight was staring imploringly at the black and white she-cat, who was bristling angrily. "Was that your old clan?" He asked, gently. Novella nodded, tightly. "Why are they saying you were stolen?"
Novella rocketed to her feet, lashing her tail angrily as she presented her flank to the group, where the claw marks scarred her flesh. She stared at them, a hard gaze, more upset than any of the cats had ever seen her before. "They chased her away," Mousepaw translated. Novella nodded, and then shook her head roughly, nodding to Flintburr. Mousepaw stared at her in confusion, before Novella unsheathed her claws and scraped into the dirt:
HE.
"He chased you away?" Mousepaw's tone was questioning, still clearly confused, and Lionheart let out a hiss of air. "The deputy," she said, like all the pieces were falling into place. Novella nodded vehemently. "He looks like Flintburr," she explained, to the rest of the group, "but he's bigger. I caught his scent at the last gathering I went to. He's not very pleasant looking. I suppose if no one else witnessed it, he might have lied about where Novella went, or they're just looking for trouble, I don't know." She sighed, bowing her head. "I should have listened to what Flowershine was saying. I should have done something."
"This is not your fault," Ashenstrike said firmly, "No one could have guessed they'd pull something like this, Lionheart. I know it's hard to believe that we were helpless against this, but... well. The best we can do now is buckle down for the sake of Badgerstar and Maplefall, get some revenge for whoever tore up Stonepatch like that, and figure out how we're going to get those kits back, safe and unharmed." A murmur of agreement swept around the group. Sedgefire gave a firm nod. "Ashenstrike is right," she mewed, "the most important thing is the safe recovery of the kits."
"Then we start with no revenge," Flintburr said, with a sigh, "we'd be going onto enemy territory, and taking our whole clan with us would be a direct declaration of battle. I'm afraid they'd hurt the kits before we even got close." Solemn silence settled over the clan again. Novella's tail lashed angrily, and Mousepaw shifted closer to place a paw over hers, which seemed to calm her. And then Dusklight spoke.
"So we take a peace envoy," he mewed, "they don't know the clan well enough to parse whether or not we bring our best warriors, which we will do. If it comes down to it, we take them by force, but the goal is to get them as close as possible and talk negotiation, to see if we can come to a peaceful agreement. We'll work out battle strategies and plays as well, beforehand, so if chaos erupts then at least we'll have some idea of how we have to work together."
"That's a good plan," Dustfang said, face hard, "so who goes?"
"Everyone here," Dusklight said, without missing a beat. He glanced around the group, "and normally I'd suggest Stonepatch too, but he's out of commission, so we take Pinefeather instead, if Roseclaw is okay with that. Or does someone have an objection?" He glanced around the group, as Roseclaw shook his great head. "No. We are with you, if Lionheart approves." All eyes turned to the deputy, who nodded, tersely.
"I think it's a good start. It would be useful if Mousepaw could come. Badgerstar, Flintburr and I will do the talking. It will make sense from the most senior warrior and two leadership roles. Everyone else is fair protection, but we have to be sure the size of this patrol doesn't freak them out too much." Ashenstrike nodded. "We're a big clan, it would make sense. Maybe we all have affiliations with a certain area? Mousepaw knows the best herbs, I know the south best, Dustfang the east, Roseclaw the west and Boulderflame the north? Dusklight and Sedgefire know where the prey runs best, and Novella..." he glanced at the she-cat, "she's there to clear things up. But we shouldn't mention anything about the deputy attacking her."
Novella's frosty glance was easy enough for everyone to parse: then what do we say? The clan was silent for a little bit. "That you got injured, maybe, and you dragged yourself to the clan?" Mousepaw said, her voice quiet, "I don't know these cats and I don't know what they'll respond to but... trying to blame them won't work. I think you'll have to blame yourself." Novella squeezed her eyes shut, obviously frustrated, but she gave a tight nod and sat back, shoulder to shoulder with Mousepaw.
"It's settled then," Lionheart said, but there was absolutely no joy in her voice, "we set out in five days."

