I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION:
Philosophy
YOUR QUESTION:
We're studying the idea of free will, and two of the authors whose works we read last week were Chisholm and Holbach. When taking the quiz, there were two particularly difficult questions that are still giving me trouble even after doing outside research. I tried e-mailing my professor but she didn't respond c':
Here they are: [one] [two]
I understand the general idea of what each author believes. Chisholm believes that saying "he could have done otherwise" is not equivalent to saying "if he had chosen to do otherwise, then he would have done otherwise," because to him, there may be instances in which someone has no other choice but to act a certain way, but if they did have a choice, then they would have acted differently.
To Holbach, we are always governed by the laws of nature, and nothing we do is truly an exertion of free will, but rather just as adjusting our actions based on the motive that is strongest to us.
I would appreciate any help in understand the two aforementioned quiz questions <3
