"the evening sky reminds me of..." 197 words
shelley held her mother’s paw as she watched the waves crash against the sand. the tide was getting higher, and they would have to get back to tend to their cattle before nightfall, but for now, the silence was peaceful. it was enough to make her forget about the drought, and the emptiness in her pockets, and the heat of their landlord’s words from the night before. the ocean made her feel free, and it just the sight of its endless depth was enough to spark optimism for the next harvest. a moment of peace on the sand was enough to keep her going—almost.
“shelley, we need to get back to the cows. they need to get inside before—“
she sighed and squeezed her mother’s paw. “i know, ma. just a few more minutes.”
the sky was a deep, endless violet. it was almost as dark as her mother’s homemade grape jam. she smiled at the thought. it was enough to make her stomach growl as she remembered the taste of sweet jam on her tongue, and the aroma of fresh bisque coming out of the oven.
it was nice, even if it was just a moment.