Slatestar dragged his paws over the leaf-strewn forest floor. He, Sandstep, and Lilypaw were out on an ‘adventure’ because Minkblossom has ordered him to ‘get off his lazy tail and do something’ after he complained about his aching joints. He was old! Could she blame him? Letting out a sigh, his olive eyes flicked up to see the gashes in Sandstep’s flank. Worry tugged at the leader. She had assured him that she was well enough to stretch her legs, much to the medicine cat’s dismay, but she had been stubborn on accompanying Slatestar on his walk. The leader sagged his shoulders, making his spine poke out slightly. His eyes were glued to his paws as the troubling thoughts that had been keeping him up and night cascaded through his skull. Vipersun was at the peak of them all. Slatestar knee the tom was planning something bad. What exactly the plan was and when he was going to carry it out was anyone’s guess, but he sensed it would be soon. And he sensed it had something to do with him. Sandstep’s brother had always been prickly, nothing like his loyal deputy, and Slatestar knew Vipersun had something against him, but lately, the warrior had seemed so on edge and easily aggravated that it caused the leader to observe him carefully. He noticed Vipersun sneaking out at night along with Lionclaw, Otterfur, and a few other warriors that he was unable to identify due to their use of flower-smelling coverups. It truly clawed at Slatestar’s nerves.

Sandstep looked over her shoulder. She furrowed her brow and flicked Lilypaw gently with her tail to signal her apprentice to wait. Slatestar didn’t notice that they had paused and bumped into Sandstep’s rear. His face grew hot and he looked wide-eyed at her. “I-I’m sorry Sandstep!” He stammered, causing Lilypaw to giggle. “That’s alright big guy. You’ve got a lot on your mind.” She said with a gentle smile, moving to his side and flicking his shoulder scoldingly with her tail “Which is why we’re out of camp. Don’t think about leader duties right now. Relax.” She drifted airily over to Lilypaw who nodded supportively. “Yea. It’s a real honor for an apprentice to spend time with the deputy and the leader.” She pointed out “Show me around! Teach me some stuff! Let’s do something so that I can brag to my brother!” Slatestar’s mouth twitched into a smile. She was just like Cindertail. “Alright.” He sighed. Sandstep’s ears perked up with an idea. “Why don’t we go up to the ravine? I haven’t been there in so long! It’s such a beautiful sight this time of day, just make sure you’re careful about where you put your paws. Lilypaw nodded eagerly, eyes sparking with excitement. Both she-cat’s eyes turned on him. He looked at both of them and smirked. “Why not?”

The group trekked up the hillside that flanked the ravine. Sandstep was in front, leading the way. Lilypaw followed obediently behind her mentor and beside her leader, chatting away like a songbird about how her training was going. It was good that she was happy. Slatestar knee Ashpaw was struggling with the loss of his father. It was to be expected, but he seemed uninterested in anything his mentor was trying to teach him. One of the other tasks the leader had was to talk to the young tom about the issues, maybe help him through some of his grief. Lilypaw, however, seemed a lot more energetic than her brother. Of course, she had to be sad who wouldn’t be, but she seemed to have accepted the fact that Cindertail was gone. If he was being honest, Slatestar somewhat envied her. He would wake up in the middle of the night panicked because of a nightmare containing his own friend. The dreams would scare him so badly that it would take several minutes for Sandstep to calm him down. “So how long have you been leader, Slatestar?” Lilypaw asked “Were there any leaders before you?” The tom shook his head. “Nope. I’m the founder of BearClan. Your mentor helped me to find cats to join us after a while, but we built the camp.” Lilypaw’s eyes brightened. “How’d you dig the caves into the side of the cliff?” She meowed with awe. Sandstep chuckled. “No, darling, the caves were already there. We did build the warriors den, though.” She explained. Lilypaw deflated, embarrassed at her stupid question. Slatestar nudged her with his shoulder. “Hey it was a valid question.” He assured her “Dont worry. When I was a Kit I used to think that clouds were sheep that grew wings and flew away. My brother made fun of me for it until the day I left.” Lilypaw giggled. “You have a brother?” She asked “What was his name? When was the last time you saw him.” Slatestar let out a heavy sigh. “Oh a long long time ago. A few moons before I came to the island. His name was Theo. He was quite a bit older than me. He was a house cat withvery nice two-legs that would feed me from time to time when I visited.” Lilypaw crinkled her nose. “You were a kitty pet?” She grumbled with disgust. “Oh StarClan no!” He chuckled “No, Theo was my half-brother. My mother and I lived in an alleyway for most of my life. One day I woke up and she was gone- I was about 30 moons old or so. I decided not to stick around so I hopped on a monster and got on a platform that two-legs use to cross water. I saw this island and figured I’d give it a shot.” He smiled down at her. He had never really told anyone his past before and it felt good to let someone know what he had done. Was this what an elder felt like? Suddenly, a picture grew in his mind. Him as an elder, telling BearClan’s newest kits about the earliest days of the Clan and how he led them against the Bear. The thought made him smile even wider.

