Lexa had finished first, as always. She loved the thrill of racing and the exhalation afterwards. She refused to acknowledge the fact that Curtis had finished second even though it was his first time doing track here.
She stretched her leg muscles, enjoying the warmth of the sun.

Kiki, Curtis' friend came up to him. She too was in track and field. She had been for years. "Curtis!" she hissed. "Have you heard the news??!!" Curtis looked at her in confusion. "It's rumored that you and Lexa share a tattoo. You've gotta talk to her, man!" Curtis chuckled in response. "Don't be stupid, there's no way she and I are soul mates." he looked at Kiki, but it was obvious that she was being serious this time. "Of Lexa and I were a match, she surely would have said something by now?" Curtis suggested. "bruh, she hates you. There's no way she wants anything to do with you." Curtis shrugged. "I guess you're right." he started walking towards Lexa.

Lexa finished stretching and took a swing of water. She leaned against a tree in the shade. She wore a thin track sweater, as always she was wearing something that covered her mark. It was no on else's business what it looked like.
All of her friends had already gotten their marks too. They didn't make a big deal out of it, and could hardly care less about finding their soulmate.
Lexa saw Curtis approaching her out of the corner if her eye but chose to ignore that.

Curtis stood there and sighed. "Is it true?" he asked, almost fear in his voice. "He showed off his arm to her. The beautiful willow was exposed. "Is it true we're a match?" he finally looked at her, trying to see if there was anything he could think to convince him that it was just a stupid rumor. A good sign was that he couldn't even see her marking. Maybe she didn't have it yet?

Lexa glanced down at his arm. No, it couldn't be... His mark perfectly mirrored hers. No, come on... Not him. Anybody but him...
Lexa refused to show any signs of recognition. Maybe if she didn't tell him, this would all go away. She knew that it wouldn't happen, but she didn't want to deal with this at all. Not today, not tomorrow, never.
"Why, you hope it'll be me?" she scoffed, pretending. "I bet you've went around to everyone saying that."
It wouldn't be the first time someone's hit on her anyways, hoping that their mark would match theirs. She had turned them all down, of course.

"In all honesty, no. I really don't want it to be you. I'll be pretty shocked if we are. You don't have to tell me right away, but remember that no matter what you dom the truth will be leaked." he frowned. "If we are a match, maybe we should see a specialist? They could tell us like, if there's anyway to reverse it or whatever.."

Lexa scoffed. A specialist? There was no way she wanted to do anything with him, ever.
"Your friends want you," she told him. They were looking at him. "Why don't you run back to them? And leave me alone," she said. She wanted nothing to do with him. Lexa pushed off of the tree and left, grabbing her things and leaving the school.

Curtis shrugged. Mustnt be her, since she wasnt so keen on telling him. Usually people were pretty open about their markings and soul mates. Oh well. He jogged back over to Kiki.

That evening, Curtis laid in bed. He sat there with this weird feeling in his gut. He couldn't stop thinking about Lexa. "Why won't she leave my thoughts?" he rolled over and laid on his arm; the one which bore the marking. When he laid, it hurt.
"Ow, what the-" he knew that if your marking was to be in pain, It meant that either 1. Your partner was in pain. 2. Something was going wrong in the relationship. Or 3. Your soul mate doesn't want you. Curtis had a feeling it was one of the latter.

After hanging out at the pier for a while, Lexa finally went home. As she entered her house, she couldn't hear any noise, which could be a good thing or a bad thing.
Hoping to get up to her room before she ran into someone, she dashed up the stairs. Unfortunately, her dad was waiting at the top. He looked as if he had been drinking, which was probably the case.
"Where have you been, Missy?" he asked her, glaring.
"I was out with my friends," she answered, glancing behind him at her room.
"Well why didn't you stay there? This house doesn't need worthless children in it. I have a hard enough time on the job area as it is. Take your things and get out. You're old enough to get your own place anyways, right?"
Lexa knew that she wasn't. But she also knew that arguing with him as not a good idea. Her dad finally moved out of the way and Lexa was able to get into her room. She closed the door and changed out of her track clothes quickly, then gathered up all of her clothes, school supplies, all of her personal belonging, which wasn't a lot anyways. She tucked it into a bag and left her room. Her dad practically kicked her out the door.
Lexa wandered around town for a while. None of her friends had safe homes either, so it would do her no good to stay there. She circled through town and ended up at a house. She didn't know who's house it was or why she ended up there. Lexa sat under a tree that partially his her from the house and set her bag down. She leaned against the tree trunk and wished that the night would be over.

Chubbs, Curtis' big Newfoundland dog, had been running around the yard. When Lexa sat down, the dog watched for a while before trotting over to her and sitting next to her calmly. He then barked, as if be was drawing the attention to alert Curtis. Curtis came outside to figure what the dog was doing, and saw Lexa. He stood there puzzled, before walking over to Lexa and Chubbs. The dog was calmed down again, laying down in a ball. "Lexa?" He said as he came into her vision. "What are you doing here?" he raised an eyebrow.
