favorite festival? noel opened his eyes to a pristine white room, alarm beeping incessantly beside him, for the 973rd time. as he pulled himself up, reaching over to hit the off button, he glanced at the date. december 24th. how had he forgot? this was the most important day of the year, and yet it had slipped away from him. he picked up the phone and keyed in a few numbers, paging a nurse. seconds later (he'd always wondered how they got there so fast), the door opened and a kalon stepped inside.
"hi noel! i'm guessing you've remembered what day it is. why don't you change out of your robe so we can get going? i'll be outside."
her name was roxy, and she'd always been noel's favorite of the staff. she was friendly and happy, but not in the way that makes you uneasy, as most of the others did. noel quickly changed into a sweater and jeans, eager to be on his way. it was a simple outfit, but that's exactly how he wanted it to look. he pushed the door open, stepping out to join roxy.
"how do i look?"
"like you just crawled out of dumpster, but that's not bad for you."
they laughed as they walked through the hall, towards a pair of doors. the keys jingled in roxy's paw as she unlocked it, revealing a world of wintery beauty. noel took a deep breath as he stepped outside. the air, for once, did not smell of bleach and medical equipment, but of earth and life. if freedom was tangible, this would be its scent.
"need a ride anywhere?"
"actually, yeah. could you take me to the 7-11?"
just one more car ride and he could leave this place behind, if only for a few days.
outside of the convenience store, a kalon was already waiting, dressed in an official-looking suit, pale hair draped over his eyes as always. eli. noel waved to roxy before running over to join him. they embraced, and he hoped his face wasn't as warm as it felt.
the taller kalon displayed a manilla folder. "i think i finally found out why they're keeping you for so long."
christmas was his favorite. for others it meant hot cocoa and gifts, but for him it was the one time he could get out of the hospital and away from the sickness that he was told infected him. the one time he could meet with eli and feel normal again.

favorite festival? {max 500 words}
Stellen loves the Spring Arts Festival his local community center holds each year. Not being much of an artist himself (though some might argue that he has some talent), the fantastic and wonderful pieces astound him. From tiny clay figures and large clocks carved from vinyl records to sewn paintings and small mosaics. One can find almost anything at the arts festival. Stellen’s favorite find would have to be a picture frame with small clay geckos forming it, each one different. Stellen's mother loved the little reptiles, and he keeps her picture in that frame.
Besides the things to buy, there are plenty of activities! Stellen loves the Cake Off. Before the festival, a handful of bakers are challenged to represent famous artworks in cake form, and the cakes are displayed and judged. But the best part is that the crowd gets to eat those cakes! It’s hard to get a slice before the cakes are gone, but seeing the unique cakes and getting a piece once in a while is exciting. The cakes aren't the only art themed foods; many food booths proudly display their own masterpieces of cooking. Stellen makes sure to try as many as his wallet will allow him. There’s always tons of make and take booths as well, and while most are targeted towards children, Stellen still finds things he can do, and can be found coloring with the kids. Then there’s the community painting. A giant piece of paper is taped to the wall of the community center and everyone is able to add their own touch to the painting. Stellen usually paints a crooked flower or cactus.
Another things Stellen loves is the play the local elementary school puts on each year. The first graders tell the history of the town and in the past few years Stellen has played the piano for them as background music. (The town’s history is rich in art, so it’s very appropriate) The same play every year can get a bit repetitive, but the children are adorable and so invested in their performance that is it hard not to smile. Being there during the rehearsals and then seeing the kids perform fills Stellen with pride, even though he barely knows the kids.
As Stellen has grown up with this festival, he has become quite a collector. He likes to think that he has his own little museum in his home, a cabinet of wonders as one of his favorite books calls such things. He loves seeking out the most unique things at the festival to add to his menagerie, including the silly little things he makes himself. His piano top is covered in things he has collected, leaving barely enough room for his lamp. Despite all this, Stellen is not a hoarder. He is very meticulous about what he chooses to display, and especially with how it’s displayed.