“Here we are.” Sandstep announced. The three were perched on the edge of the cliff, looking down at the river flowing below. “Wow.” Lilypaw gasped “I never knew we had such a big river!” Sandstep nodded. “We don’t like cats coming up here. When it rains a lot, the water rises and it can get extremly strong currents. If someone slipped, it would be near impossible to get out. Plus see those rocks?” She nodded at the bottom of the chasm. Sure enough, there were heaps of jagged and smooth rocks mixed together, piled up around the bank. “If someone fell from this height, it would be fatal.” Sandstep added. Then she turned to her apprentice. “You have to promise me not to come up here alone, ok? Don’t tell your friends about it and do not encourage them to come up here. It’s extremely dangerous. It’s okay for you to be here now since you’re with us, but alone, bad things could happen.” The apprentice nodded with wide eyes and swallowed. Sandstep smiled gently. “Sorry if I scared you,” She purred, touching her nose to Lilypaw’s forehead “I just want you to be safe.” Slatestar looked out on the river. Wind swirled around them and ruffled his fur. It had been forever since he saw this sight, since he and Sandstep had first explored the territory in fact. “Brings back some good memories.” Sandstep purred to him, pressing herself against his flank. Slatestar rested his chin on her head, humming his agreement looking at the clearing around them. The tree line was far away, leaving the cats in the open grass. The gentle breeze swayed the buds of blooming pink flowers that grew in this medow. Everything seemed calm. Almost everything. Slatestar narrowed his eyes at a bush moving unnaturally under a looming oak tree. He pricked his ears and opened his jaw slightly, trying to scent any existing danger, but he was upwind from the area he was trying to investigate. Suddenly, he saw a white tipped tail flck above the leaves.

Slatestar felt panic set into his chest. The wind direction changed and he got a faceful of an putrid stench. ‘Fox’ he determined. Sandstep smelled it too. The two cats shared a knowing look and positioned themselves around Lilypaw. “Huh?” She murmured “Shat are you guys doing?” Her question was soon answered as the bushes parted to reveal a set of bared, dripping fangs belonging to a deranged looking fox. Its hackles were raised and its muscles shook with fury. It loomed over the three cats and snapped angrily at them. Slatestar tried to make himself look threatening and let out the lowest growl he could muster, but his skinnines made his efforts useless. The fox took a step forward, its muscles bulging beneath a short red pelt. The eyes were like embers, scorching into Slatestar’s skull with burning hatred. Sandstep joined Slatestar, challenging the fox. “Run” she growled through bared teeth at Lilypaw. But the She-cat was trembling with terror and wouldn’t budge. “Sandstep let’s-“ The leader started, but his deputy cut him off with a battle cry. She launched herself at the fox, clawing like a rabid raccoon. She landed on its face and spat in its eyes, attemting to blind it momentarily as she scratched at its face. The sandy she-cat pummeled the fox's ears without mercy. The creature shrieked in pain and bucked wildly, trying to dislodge the cat from its face. It worked and Sandstep went flying across the medow, sliding into a bunch of flower buds. Slatestar spat and hissed at the approaching predator. Blood trickled down the side of its face where Sandstep had torn an ear, but its eyes remained as fiery as ever. Slatestar cursed at it and flung himself over the canine, landing square on its shoulders. He stole a glance at Sandstep, who was shakily rising to her paws. ‘Guess I’ll just have to distract it long enough.’ Licking his lips, Slatestar ran a hasty plan through his head. It would have to do. He yowled angrily and plunged his teeth into where the fox’s shoulder met its neck. Blood spurred into the tom’s mouth and the metallic taste flooded his senses. He jerked his head to rip and tear at the skin, trying to fatally wound the opponent. His thorn-sharp claws dig into the fox’s back, causing it to rear back in pain. Surprisingly, Slatestar saw a flash of tortoiseshell fur dart at the fox’s exposed belly. “Very nice Lilypaw!” Sandstep cheered. She was racing over to the fight and beamed at her apprentice who was swiping at the fox’s underside. The fox twisted and jerked around, flopping on its back to try and squish Slatestar beneath its weight. The force of the impact forced Slatestar to let go of his target completely. He felt everything pulsing from the heaviness of the fox. ‘Minkblossom I told you my bones were aching! Why didn’t you listen?” He screamed mentally. His shoulder felt like it had been torn out of place and his hind leg was filled with hot needles. He couldn’t move anything. He tried to roll over onto his paws, but he flopped over lazily with his face in the dirt. He used all his might to lift his head and what he saw made his blood go cold. The fox had cornered the two she-cats in front of the steep ravine. It snapped at them and Sandstep hissed, but Lilypaw took a step back, sending a shower of tiny pebbles cascading down the side. No. No no no! He would not let them die. He locked his front legs in place and squeezed his eyes shut, using any energy remaining to get to his paws. A shriek made his eyes snap open. Sandstep was hanging onto the outcrop with her front paws. Lilypaw was no where to be seen, but from the look on Sandstep’s face she was probably hanging onto her mentor’s leg or tail for dear life. A surge of adrenaline allowed the leader to jump to his feet. He let out a battle cry and sprinted at the fox. He bowled into it from the side, head butting it to the ground a few cat-lengths away. “Slatestar!” Sandstep cried “I’m slipping!” The leader rushed over to her. Tears were spilling down her cheeks. He peaked over the edge and saw Lilypaw’s green eyes, large as moons, staring hopelessly up at him. Her claws were dug into Sandstep’s back and beneath them were a dozen piles of pointed stones, a hard river bank, and ruthless currents. There was no way out of this. He realized that and he understood that, but he would not give up. “Lilypaw first.” Sandstep gasped. He nodded and reached over to grab Lilypaw’s scruff. “Hey Lilypaw everything’s going to be okay, you understand?” She sniffed “Slatestar’s going to help you up. You can let go of me.” The young she-cat obeyed and retracted her class, leaving Sandstep’s back torn and bloody. He took a step backwards and pulled as hard as he could. He was about to get Lilypaw to safety when he felt a force knock him from behind. The fox, bleeding horribly from its neck, was pushing the cats off of the side of the ravine. Slatestar tried to steady himself and push back, but he was old and weak and the fox was young and strong. Slatestar made eye contact with Sandstep and Lilypaw. ‘I’m so sorry.’ They told. The two she-cat’s faces contorted with tears as the three cats and the fox tumbled over the cliff, falling down into the ravine, hitting the shore below.

Vipersun paced nervously around the outcrop jutting in front of Slatestar’s den. The group he took out should’ve been back by now. If something happened, he’d rip the leader’s throat out. He impatiently flicked his tail. Where were they? Unfortunately, his question was answered moments later. A group of cats cluttered around in a buzzing huddle. Vipersun rolled his eyes and approached the cats. "What is going...on." He trailed off as he saw it. His sister's twisted body resting on the ground. Her jaws were open and her fur was drenched. Beside her, Lilypaw laid in the same way, only the apprentice's neck was snapped at an awkward angle. In between the two stood Slatestar. The tom's eyes were wide, scared, and guilty. What had he done? Fury and grief ripped through Vipersun. His sister was dead. Sandstep was gone. And it was all Slatestar's fault. He let out a loud growl. "What did you do?!" He yowled, rushing to Sandstep's body, curling around it and trying to lift her head up. "Vipersun, there was a fox. I-it ambushed us. Pushed us over the ravine." Slatestar explained. Vipersun rose to his paws. He felt tears steam in his eyes, but he shook himself violently, replacing the sadness with rage. "You took them to the ravine?" He growled quietly "You know how dangerous it is. You knew something could happen!" Slatestar shook his head. "No! I-It wasn't my fault!" He protested "It was Sandstep's idea-" The warrior snapped his jaws at the frail leader. "Don't you dare blame this on her! You took an apprentice up there. You...you're the reason they're dead." Slatestar stumbled backwards. He was about to further proclaim his innocence when Rabbitspark let out a shriek. He turned to face her and his heart shattered when he saw the look on her face. The She-cat looked at her daughter in despair. She flung herself next to the young cat and started to furiously lick her daughter’s forehead. “Lilypaw!” She cried “Wake up!” Tears streamed down the calico’s cheeks as she wrapped herself around her dead kit. She looked up at Slatestar with sad, wet eyes. “What happened?” She asked weakly. Slatestar walked over to her and touched her shoulder with his tail in an effort to comfort her. “There was a Fox. It attacked us.” He whispered, eyes stinging “I couldn’t help them. I’m so sorry.” Rabbitspark burrows her face in his shoulder, weeping for the loss of her only daughter. Slatestar curled himself around her and sat with her until the burial.

~~~~
Vipersun didn’t get a single second of sleep. After they buried Sandstep and Lilypaw, life seemed to go back to normal for all of the cats. Even Rabbitspark had come to terms with it. Stupid she-cat. Didn’t she realize that Slatestar was evil? He had killed them! It didn’t matter that Minkblossom confirmed their cause of death as falling from the ravine. Slatestar could’ve killed them and covered it up. Yes! That’s what happened! He poisoned them and pushed them off. It made perfect sense, but no one would believe him. Not without proof. Vipersun’s eyes stung with exhaustion but he refused to close them even for a second. He rolled onto his back and looked up at the woven ceiling of the warriors den. Through the parted branches, he could see the moon illuminating the sky. Beside it flickered a tiny star. It pulsed, as if it were giving Vipersun a message. It rang clearly through his mind. Tomorrow. Tomorrow he would carry out his plan to put a stop to Slatestar for good.
The next morning, Vipersun’s eyes were set on fire. He had stayed up for the rest of the night plotting exactly how he would carry it out. His paws dragged across the dusty camp floor. He was physically tired, but mentally, he could challenge the bear. Thankfully, the old weak foxheart he would be killing wasn’t nearly as strong. The warrior spotted Lionclaw sulking near the nursery. Vipersun flicked an ear and made his way over to his friend. “Lionclaw.” He dipped his head. The tom nodded back, watching Vipersun sit next to him out of the corner of his eyes. “Today. It’s time this torture stopped.” He meowed, keeping his gaze focused straight ahead. Lionclaw huffed in acknowledgment. “Tell Otterfur, will you?” Lionclaw shook his head. “He hasn’t left Rosemist or the kits’ side since yesterday. He likes being a father.” The golden warrior revealed. Vipersun’s Head whipped around. “You don’t think he’d pull out now do you?” He meowed harshly. Lionclaw shook his head. “I doubt it.” He yawned, rising to his paws “Just let him have this moment. After we go through with it, I have a feeling his mate won’t be too fond with him.” Lionclaw flashed his companion a smile before walking away to join the hunting patrol he was assigned to. Vipersun furrowed his brow and got up. He walked past the crevice that was the nursery enterance. Stealing a glance, he saw Otterfur curled around Rosemist. The two new parents looked down at their sons happily with big smiles on their faces. Vipersun clenched his jaw, loathing the wave of pity that shot through him. Otterfur would be fine. After all, he would be saving the Clan from monsterous leadership. Viperstar sounded nice.
Soon, it was sunhigh. The time had come to fulfill their plot. Slatestar had called a meeting to appoint a new deputy. Vipersun, Lionclaw, Ravencloud,
Grassheart, And Deerleap all sat together. The group of cats were aware of his plans but Otterfur, who was sitting with his mate by the nursery, still remained oblivious. “As you all know, BearClan is in need of a new deputy. While we are still mourning the loss of Sandstep, and Lilypaw, (he dipped his head respectfully to Rabbitspark and Ashpaw) we must go on. The cat I’m about to chose has proven their loyalty countless times. They are a strong, respectable warrior with values and skills I highly admire. The new deputy of BearClan is-“ Slatestar wasn’t able to finish his speech. Vipersun jumped to his paws and spiked his fur up in rage. “I think we should have a new leader!” He snarled. All of the residents of BearClan turned to face him, whispering to the cats beside them. But Slatestar was unfazed. “Vipersun.” He warned gently. Vipersun shook his head violently. He stalked forward, lashing his tail, until he was standing beneath the outcrop. “Get down here you coward and settle this like a leader.” He demanded. Slatestar blinked and obeyed, slipping down the side and landing gracefully in front of the sandy tom. “You lying little piece of badger dung.” The warrior cursed “You aren’t fit to be the leader. BearClan needs someone strong and willing to defend us, not some lazy old elder who hardly has enough strenth to eat.” He spat at Slatestar, a sparkling droplet landing on his muzzle. The leader took a confident step forward. “Vipersun, I understand you’re hurting. Sandstep was your sister, it’s understandable that you are confused. But this is still no way to act. I’ve put up with your whispers and low-laying threats. I’m sick of it.” He boomed, taking another step towards the bristling Vipersun (who was standing stiffly and not backing down) “I am your leader. Whether you like it or not. Since you are a part of my clan you are to respect me. So you understand?” Vipersun smirked. “You think you’re so tough?” He sneered. Flicking his ear, he turned to face the group. “Get him.” He snarled at them.
The cats rushed forward and sprung at Slatestar. Lionclaw held his scruff while Ravencloud, Deerleap and Grassheart held down his legs. It all happened so fast taht the cats were dumbfounded as to what was happening. “What are they doing?” Adderbreeze shrieked quietly to Windfeather, who was staring in shock at the scene unfolding. Weaselfur, Cougarleap, And Batfur all looked like they were about to leap at the attackers and defend their leader, but once they saw the deranged look in Vipersun’s eyes, they decided against it. Otterfur stares open-mouthed at the group. Vipersun turned and howled at him. “Get your tail over here.” He ordered. But Otterfur didn’t move. Rosemist turned to look at her mate, the most betrayed and confused look on her face. “Otterfur I swear to StarClan don’t give up now!” The Warrior snarled. Now, all the attention was on the sleek brown tom. Otterfur looked at Vipersun with conflict tearing his eyes. Vipersun knew how to get him over. “Otterfur,” He started, voice calm “You can’t give up. You’ve already come so far. You wouldn’t want Wasppaw to have died in vain would you? You proved your loyalty by killing him. Don’t throw that all away.” Vipersun’s voice was a smooth as honey as he spewed the venomous words. Otterfur’s eyes widened in horror. Now, the whole Clan knew about his deed. Rosemist let out a strangled gasp. “Otterfur!” She pleaded “Say it’s not true!” Vipersun feigned a guilty look. “Oh was that supposed to be a secret? Oops.” He smiled slyly at Otterfur, whose expression was a mix between hatred and fear. When he didn’t defend himself, his mate growled. “How could you?!” She hissed at him, cuffing him around one of his rounded ears. He ducked at looked at his mate. “Rosemist please, you don’t understand-“ His mate snarled. “Oh I understand! You killed Wasppaw! An innocent apprentice who will never know his son because of you! You’re a wicked cat, Otterfur, I hope you rot.” Otterfur’s eyes sparked with fury. “Don’t you dare!” He snarled at her “Wasppaw was a burden to the Clan! He would’ve died the first time his stone got drawn. I did him a favor!” Rosemist blinked in disbelief. She backed away. Wolfthorn bounded up to his sister, diving between the two cats. “Leave her alone you demon!” He hissed. Otterfur snapped his jaws at the tom. “Get away! This doesn’t concern you.” He demanded. “Otterfur.” Rosemist murmured weakly, tears welling in her eyes “I can’t believe you could do this to me.” Otterfur lashes his tail. “Not everything has to do with you.” The she-cat choked out a sob. “Get away from me! I never want to see you again! And if you come near my kits, I’ll shred you to pieces!” She howled, turning and rushing into the nursery. Wolfthorn snapped one last time at Otterfur. “I knew she was too good for you. She didn’t deserve your terrible love.” Otterfur looked over him. His height gave him a frightening appearance. “She never had my love.” He sneered, eyes filled to the brim with pain “She wanted this, not me. Tell her she can keep her pathetic kits. They mean nothing to me.” Then, he whirled around, snarling and padded over to Slatestar, who was watching wide-eyes at the whole exchange.
Otterfur sank his teeth into the leader’s scruff and wrapped a paw around his neck, holding him in place. Lionclaw looked sympathetically at Otterfur. The brown tom’s eyes were filling with tears. He regretted his words, but he would never admit it. He was a gentle giant, but when he was hurt, he would trample anything and everything in his way. Good. Vipersun peeled his lips back into a devilish grin. Slatestar was being choked by Otterfur and Lionclaw while he thrashed violently against the She-cats holding him down. The sight brought joy to Vipersun. He looked around at all the horrified cats around him, paralyzed and too afraid to help their leader. “Behold your mighty leader.” He mocked, slapping Slatestar across his cheek “I’m relieving you of your duties, Slatestar. Thank you for all of the horrors you put our Clan through.” Vipersun unsheathed his claws. He raised a paw and Otterfur and Lionclaw lifted Slatestar up, giving the tom easy access to his throat. But before he could strike, someone spoke behind him. “Vipersun wait!” He turned to see who dared defy him. It was Rabbitspark. The warrior felt some of the hatred melt away. “Please don’t do this.” She whispered. “How can you say that, Rabbitspark?” He cried in astonishment “This cat has taken everything from you! First Cindertail and now Lilypaw! How can you not despise him as much as I do?” Rabbitspark shook her head. “Vipersun it’s not his fault. The bear killed Cindertail. And the fox killed Lilypaw and Sandstep. He had nothing to do with it.” She insisted “Of course I wish they were still alive and I might blame him the tiniest bit. But it is not his fault.” Tears glinted at the edges of her eyes and Vipersun’s heart ached. He wanted Sandstep back. He wanted to bawl and scream and he wanted her to wrap herself around him and tell him it was going to be ok. But she was gone. And it was all his fault. “Vipersun please-“ Slatestar gurgled. Vipersun whipped around, the fury in his eyes many times fiercer than before. “Shut up!” He yowled “Your leadership has plagued this Clan for too long. It’s time we get rid of you for good.” Slatestar’s eyes widened as Vipersun’s paw sliced through the air, ripping his throat. Blood splashed over the stone ground, spilling from Slatestar’s neck. The tom gurgled and choked, trying to breath. His body convulsed and gave a final heave before laying still in the pool of sticky blood. The liquid spread to Vipersun’s feet. The warm substance coated his paws, staining the once cream fur a sickening shade of red. Several cats howled and cried. Soon the clearing was filled with the shrill voices of his Clanmates. The sound pierced his ears. “Shut your mouths. All of you!” He growled “Slatestar is dead.” He announced “I am your leader now.”
